In the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), linguistic knowledge is explored through describing the correspondences between different types of information (e. g, syntax, semantics, arguments, phonology, discourse, etc.). This type of exploration so far has been successful in terms of the correspondence between an external expression structure and an internal structure, focusing on the intra-sentential representation of grammatical knowledge of one sentence. The theoretical accounts resulting from this exploration can be applied to the research into the inter-sentential representation of grammatical knowledge in discourse. This study is one of the preliminary attempts to explore the possibility of this application. On the basis of the theory of Information structure by King (1995,1997), Choi (1997,2001), etc., some examples of topicalization in Japanese language are formally described in terms of functional structure. Chapter 2 summarizes the parallelism among different types of linguistic knowledge upon which LFG is based. Chapter 3 accounts for Information structure in general. Chapter 4 analyzes some topicalized sentences in Japanese from the perspective of structural correspondence. In the last chapter, it is argued that this study has some pedagogical implications on English education.

In 2017, significant suggestions have been made based on objective data with respect to the procedure to categorize the possibilities between English and Japanese according to a set of principles.
In 2018, some instances have been observed in which certain dependency types are more frequent than others (1) in the texts produced by learners of English from certain countries or regions, or (2) in all the texts produced by learners of English regardless of their countries or regions.
In 2019, research has enabled us to describe the syntactic divergence among plural sentences in transparent manners and to deepen our understanding for statistical analyses of corpus data.

In 2014, I have obtained the parse output (dependency trees) of the Japanese sentences and their English translations in a English-Japanese parallel corpus, and compared the graph centrality of these dependency trees. It has been shown as numerical data that English sentences tend to contain more embedded syntactic structure than their Japanese translations.
In 2015, I have applied the notion of structural divergence between the dependency trees of English sentences and those of their Japanese counterparts. I focused on the Japanese noun phrases with the case particle "-ga" which have been found in the same English-Japanese parallel corpus, and on how they are translated in their English counterparts. The divergence pattern have been categorized according to the notion of structural divergence.
In 2016, the frequent dependency types are found to be different between English texts written by Japanese learners of English and those written by native speakers of English.

The model of Global Literacy Education includes Communication Management, Learning Strategies, Team Work, Critical Thinking, Synthesis Skills, Analytic Skills, Problem Solving, Project Management and Diversity Management. Global Literacy education is realized in the package of three-staged courses: English Tutorials, Critical Reading and Academic Writing (critical thinking, analytic skills, synthesis skills and problem solving skills), Discussion English Tutorials (communication management, learning strategies and problem solving sills) and Cross-Cultural Distance Learning course (project management skills, problem solving skills. project management skills and diversity management skills). All of these courses are based on Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Course Contents are digitalized and provided with automatic assessment of learning outcomes, along with interactive widgets and learner logs to assist instructors to give personalized feedbacks.

English should be taught as a lingua franca in Asia. This means that shifting the traditional model from that of a native speaker to a bilingual model. Instead of deriving linguistic benchmarks from a native speaker, communication styles and pragmatic norms can be derived from successful bilinguals in Asia. ICT-based education styles enable us to achieve this goal. In order to obtain experimental evidence, we proposed the reliable and valid measurement scales for motivation and social skills as well as automatic assessment of oral production in English.

The purpose of this research is to develop digitized teaching materials for oral production among junior high school, high school and university students. In order to do this, we have collected not only oral production data, but also diary data, essay data, e-mail data, computer mediated communication data and digitized all the data with part-of-speech annotation. We have called these corpora, 'Waseda Learner Corpora of English.' We also analyzed the textbook the learners learned, in order to see the relationships between input and output. Some of our experimental works also focussed on 'chunks' which are supposed to be internalized in the interlanguage system each learner is assumed to possess.
On the basis of our corpora analysis, we have found that Japanese learners have a very limited range of sentence patterns and chunks, particularly in the area of speech functions such as thanking, apologizing, refusing, offering and requesting. For this reason, digitized teaching materials provide the remedial materials to instruct the weaknesses of our learners of English. The teaching materials are uploaded on http : // 163.47.27.25/. This is going to be supplemented with more extensive and richer materials this year. Most of the digitized materials adopt Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and cover grammar drills, usage explanations, intonation exercises and pragmatic drills.
