    本研究の目的は、「英語ライティングにおける高大連携の指導体制」を構築することである。高等学校から大学に繋がる英語ライティング指導を双方の教員が協働で考え、実践する。具体的には、1) 高校から大学へ継続的な指導ができる「英語ライティング指導書」を作成し、その指導案に基づいた授業実践を行う。2) 指導においては、「論理的思考力」を醸成するための指導に焦点を置き、「書く」という行為を通じて生徒や学生が自ら思考し、論理的に表現できる力を養う。3) 1)の指導書をもとに「高大の英語教員を対象としたライティング指導研修」を行う。現場やWeb上のコミュニティーで情報を発信し、多くの教員が効果的なライティング力を伸ばす指導を共に考え、実践する。
    2021年度は、2020年度に続き、4つの高等学校で授業実践を行った。具体的には、1) 東京都立南多摩中等教育学校では、物事を客観的に説明するパラグラフ指導方法と教材を高大の教員が協働で構築し、担当教諭が実践に移した。2) 愛知県立明和高等学校では、女性の社会進出をテーマに問題解決型エッセイの指導を行った。ルーブリックを作成し、生徒が指導前後で書いたエッセイを高校教員と本研究メンバーの2名が評価し、指導の効果を検証した。3)兵庫県立三田祥雲館高等学校では、SDGsをテーマに、問題解決型エッセイの指導を行い、数回に渡って本研究メンバー3名が生徒の書いたエッセイにフィードバックを行った。(本実践に関しては、後述する大学英語教育学会JAAL in JACETにて報告した。)。4) 大阪府立高校扇町総合教育高等学校(2022年度から桜和高等学校)では、単元ごとのサマリライティングを行い、一年を通して生徒の書いたパラグラフの変化を見た。年度末には、自分の言葉でパラフレイジングを試みる生徒も見られたが、語彙の間違いなどがあり、今後の指導のための課題となった。

    In this project, the researchers attempted to establish an effective EAP program which would help students transit from high school English to academic English. First, they conducted surveys constructed in the framework of revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001) at 11 universities. The survey data revealed that experiences of high school graduates were dominantly at low levels of cognitive demand. The results were reflected to the design of the EAP programs, which were planned and implemented with the students majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), medicines, and international studies. According to the analyses of students’ written products and the post-surveys, the programs seemed to be effective in providing students with scaffoldings of different cognitive demands, and thus preparing students to read and write critically and logically in academic contexts.

    This study investigated how the reading literacy defined in the PISA criteria is fostered in secondary English language education in Japan. Analyses of the MEXT-approved high school textbooks (Communication English I and II) revealed that a large percentage of reading questions and tasks required understanding at the lowest cognitive level in Bloom’s revised taxonomy (Anderson and Krathwohl, 2001) and only a few tasks required higher levels such as integrating and evaluating. On the other hand, the textbooks used abroad were equipped with longer passages and with activities that gradually increased in difficulty of cognitive demand. The observations of CLIL, CBI, and IB overseas classes indicated that the textbooks served as a resource for learning and encouraged students to engage in intellectually stimulating tasks. The research outcomes suggest that textbooks in Japan include longer, more thought-provoking passages; also,it would be prudent to incorporate step-by-step scaffolding.

    In 2006, the six-year curriculum for becoming a licensed pharmacist in Japan was introduced. Among other things, it highlighted the need for pharmacy English and there was a great demand for new teaching materials, so we tried to develop a textbook for ‘Practical Pharmaceutical English.’ First, a survey of pharmacy schools nationwide was conducted to find out their needs for teaching materials. Then we visited UCSF, a leading university of clinical pharmacy, and collected authentic materials including the interviews of two hospital pharmacists who are also educators and researchers. In January 2015, Practical Pharmaceutical English was published in cooperation with English teachers, pharmaceutical sciences faculty, and a hospital pharmacist. In the end, we were able to not only produce a text that will help student pharmacists in Japan to improve their English skills, but we were also able to learn a lot and grow as teacher-researchers in schools of pharmacy.

    We investigated some model cases of CBI and CLIL in and outside (e.g., USA, Australia, Europe, and Taiwan)of Japan. We also analyzed teacher-oriented cognitive questions and activities in Japanese junior high school English textbooks. We focused particularly on Cummins' concept of CALP and socio-cultural elements, with the aim of identifying what could be relevant to the Japanese English language education system. Our findings enhance the current state of knowledge of the effectiveness of content material in English textbooks within different Japanese school settings. Finally, we discuss suggestions for improving curricula, teaching plans and materials.

    This research investigated into those aspects of overseas English education systems that could be relevant to the Japanese English language education program. To foster higher-level English language development, students should be provided with challenging student-oriented lessons that require cognitively demanding communication skills based on Cummins' concept of CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency). This would, in turn, help them to improve their critical and analytical abilities. Also, academic content should be carefully calibrated and integrated with language instruction in English language education. Some of these views are consistent with content-based instruction and immersion programs.

    本研究課題のもとで、日本におけるバイリンガル教育に関して、多面的に調査し研究に取り組んだ。大きく変わりつつある英語教育を中心に、多様な形で展開している二言語教育、異文化理解教育への取り組みについて、国内外にわたり広く実態調査した。そこから、カリキュラム編成や授業の組み立てなどの面で具体的な資料と指針がえられた。それと同時に、さまざまな要因を分析する中から、そのような試みを成功させるために必要な要因も抽出することができた。たとえば、教員の確保とか親からのサポートというような点である。そのような実態調査研究にもとづき、JACET(大学英語教育学会)の大会において、CALP(学習言語能力)を育てるという面に焦点を合わせて、アジアの国々におけるさまざまな取り組みについてシンポジウムという形で発表した。その発表内容および国内外の教育機関の実態調査に関しては、報告書の中で研究分担者がそれぞれくわしく報告している。
    わが研究組織の本年度における一番顕著な実績は、著書『日本のバイリンガル教育-学校の事例から学ぶ-』(JACETバイリンガリズム研究会(編)、三修社、2003年12月、255pp.)の出版である。科学研究費補助金は単年度のものであったが、この本の出版は過去何年もの研究の積み重ねの上に成り立つものである。この本において、多様な日本のバイリンガル教育の実態が紹介され、その中でさまざまな議論と分析が行なわれている。日本におけるバイリンガル教育は、これまでのバイリンガリズムの研究からえられる知見をもとに、CALPを目ざして強力に推進されるべきことにつながる。この本は研究・実践の両面にわたり有益な情報を提供するものなので、これからバイリンガル教育に取り組もうとしている学校や先生にとって貴重な文献となるであろう。
