• Visual Perception of Moisture Is a Pathogen Detection Mechanism of the Behavioral Immune System. Reviewed International journal

    Language:English

The behavioral immune system (BIS) includes perceptual mechanisms for detecting cues of contamination. Former studies have indicated that moisture has a disgusting property. Therefore, moisture could be a target for detecting contamination cues by the BIS. We conducted two experiments to examine the psychophysical basis of moisture perception and clarify the relationship between the perception of moisture and the BIS. We assumed that the number of high luminance areas in a visual image provided optical information that would enable the visual perception of moisture. In two experiments, we presented eight images of dough that contained different amounts of moisture as experimental stimuli. The amount of moisture shown in the images was increased in eight steps, from 28.6 to 42.9% of the total weight of the dough. In Experiment 1, the images were randomly presented on a computer display, and the participants (n = 22) were asked to rank the images in the order of the visually perceived moisture content. In Experiment 2, the participants (n = 15) completed pairwise comparisons based on the perceived moistness of the images. Furthermore, to examine the BIS responses, the participants rated the strength of disgust evoked by the stimuli, their motivation to avoid touching the stimuli, and the estimated magnitude of the risk of contamination by physical contact with the stimuli. The results indicated that the moisture content and the numbers of high luminance areas in the images accurately predicted the perception of moisture, suggesting that the detection of visual moisture was highly accurate, and the optical information served as an essential perceptual cue for detecting moisture. On the other hand, the BIS responses peaked in response to stimuli having approximately 33 to 39% moisture content. These results show that objects containing a moderate amount of moisture could be the target of visually detecting pathogens by the BIS.

  • Photographic Interface to Communicate the Impression of Size Using Reference Object Reviewed

    61 ( 1 ) 79 - 87 2020.1

     More details

    Language:Japanese

We often find differences between the size impressions received when viewing an image of an object, and those received when actually viewing the object. The purpose of this research is to create media that not only conveys the size as information but also conveys the impression of the size estimated when viewing the target object. In this paper, three types of reference objects were compared in terms of the effectiveness of the reference object in giving clues to help understand the size of objects. Each of these reference objects and the target object were placed side by side and photographed to prepare the images used in the experiment. After the subject looked at the image while holding the reference object in the hands, an object was presented to the subject, and the subject reported whether it looked bigger, smaller, or the same size compared to the object shown in the image. By using three types of reference objects―one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional reference objects―we investigated whether the size impression changed depending on the type of reference object used. From the results of the experiments with limited conditions, very little influence of the type of reference object on the size judgments was seen. The subjects' strength of confidence about their size judgements also did not change significantly depending on the type of reference object.

It is said that spoilers on the SNS services such as the results of sports matches spoil viewer's enjoyment when watching recorded matches. In this paper, we verified whether spoilers are a problem. It was revealed that spoilers are a problem in terms of lack of tension for viewers. Therefore, we investigated the characteristics of spoilers. We clarified the relationship between the conditions of sports matches and spoilers. In addition, we compared three methods for detecting spoilers and show the usefulness of a method that uses SVM with Condition of Matches.

Almost Japanese are interested in handwriting beautiful characters. Here, what is beautiful handwritten character? In this paper, we proposed a method to generate average handwritten characters by using Fourier series expansion. Then, an experimental test showed that user's average characters are more beautiful than user's handwritten characters. Another test showed that average characters of users are more beautiful than each user's average characters and that almost all users evaluate own average characters highly.

The image systems have been developing toward the purpose of representing 'clear' images. The regular lattice pixel placement in the conentional image systems intrinsically have the problem of jaggies on diagonal line that may result in severely decrease the image clarity. The authors have been proposing and discussing the image systems with the psudoramdomly placed pixel for eliminating the jaggies in images. The clarity of the represented images by the psudorandom pixel placement deeply depends on the pixel configuration parameters, and the optimization of these parameters are not clarified. In this paper, it is described that the subjective experiments for optimizing three pixel configuration parameters; the size of luminescent area, the area displacement within the pixel, and the light diffusion from the area.

