    Abstract

    The mechanism of self-propelled particle motion has attracted much interest in mathematical and physical understanding of the locomotion of living organisms. In a top-down approach, simple time-evolution equations are suitable for qualitatively analyzing the transition between the different types of solutions and the influence of the intrinsic symmetry of systems despite failing to quantitatively reproduce the phenomena. We aim to rigorously show the existence of the rotational, oscillatory, and quasi-periodic solutions and determine their stabilities regarding a canonical equation proposed by Koyano et al. (J Chem Phys 143(1):014117, 2015) for a self-propelled particle confined by a parabolic potential. In the proof, the original equation is reduced to a lower dimensional dynamical system by applying Fenichel’s theorem on the persistence of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and the averaging method. Furthermore, the averaged system is identified with essentially a one-dimensional equation because the original equation is O(2)-symmetric.

    The exhibition of significantly large bending is a remarkable characteristic of an ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC). However, its inability to generate a high enough force is a major problem in achieving a practical IPMC actuator. The simultaneous enhancement of bending and force generation is needed for broadening the potential of the IPMC actuator as a practical engineering device. Corrosive materials as a flexible electrode of the IPMC is usually not preferred, whereas a noncorrosive material such as platinum is broadly used. Here, we used silver, a corrosive metal, as an IPMC electrode intentionally. The silver electrode exhibits a reversible redox reaction upon an external electric stimulation. That silver redox reaction resulted in the material characteristics change of the IPMC, and it consequently resulted in the simultaneous enhancement of the IPMC bending curvature and blocking force generation. It was further found that the thicker silver coating anchored into the far inside of the IPMC led to the occurrence of a significant silver redox reaction and it altered the material characteristics of the IPMC, consequently turning the IPMC into a greatly deformable and high force generative one.

    ? 2018, European Biophysical Societies' Association. According to standard membrane theory, the generation of membrane potential is attributed to transmembrane ion transport. However, there have been a number of reports of membrane behavior in conflict with the membrane theory of cellular potential. Putting aside the membrane theory, we scrutinized the generation mechanism of membrane potential from the view of the long-dismissed adsorption theory of Ling. Ling’s adsorption theory attributes the membrane potential generation to mobile ion adsorption. Although Ling’s adsorption theory conflicts with the broadly accepted membrane theory, we found that it well reproduces experimentally observed membrane potential behavior. Our theoretical analysis finds that the potential formula based on the GHK eq., which is a fundamental concept of membrane theory, coincides with the potential formula based on Ling’s adsorption theory. Reinterpreting the permeability coefficient in the GHK eq. as the association constant between the mobile ion and adsorption site, the GHK eq. turns into the potential formula from Ling’s adsorption theory. We conclude that the membrane potential is generated by ion adsorption as Ling’s adsorption theory states and that the membrane theory of cellular potential should be amended even if not discarded.

    IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composite) actuators have numerous promising applications in designing electroactive soft motion structures. It was reported that the bending behavior of Selemion CMV-based IPMC in response to the electrical stimulation was quite susceptible to the environmental absolute humidity, and the environmental absolute humidity increase appeared to cause the unstable bending of Selemion CMV-based IPMC. Previously a circuit model for the analysis of Selemion CMV-based IPMC bending behavior was proposed and it actually resulted in quite successful prediction of bending behavior. However, it does not provide us with any information of bending stability. In this study, using Simulink - Matlab, an open loop model was built, based on the circuit model, the stability analysis of Selemion CMV-based IPMC bending was carried out.

    ? 2014, (publisher). All rights reserved. Unidirectional motion along an annular water channel can be observed in an experiment even with only one camphor disk or boat. Moreover, the collective motion of camphor disks or boats in the water channel exhibits a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous state, depending on the number of disks or boats, which looks like a kind of bifurcation phenomena. In a theoretical research, the unidirectional motion is represented by a traveling wave solution in a model. Hence it suffices to investigate a linearized eigenvalue problem in order to prove the destabilization of a traveling wave solution. However, the eigenvalue problem is too difficult to analyze even if the number of camphor disks or boats is 2. Hence we need to make a reduction on the model. In the present paper, we apply the center manifold theory and reduce the model to an ordinary differential system.

