    Abstract

    The hypothesis that predictability depends on the atmospheric state in the planetary-scale low-frequency variability in boreal winter was examined. We first computed six typical weather patterns from 500-hPa geopotential height anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere using self-organising map (SOM) and k-clustering analysis. Next, using 11 models from the subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) operational and reforecast archive, we computed each model’s climatology as a function of lead time to evaluate model bias. Although the forecast bias depends on the model, it is consistently the largest when the forecast begins from the atmospheric state with a blocking-like pattern in the eastern North Pacific. Moreover, the ensemble-forecast spread based on S2S multi-model forecast data was compared with empirically estimated Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) parameters based on reanalysis data. The multi-model mean ensemble-forecast spread was correlated with the diffusion tensor norm; they are large for the cases when the atmospheric state started from a cluster with a blocking-like pattern. As the multi-model mean is expected to substantially reduce model biases and may approximate the predictability inherent in nature, we can summarise that the atmospheric state corresponding to the cluster was less predictable than others.

    Abstract

    A novel method is proposed to create very long term daily precipitation data for the extreme statistics by computing very long term daily sea level pressure (SLP) with the SLP emulator (a statistical multilevel regression model) and then converting the SLP into precipitation by combining statistical downscaling methods of the analog ensemble and singular value decomposition (SVD). After a review of the SLP emulator, we present a multilevel regression model constructed for each month that is based on a time series of 1000 principal components of SLPs on global reanalysis data. Simple integration of the SLP emulator provides 100-yr daily SLP data, which are temporally interpolated into a 6-h interval. Next, the pressure–precipitation transmitter (PPT) is developed to convert 6-hourly SLP to daily precipitation. The PPT makes its first-guess estimate from a composite of time frames with analogous SLP transition patterns in the learning period. The departure of SLPs from the analog ensemble is then corrected with an SVD relationship between SLPs and precipitation. The final product showed a fairly realistic precipitation pattern, displaying temporal and spatial continuity. The annual-maximum precipitation of the estimated 100-yr data extended the tail of probability distribution of the 8-yr learning data.

    Abstract

    This paper proposes a new method to identify atmospheric blocking development without the time filtering used in previous studies. A mode-decomposed vorticity equation is formulated from the principal components (PCs) of 500-hPa geopotential height by applying a new idea; the orthonormality of PCs allows any variable to be decomposed into a projection corresponding to the PCs. To test this, sectorial blocking episodes in Northern Hemisphere winter were identified by Barriopedro’s method. A blocking index was defined for each longitudinal range as the linear combination of the 10 largest PCs by means of the composite for the blocking episodes. Blocking development was diagnosed, in terms of the low modes of PC1–PC10 and the high modes of PC11–PC50. The results suggest that the intensification of blocking over the North Pacific and Eurasia is associated with nonlinear interaction among high modes, whereas the intensification (decay) of North Atlantic blocks is related mainly to enhanced nonlinear interaction among low-frequency (high-frequency) eddies. This main result is insensitive to the choice of definition for blocks and the choice of the mode separation boundary.

    In non-stationary time series analysis, distribution shifts between training and test datasets present a critical challenge that significantly impacts forecast accuracy. This study proposes a Quantile Exponentially Weighted Average algorithm (Quantile EWA) based on quantile regression to address biases arising from such distribution shifts adaptively. The proposed methodology integrates distinct quantile forecast models implemented via LightGBM. We demonstrate the method's efficacy through comprehensive evaluation using simulation experiments with nonlinear autoregressive models and empirical validation with real-world data.

    The number of individuals transported by emergency medical service for heatstroke has increased due to rising summer temperatures, posing a major health risk in aging societies. Accurate prediction models are essential for prevention, requiring appropriate features and flexible methods to address sudden fluctuations in the number of transports. This study utilizes diverse datasets and employs SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for model-agnostic feature selection to eliminate irrelevant information. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of SHAP-based feature selection across machine learning models and clarify its contribution to improving the accuracy of heatstroke transport predictions.

The potential applications of these high-precision machine learning models extend beyond predictions. We will discuss their use as tools for validating hypotheses in phase transition theory and identifying inaccuracies within databases.

    In this research, we studied empirical cellular automata (CA) construction method as a new modeling method for phenomena. We set the following two approaches to establish the empirical CA construction method: (A) numerical analysis on the selectivity of local rules of CA; (B) refinement of methodology for quantitative modelling. In (A), we investigated the relationship between solutions of CAs and PDEs by the use of interval operation and found the selection tendencies of resultant local rules of empirical CA mathematically. In (B), we constructed a model that mimics the solution behavior of nonlinear wave phenomena in a data driven manner. Furthermore, investigating the connection of our method with machine learning techniques and the method for analysis of global dynamics, we also obtained a novel method of modelling phenomenon.

    Meteorological low-frequency variability and prediction: A 5,000-yr integeration with an AGCM was conducted. We considered the relation between data-orbit manifold and 4-dimensional stochastic differential equation, focusing on the troposphere in boreal winter. After the breeding-growing-mode method was implemented in the AGCM, we compared multiple realisation in the long-term integration on the phase-space analysis with the initial-value growing.
    Geometrical change of extratropical cyclones: We developed a brand-new cyclone tracking programme with persistent homology. By reconstructing data with merge-trees based on maxima and saddles of the scaler field, the neighbouring among homology classes were clarified. The cyclone identification with this algorithm is consistent with conventional meteorological analysis.

    This research project studied mathematical analysis and numerical analysis for a continuum model with density gradient-dependent stress. This model is represented by a system of partial differential equations for the density function and the velocity vector field of the continuum. Since the principal terms include degenerate non-linear terms with respect to the density, it is difficult to prove the well-posedness of, for example, an initial-boundary value problem for this model in general. We focused on a characteristic steady solution specific to this model, which is so called cycloid solution, to deepen understandings of characteristic properties of a continuum behaviour described by this model. Here, by performing mathematical and numerical analysis, we obtained some well-posedness results and resolved singular profiles of the solutions.

    With close cooperation between mathematicians and meteorologist, the following research have been promoted. Firstly, we have developed a theoretical procedure to derive an empirical stochastic differential equation from climate time-series. It is applied to time-series of the tropospheric and the stratospheric winter-time low-frequency variability, which were published in an international journal. This procedure is applicable to the construction of wide range of atmospheric phenomena. Secondly, we constantly hold joint workshops between Kyoto University and RIKEN AICS on the data assimilation. They yield the development of a new non-Gaussian and non-linear data assimilation technique, which is now under close investigation as a seed research topic. Finally, we have carried out a fundamental research on the characterization of the data assimilation as chaos synchronization, which is to be a promising future perspective on the theoretical understanding of the data assimilation.