Onomatopoeia refers to words that represent the sound, appearance, or voice of things, which makes it possible to create expressions that bring a scene to life in a subtle fashion. In this paper, we propose an onomatopoeia thesaurus map to enable the construction of a map that visually confirms "similarity relationships between a number of onomatopoetic words" and "similarity relationships between unknown onomatopoetic words and existing onomatopoetic words," which are difficult to grasp from a conventional thesaurus. It is also possible to label objects with onomatopoetic words and visualize the similarity relationships between the objects on a map. In this paper, we introduce an example of labeling onomatopoetic words relating to the textures of sweets (desserts).

Interactive and autonomous agents are considered to participate in our daily life in the future; in this situation, we expect that the agents have ability to communicate with people naturally. For natural communication, the agents should speculate about humans' intentions. For speculating intentions like deception, in this study, we focused on unconscious expressions when people tell a lie. Then, we experimentally investigated whether "lies" in a situation similar to actual communication were discernible by using nonverbal information such as gaze, prosody and facial expressions. We found that a discriminant analysis achieved 75-85% success rates in discriminating the participants' lies using 4 of 13 variables. The selected variables contain all the modalities to which we paid attention. The selected variables changed with situations and individuals. The discriminant function discriminated about 80% of an unknown data set of lies that was acquired for same people under a similar condition. For discrimination of lies by agents, it is neccessary to automate the measuring. For this purpose, we made an automatic measuring system of gaze directions and facial feature points. Then, we conducted an experiment by using the system. Therefore, we could get a clue that agents had a potential to speculate about human's intentions.

Our project aims to develop robot authoring system especially for non-robotic researchers, such as cognitive psychologists, social psychologists, designers and art performers, to provide an intuitive robot operating environment, which enable them do authoring the robot as they want. Concretely, we have been developing the robot system which has the following characteristics. 1) Changing the robot's appearances and functions by attaching or removing Sub Modules, e.g., arms, tails, ears, wings, on/from Core Module. When this Sub Module was attached on Core Module (robot's base body), the particular information embed in Sub Modules is sent to the robot controller and this controller change the robot's behaviors according to the received information. 2) Authoring (editing or turning-up) the robot's behaviors with using intuitive command system not like a traditional program language (e.g., move (10.0, 0.0)), but similar to our natural language (e.g., "move," "run").

Most previous studies about a mechanism of human language/meaning acquisition and its computational model did not take into account the instructor's adaptation to the learner. In this paper, we propose a mutual adaptive speech meaning acquisition model which can induce and utilize the instructor's adaptation, based on the observational results of meaning acquisition process through the actual interactions between human instructors and human learners. Specifically, this model is designed to achieve the following two competences: one is the competence to achieve a gradual learning which starts rather simple and easy learning task and then shift to more complex one; the other is to induce the instructor's adaptive behaviors by means of showing its learning level as the velocity of paddle motion, e.g., when the learning is going well, the paddle shows the fast action; otherwise, the paddle does the slow one. As a result of testing experiment to observe the interaction between participants and this model, although this model can not learn the meanings of participants' instructions because of the low accuracy of implemented sound recognizing system, this model can induce the participants' adaptive behaviors that the participants tried fitting their teaching strategies for this learning model.

The purpose of this study is to propose a speech meaning acquisition model, which can be applied for an adaptive interface system, from a perspective of human-human communication establishment process. The model was designed to discriminate the types of instructions based on salient prosodic features and to recognize the given instructions using a positive reward (given for its successful action) and a negative reward (from the utterance of a instructor which draws listener's attention). As a result of a test, this model could eventually learn to recognize the given instruction from an actual human instructor. It is expected that the constructed meaning acquisition model can be applied for an adaptive interface system, which provides a natural interaction environment for its user.

The effects of the speaker's adjustment of the teaching strategy and the use of paralanguage information of speech to acquire its meaning were clarified by means of experiment: In the experiments, two subjects played a game of Pong: one of the subjects (operator) could not understand linguistically what the other one (teacher) was saying. The results of these experiments revealed the following. First, the teacher's high-pitched voice drew attention of the operator's current action. Second, the process of meaning acquisition can be regarded as reinforcement learning based on a multi-reward system (i.e., a positive reward for correct actions and a negative reward for incorrect actions, given in the form of the teacher's high-pitched voice). Finally, mutual adaptation between the subjects was observed, that is, the subjects learned to respond appropriately to each other's behavior. It is concluded that the above three phenomena are important to the process of meaning acquisition and can be viewed as the basic requirements to enable the acquisition of meaning of unknown speech, and to construct an adaptive sound interface, which can provide a natural interaction enviromnet for its user.

