This research focuses on the development of Penn School--one of the freedpeople's schools established for ex-slaves during the mid-19th century in the U.S. South-- its educational model was considered idealistic for schools for Africans in South Africa. This study seeks the connection with history of Empires and education. During the first half of my research I looked at primary sources of Penn School and abolitionist newspapers while getting information about history of education in South Africa as well as scholarly achievements in history of Empire in association with race and gender. In the latter half of this research, based on researches done at various institutions, I hosted educational-research seminar at my institution inviting 4 scholars. In the past year, I presented a paper entitled "Implantation of American Southern Black Educational Model," and published two articles on this research topic.

In the first year, I have examined the freedpeople’s education and its role in the establishment of the modern public educational system in the U.S. South during the 19th century by looking at the case of the Penn School and Robert Smalls in Beaufort County in South Carolina. I was able to publish the monograph on the academic journal of the Institute for the Study of the 19th Century Scholarship. In the following year (last year), I further examined my research and presented at several seminars. As a result, I have published research note on the academic journal of the Association of International Studies and Regional Development. Based on last two years of research, I have realized that the study of Penn School’s connection to wider community is significant because it shows the world’s transition from Pax-Britannica to Pax-Americana as well as roles of education played within imperial context. The study of this school leads us not only to the enrichment of our understanding meaning of education for freed-population but also to the exploration in crossroads of education and politics in a larger sense.

南北戦争下における解放民教育と人種・ジェンダー編制:米国南部「再建」に関する研究

本研究は、奴隷解放期に元奴隷を対象とした教育の背景と思想を、SC州のペン解放民学校に着目して考察する。南部社会「再建」のプロジェクトとして重要な役割を担った実験的教育を通して、新南部における黒人教育史の出発点を明らかにし、その上で当該社会における人種・ジェンダー・南北地域間関係の再編過程を描くことを目的とする。具体的には次の三本柱を目標とする。第一に、ペン解放民学校史を実証的に明らかにし、第二に、戦時下・戦後の国民国家形成と市民権構想における政策者による解放民教育の位置づけと評価の検討、第三に、人種・ジェンダー・セクション間の権力関係の変容と、教育への様々なアプローチや「政治」の考察である。
20年度に目標の第二を中心に検証したので、21年度は第一の目標、ペン学校史を実証的に解明する作業を行った。21年度は詳細な学校史を確認し、学校を黒人史上や、南北戦争・再建期、南部史の文脈に位置づけた。20年度に収集したコピーやマイクロフィルムの学校や解放民局の記録や新聞など膨大な量の史資料を整理しながら読みこむ作業や、インタビューの解析作業に多くの時間を費やした。さらに私の研究内容に最も近い著書を出版した歴史家H.Williams氏の来日講演の際に意見交換し、黒人史/教育学の専門家のI.Perry氏によるアメリカ学会年次大会への来日時に、国際セミナーでコメント報告を行ったことが意義意義深かった。またL.Newman氏、H.White氏、W.Link氏、N.Shahani氏などの専門家から研究の進展に関する助言をいただいた。日本では学会や研究会活動を通して専門家と意見交換を行い、ネットワークを少しずつ構築した。3番目の目標については、当初の研究計画は3年間であったが就職のため研究員を辞退したため、今後改めて取り組んでいく。 -
奴隷解放期における人種とジェンダーの政治-米国南部ぺん学校の実験教育の背景と思想

本研究は、19世紀半ば以降の米国における奴隷解放期に元奴隷を対象として着手された教育の背景と思想を、サウスカロライナ州セントヘレナ島のペン解放民学校に着目して考察するものである。ペン学校の「実験」的教育を通して、まず新南部における黒人教育史の出発点を明らかにし、その上で当該社会における人種・ジェンダー・南北地域間関係の再編過程を描き出すことを目的としている。
19年度は、18年度に行った国際会議(豪州メルボルン大学開催)での研究報告を論文にして投稿し、成果は論文集に所収された。論文では公/私的領域論とホワイトネス研究のアプローチを採用し、解放民女性労働へのまなざしや黒人学校教師のアイデンティティの分析を行った。奴隷制廃止主義者は普遍主義思想を論拠として人種や性による社会からの解放を唱導したが、解放民の労働と教育のための援助活動という実践は、高度に人種・ジェンダー化された領域内で展開されたことが明らかとなった。
6月には日本西洋史学会において「奴隷解放期における(ネオ・)アボリショニストの黒人教育「実験」に関する試論-北軍占領下のポートロイヤル周辺地域を中心に」と題して研究発表を行い、北部出身のネオ・アボリショニストの解放民教育の意図を、労働・土地政策、啓蒙・人道主義、共和主義と「市民」化という3つの側面から検討し、教育の「実験」の歴史的背景を明らかにした。学会参加者のコメント等や史料を再検証した上で、さらにジェンダー視覚を取り入れて同テーマについて考察した投稿論文が、次年度のThe Japanese Journal of American Studiesに掲載されることとなった。
また本年度末にはフロリダとニューヨークを訪れ、専門家との会議や資料収集を行った。
