オーデンが日中戦争中の中国を訪れ、旅行記を書いたが、そこには日本軍に対する批判的な視座があった。直後に渡米し、キリスト教に回帰し、アメリカに帰化してしまいイギリス人からは裏切り者のようにみなされることも多い。アメリカ移住を決め、キリスト教に回帰したことと、日中戦争を間近で見て、帝国主義の醜悪さを実感し、それが日本のもののみではなく、自国のそれに思い至ったこととの連関を調査中である。

Comparing the draft and finished edition of W.H.Auden's libretto and radio drama and MacNeice's radio drama, I also listened to the digitalised version of radio dramas because I think the music and sound used in the radio dramas is an essential element of the play. I found out that Auden taught Stravinsky intensively the versification of English poems before he composed The Rakes Progress. Auden was flexible when he wrote librettos indicating a stanza can be an aria or recitativo. MacNeice is less enthusiastic about music but he greatly appreciated Britten's contribution to his Dark Tower's success. He was very careful about the sound effect of the radio dramas.

オペラのリブレットにおける作曲家とリブレッティスタ（脚本家）の関係について、どんな問題が生じるかは複雑だがその１つに韻律という言語表現とそれに作曲家がどう向き合い、どういう音楽表現を与えるかという問題がある。作曲家とリブレッティスタが絡む問題には他に検閲の問題がある。各国文学とリブレットの関係ではイタリア文学の中のトルクヮート・タッソの『解放されたエルサレム』を取り上げ、そこからヘンデルの《リナルド》とロッシーニの《アルミーダ》が生まれたことを論じた。２０世紀の英詩人であるW.H.オーデンとチェスター・カールマンが共作でリブレットを書いた《放蕩者のなりゆき》とベンジャミン・ブリテンのオペラ《ルクレティアの陵辱》を取り上げた。

スペイン内戦を直接見聞することにより、詩人まくにーすの意識は揺すぶられ、それまで比較的中立であった態度から共和派へコミットするようになる。しかしながら、コミットを表明する仕方は、プロパガンダ的なものではなく、長詩『秋の日記』における音韻のシステム、とくに韻の踏み方およびスタンザの構成方法を徐々に変えていくことによってであった。その微細な変化のさせ方を解析し、独特のスタンザ構成法を明らかにした。一方、オーデンの場合には、スペイン内戦に関わった後に、日中戦争のさなか中国へ赴いたが、そこでは全く古典的なソネットを書いている。詩の韻律的構造が内面を保護してりう可能性を明らかにした。

モダニスト（ジョイス、エリオット）と1930年代詩人（オーデン、マクニース）がどのような詩をどんな考え方・詩法で創造したかを彼らを取り巻く当時の思想状況、それに反応して形成された彼らの世界との連関を明らかにし、その結果、どのような場合に伝統的な定型詩が選択され、どういう場合に自由詩が選択されたかを明らかにした。

モダニストの生育環境における宗教的要素がどう詩人・小説家の成長に関わったかを調べた。エリオットの祖父はユニテリアンの牧師でワシントン大学の創設者であった。イェイツの場合も祖父は国教会の牧師である。ジョイスはイェズス会系の学校に行き、神父になることを勧められ、迷った末に拒絶し、信仰からも離れてしまう。こうしたキリスト教との濃密な関わりを持った生育環境と、そこからの離脱が、彼らの世界観を形成する契機になった。

イギリスとイタリアにおける世紀末は、文学の世界においては頽廃的な雰囲気が濃厚で、詩のジャンルではロマン派以来の詩法が限界に達し、閉塞的状況となっていた。それを打開しようとして新たな詩法を試みたが結果としてはそれを達成し得なかったグループがイタリアではCorrazziniらのcrespucolari(黄昏派）であり、イギリスではLionel Johnson やErnest Dowsonであるが、これまであまり注意を払われてこなかったJohn Gray やGian Pietro Lucini の果たした役割がどう世紀末から２０世紀の詩の橋渡しに貢献したかを明らかにした。