    研究課題1では、パルス解の集団運動に関する中心多様体収縮理論の確立とその応用が目標である。解析においては、縮約方程式が有益である一方で、多粒子系固有の難しさがある。このような場合、粒子数を無限大に取り平均場近似を適用することで問題を解決できる。このアプローチを確立するために、2023年度には、交通渋滞を再現する多粒子系モデルとしてよく知られるOVモデルを例に挙げ、渋滞相の数理的特徴を解明した。先行研究で既に平均場方程式が導かれているため、1次元領域において周期境界条件を考慮し、この方程式における周期進行波解の存在を証明した。OVモデルに含まれるシグモイド関数がOV関数としてよく用いられるが、その非線形性から、双安定系の反応拡散方程式と同等の数理構造を持つことが明らかになった。これにより、ヘテロクリニックサイクルの存在を証明し、目標とする周期進行波解の構築に成功した。現在、この研究結果を研究論文としてまとめている。
    研究課題2に関しては、パルスの位置を表す関数が満たす時間遅れ項付き微分方程式における時間周期解の存在を保証することが最初の目標である。これまでの解析から、特異摂動解として特徴づけられるノコギリ型の時間周期解が現れることがわかっていた。しかし、この解が満たすべき方程式には時間遅れ項が含まれるため、解析が難しい。そのため、時間遅れ項を自励系の非線形項として再解釈する新たな方法を採用することにした。これにより、方程式を通常の力学系として捉えることが可能になり、解析が容易になるだろう。現在、この新たなアプローチを用いて時間周期解を構築するための解析を行っている。

    Self-propelled particles is the object what spontaneously moves using chemical energy. A camphor disk is one of the self-propelled particle that slides on water. We previously observed mode bifurcation of camphor motion with change in the number of disks. However, its mechanism is under investigation. In this project, we approached this problem from both experimentally and mathematically. For simplify the system, the number of disk was fixed, and the area of water surface was sequentially varied. As the results, similar mode bifurcation was observed, i.e., continuous motion in large area, oscillatory motion in middle area, and stationary state in small area. This mode bifurcation for a single disk was successfully reproduced using mathematical model that was obtained with modified the typical model for camphor motion. Our mathematical approach indicated that oscillatory motion is appeared by instability of continuous motion.

    We showed the analytic extension of the solution of a reaction-diffusion equation into complex domain. However, in general, the complex singularities appear. To study the motion of the singularities, we consider the heat equation and the Allen-Cahn-Nagumo equation. For the Allen-Cahn-Nagumo equation, we study the motion of the complex singularities of the exact solutions. We tried to extend the properties derived from this observation into the case for general nonlinearity.
    Moreover, we study the bifurcation from infinity and we get the result which generalizes the results of Stuart and Rabinowitz into the multi-component reaction-diffusion systems.

    We obtained two kinds of results in a mathematical model for the collective motion of camphor boats. First, we demonstrated that the numerical results obtained in our models for camphor boats are quite similar to those in a car-following model, the OV model, but there are some different features between our reduced model and a typical OV model. Those results are summarized in a manuscript published in a scientific journal. Secondly, we developed a center manifold theory to reduce the mathematical model of a PDF form for camphor boats into an ordinary differential system.
    We also studied a reaction-diffusion system with three components to generate congestion phenomena of pulses. Since the reaction-diffusion system is one of excitable systems, it naturally has a solution with a pulse shape. We conclude that a bifurcation of a standing pulse can generate a traveling pulse and congestion of pulses.

    The following mathematical models 1)-3) were represented based on data analyzed environmental parameters and benthic community samples in Antarctic lakes.
    1) "Modeling photo-chemical reaction": Photosynthetic reaction center of photo-trophs was represented as three-state model, and optimum strategy of light utility was evaluated responding to light wavelength, then the respondence mechanism of photo-trophs was explained theoretically. 2) "Modeling developing process of vertical community structure": Productivity of photo-trophs was evaluated under vertical-space structure, and the formation process of vertical community structure was modeled. 3) "Modeling formation process of vertical pigment pattern": The formation process of vertical pigment pattern which the actual photo-trophs possesses was modeled by responding to incident light spectra to the actual lakebeds.

    We studied a traveling wave solution with pulse shape in general reaction-diffusion systems with excitability. We first derived a linear eigenvalue problem with respect to the traveling wave solution and proved that the solution becomes unstable dependently on a diffusion coefficient. Next we proposed a simplified model for combustion to study a spatio-temporal pattern, called "fingering pattern". This model generates an interface. Also, we can measure parameter values in our model experimentally.
