This study conducted a comparative analysis of the professional development of academic and administrative staff responsible for the internationalization of universities, focusing on Japan, the United States, and South Korea. In the first year, a review of existing literature in Japan and an analysis of faculty recruitment postings identified the required expertise, roles, contract terms, and challenges related to career development in the field of international education. In subsequent years, interviews and fieldwork were carried out, with particular attention to positions within the so-called “third space,” encompassing both faculty and administrative roles. The study examined personnel systems, professional development practices, and the structural challenges facing this emerging field. The findings provide insights for the future design of personnel systems and strategies for developing human resources in international education at Japanese universities.

It is crucial for university faculty to develop facilitation skills that make the best use of the cultural diversity of learners. For this study, we first collected and summarized relevant theories from previous studies. Then, we conducted several online workshops to explore current issues and conditions affecting the university faculty. We also invited a research collaborator from abroad to participate in the workshop. The results were published in the book Multicultural Facilitation: Educational Practices for Learning Together Through Diversity” (Akashi Publishers). We also translated “Manual for Developing Intercultural Competencies: Story Circles," published by UNESCO, into Japanese. We will continue to work to disseminate these results to a wider audience.

We conducted research on career support methods that pay attention to the plasticity of young people, and obtained the following findings.
    (1) A nurturing approach that fosters the client's basic skills as a member of society can be incorporated into all phases of job search support, based on the career counselor's thorough acceptance of the client.(2) Excellent career counselors help their clients to become aware of the connection between themselves, others, and society, and to live independently by fostering a proactive approach and an experiential style rooted in a sense of acceptance in order to improve their post-employment adjustment.(3) For clients with weak egos, career counselors help them verbalize and question their judgments on trivial matters, which leads to the development of an experience style rooted in a sense of conviction within the client.

Based on the previous project about Intercultural Collaborative Leaning (ICL) and the book published in 2019, we developed teaching materials that added the significance and methods of high-flex ICL and encompassed student-centered educational practices, such as pedagogy of ICL classes and the involvement of student supporters, which were all disseminated on our website. The results were also presented through papers, conference presentations, and workshops in Japan and abroad. We also initiated a large-scale ICL suevey targeting six universities in Japan. Although we faced some challenges, such as having to change the planned survey due to the spread of the new corona infection, we were able to achieve significant results, including the establishment of an Asia-specific "Internationalization at Home” model.

As a scale of international education practices rapidly expanded for the sake of globalization, one of the challenges at schools in Japan is a lack of international education practitioners capable of designing, operating, and evaluating programs that are theoretically reasonable, feasible for practitioners, and meaningful for leaners. We critically examined various theories and conceptual frameworks relevant to intercultural learning and personal growth and created a set of modules as a professional training workshop for international education practitioners. We went through a process of designing, operating and getting feedback from participants every year in order to improve the quality and feasibility of the workshop as well as conducting survey to understand the real voices of international education practitioners. We will continue offering this workshop regularly and also publish a self-study guidebook which illustrates the learning process offered by the workshop.

In this study, FMS (Focusing Manner Scale) that measures daily use of Focusing attitude was revised (FMS-18). After researching for three years, it was observed that FMS-18 had negative correlation with multiple stress response scales, positive correlation with Psychological Well-being scale and Authentic scale, which confirmed FMS-18’s construct validity. Covariance structure analysis revealed that Focusing attitude not only directly decreases stress response, but also increases work motivation, hence, indirectly decreases stress response as well. These results confirmed that FMS-18 is a useful scale for mental health.

As study abroad opportunities become diversified and more accessible, assessing the learning outcomes of those programs has become a critical issue for international educators. Assessing learning outcomes of students in study abroad programs in North America and Europe is widely practiced; however, Japanese universities still rely on output-based analysis. The current worldwide trend utilizes an e-portfolio system for outcome assessment while allowing students an opportunity for self-reflection. This research project analyzed recent models of learning outcome assessment and actual e-portfolio usage.