The purpose of the paper is to reveal the role of Japanese onomatopoeia in verbal communication in socio-linguistic way. To accomplish this purpose, we have conducted a web-based nationwide scale research about the frequencies of onomatopoeia use in each area, the intended listeners and events to deliver. As the results, they do not have any difference between the subjective frequencies of onomatopoeia use among areas, but there is still a strong belief about the area bias, probably given from mass-media. Moreover, onomatopoeia tend to be used to familiar people than socially elder people, and it is good at explaining events with visual and tactile features.

Onomatopoeias refer to words that represent the sound, appearance, or voice of things, which makes it possible to create expressions that bring a scene to life in a subtle fashion. Using onomatopoeias therefore makes process of robot motion generation more easily and intuitively. In previous research, subjective quantified values of onomatopoeias have been used as indices of robot motion, but generality of the motion was not evaluated. In this paper, we propose a method for generating robot motion using objective quantified values of onomatopoeias. We verified that proposed method generated more suitable motion than the previous method by experiment.

Onomatopoeias are usually used in the case that one cannot describe certain phenomena or events literally, and it is said that user' intuitive intentions are embedded in the onomatopoeias. Therefore, an interface system which can utilize the onomatopoeias as input information could comprehend such users' intuitive intentions and would contribute in reducing users' cognitive loads during their interaction with the interface systems. The purpose of this study is then to objectively generalize the onomatopoeic expressions by assigning certain numerical values in each attributes to these expressions to support users' intuitive expressions especially for applying for the interface system.

We investigated the effect of this adaptation gap on the users' behaviors toward a robotic agent. The results show that the positive or negative signs of this adaptation gap significantly affect the users' behaviors towards the agents.

Onomatopoeia refers to words that represent the sound, appearance, orvoice of things, which makes it possible to create expressions thatbring a scene to life in a subtle fashion. In this study, we proposean onomatopoeia thesaurus map to enable the construction of a map thatvisually confirms ``similarity relationships between a number ofonomatopoetic words'' and ``similarity relationships between unknownonomatopoetic words and existing onomatopoetic words'', which aredifficult to grasp from a conventional thesaurus. It is also possibleto label objects with onomatopoetic words and visualize the similarityrelationships between the objects on a map. In this paper, weintroduce an example of labeling onomatopoetic words relating to thetextures of sweets (desserts).

We proposed "Adaptation Gap" that indicates the differences between the users' expected functions of the artificial agents before starting their interaction and their felt functions after the interaction, and we have been investigating the effects of this adaptation gap on the users' various aspects, such as subjective impressions, behavioral strategy or biological signals. In this paper, we introduced our recent investigation about the effects of adaptation gap especially on the users' subjective impressions about the artificial agents.

We developed an interface system called "Marching Bear," where the robot controller's motions were reflected in the motions of certain characters appearing on a computer display. We then conducted a simple experiment to investigate the effectiveness of this interface system to see whether users felt that this interface system was enjoyable. We used a questionnaire and conducted an observation to determine whether users could direct the robot's arms in such a way as making the character walk. The results were that most participants felt this system was enjoyable and that they could direct the robot's arms in the way as making the character walk. The "Marching Bear" had a significantly stronger effect on the participants' emotional aspects

In this article, we attempted to test whether the shape could be perceived using an environment perception device with movements similar to sensory organs. In the experiment, the active sensing device known as CyARM was adopted. CyARM measures and transmits the distance between a user and an object to the user's haptic sense. Results of the experiment clarified that sharp-edged shapes are able to be specified, but round-edged shapes are more difficult to specify. Object shapes are classified by sharpness of the shape and by the ratio of height and width. This result is suggest similarity between perceived and actual shapes.

White cane is the most common tool that assists visually impaired persons in walking. It is simple, light and available anywhere even without walking support facilities such as textured paving block. However, it has not enough range of obstacle detection and certain obstacles may not be detected. Our study aims at developing a handheld or wearable device which has wider detection range and can detect obstacles which white cane can′t in order to compliments white cane. This device utilizes ultrasonic sensors to search wide range and vibration motors to present obstacle information with patterns of vibrotactile stimulation.

CyARM was developed by Okamoto and other project members. It is a sensory substitution device for blind persons to recognize space and distance. The user can recognize a distance by wire's length (bending and stretching of arm) that controlled by motor according to the measured distance. It's necessary to clarify the characteristic of distance perception by CyARM for correct distance perception. The purpose of this research is to clarify the characteristic of distance perception by using CyARM and to improve wire control based on the results of experiment.

This paper describes experimental investigation for relation between information expressed from an agent and appearance of an agent in attitude informing. Is is very important issue to inform a user of agent's attitude in Human Agent Interaction. Though appearance of an agent, information from an agent influence the attitude informing, it has not been clarified the relation between of them. We propose the assumption that very simple information like beep sound enables a robot having mechanical appearance to inform its primitive attitudes to a user. We designed such a robot using Mindstorm, and conducted experiments with participants for verifying our assumption. Eventually the experimental results supported our assumption, and we believe these results contribute to design of a robot having effective interaction with human users.

In this paper, at first, we introduced our recent study to construct a speech interface agent which can communicate smoothly with everyday users and can be a communication partner for them. To evaluate the interaction between the users and this agent model, e.g., whether the user regards this agent as a communication partner or not, we need to refer the objective indicator which reflects users' internal status accurately and reliably. However, there were no previous studies to propose such objective indicator so far. We then proposed and explained the experimental setting to acquire the objective indicator with exploiting the users' cognitive, behavioral and physiological indexes.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how human recognize the interacting robot, and how does it change in the course of interaction. To that end, we focused on "Joint Attention" and "Gaze Following" to recognize the human recognition, and we conducted experiments controlling the pattern of interaction. The results of two experiments suggests that the rate of gaze following to the robot doesn't depend on the pattern of robot action and the length of interaction, but depend on ISI(Inter-Stimulus Interval)which is the time from task to task.

In our daily life, we could observe the intimate relationship between interactants who do not share the same language. In this paper, we assume that both mutual adaptation, in which interactants learn to respond appropriately to one another's behavior, and the prosodic information in a speech play a significant role in establishing this kind of communication. To study these effects, we prepared a game experiment. The result showed that the successful pairs showed mutual adaptation, and that pitch information as a prosodic information in speeches had a consistent role of drawing a partner's attention. Therefore, this study identified that these effects had an important role in establishing smooth speech/action interaction, even in a restricted communication.

In order to realize an image interface that can appropriately convey the "impression of size" of an object, we have implemented and tested three types of methods: (1) Method combining planar images to reproduce a three-dimensional shape and giving a clue of depth, (2) Method to give a clue to understand size by imprinting reference object with fixed size into image, (3) Method to display objects larger than the display screen by controlling display image in conjunction with the movement of display device.
In addition, we have developed and used an evaluation method as to whether “the impression of size” can be conveyed. In the method, (1) the image is presented at various magnifications, (2) the viewer remembers the impression of the size of the object, (3) the real object is presented in front of the viewer, (4) the viewer answers whether he/she feels the real object larger or smaller compared to the object he/she remembers.

Onomatopoeic expression, which can support to describe body motion, promotes intuitive knowledge sharing regarding the body motion. Meanwhile, onomatopoeias are slightly different meanings in each person, which sometimes makes a person mislead his/her body motions. Our study employed writing motion as an example of body motion. We proposed and constructed multi-dimensional fuzzy sets based on writing-skill features expressed by onomatopoeias. The study calculated the similarity between the fuzzy sets and evaluated the utility and the feasibility of the proposed method using multi-dimensional fuzzy sets. Moreover, we constructed a re-arranging system of Japanese calligraphic fonts which are applications based on correspondence between onomatopoeias and writing features.

In this study, we focused on the "active area" in pixel, which actually compose the image, such as photo receptor in camera or photo emitter in display. By random arrangement of four types of pixels with different active area displacement in the pixel, we obtain pseudorandom pixel placement, which has the advantage of clearness in camera or display, or the equal clearness with decreased number of pixels. These results realize the more clear camera or display with the same number of pixels, or to keep the clarity with decreased number of pixels.

We have developed CyARM, an equipment to recognize spatial impression, into a new one (F.B.Finger) which conveyed a distance information or light level to a finger. After the evaluation of the experiment with this equipment, it turned out that this had a better capacity in the distance recognition than commercially available device to support walking. We published this result at the international conference (ambient2012) and received the Best Presentation prize. Moreover, we held the darkness exhibition with this equipment, and many visually impaired participated in it. Our exhibition had been reported in a number of newspaper articles.
