  • Communication Apprehension in the Workplace: The Role of Position and Facilitation Skills

     More details

Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)   Publisher:SAGE Publications

Communication apprehension (CA) is widely recognized as a significant inhibitor of communication and performance, making its management crucial. This study explored the connections between gender, managerial status, communication frequency, and discussion skills in explaining CA in the Japanese working population ( N = 300). Our findings suggest that facilitation skills explain CA better than personal attributes or communication frequency and that the gender difference in CA was only observed in nonmanagers. We discuss the implications of our findings for research and education.

  • Communication Apprehension in L1 and English: Interplay with Communication Frequency Reviewed

     More details

Language:Japanese   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)   Publisher:Tha Japan Business Communication Association

Communication apprehension(CA)is recognized to inhibit effective communication and
performance in first(L1)and foreign languages. However, studies on the relationship between
CA in L1 and English as a lingua franca, as well as the communication frequency, are limited. This
study employs the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension(PRCA-24)to compare
CA in L1(CAL1)and English(CAE)among undergraduate management students in Japan,
along with their relationship with communication frequency. The results for CAL1 are not
significantly different from those of young professionals from the U.S., with lower scores in the
interpersonal subscale and higher scores in the meetings subscale. Conversely, CAE scores are
higher than CAL1 scores across all four subscales. Moreover, the results for CAE are explained
by a linear model incorporating presentation frequency. The academic and pedagogical implications
of this study are also discussed.

  • The Impacts of Communication Channel Usage by CEO, Managers, and Peers on Internal Organizational Communication Reviewed

    82   37 - 46   2023.10

     More details

Language:Japanese   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

This study investigates which communication channels(e.g., face-to-face, videoconference, telephone, e-mail, texting, electronic documents, printed documents)within a company are
effective for communication between subordinates, peers, managers, and the CEO, respectively, using media richness theory and media synchronicity theory as theoretical frameworks. An
online survey of 400 full-time employees in large-sized corporations in Japan showed thatfrequencies of communication channel usage had significant impacts on employeesʼ perceived symmetrical communication and organization-employee relationships. Combinations of lean media(electronic documents)and rich media(face-to-face meetings or videoconferencing) were shown to be significant for symmetrical communication practices with managers and peers. Theoretical and practical implications for internal organizational communication are discussed.

  • Team communication in the workplace: Interplay of communication channels and performance Reviewed International journal

Business and Professional Communication Quarterly   2023.9

     More details

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)   Publisher:Association for Business Communication (ABC)

This study examines how communication channel use explains the effectiveness of workplace team communication through Media Richness Theory and Media Synchronicity Theory. It examines how job characteristics, personal attributes, communication channel usage, and team performance are interrelated in the workplace. The results of an online survey of 400 full-time employees and executives of large Japanese companies show that team communication effectiveness, including the degree of team coordination, inclusion, and performance satisfaction, can be explained through a combination of rich (synchronous) and lean (asynchronous) media use. The implications of using communication channels in the workplace are also discussed.

  • Strategic Communication Channel Selection at the Workplace: How Business Professionals make Productive Choices? Reviewed

    80   39 - 47   2021.10

     More details

Language:Japanese   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

The presence of digital media in the workplace continues to grow, thereby making it more important to choose the right communication channels.
This study explores the channel selection strategies of business professionals in Japan by conducting semi-structured interviews with 11 experienced business professionals.
In this study, we find that business professionals prefer email to communicate decisions and formal matters owing to the high control afforded by it.
However, they avoid using email to communicate ambiguous, complex, and emotional issues and try to complement face-to-face interaction by telephone.
Despite these preferences, business professionals have reported that these channel selection strategies and technologies are not uniform within the workplace.
This study provides rich descriptions of the media channel selection strategies implemented by business professionals.

  • A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Japanese and English Business Appointment-Request Emails: A Move Analysis

    72 ( 3,4 )   1 - 20   2025.3

     More details

    Language:Japanese

Understanding and sharing discourse structures are key to effective cross-cultural business
communication. This study analyzed 96 business emails, with 48 in Japanese and 48 in
English, using move analysis to explore the commonalities and unique characteristics of
routine business messages in both languages. It applied the Email Genre Model (EGM), which
includes four moves: opening, providing information, requesting, and closing. Our findings
reveal that EGM applies to business emails in both Japanese and English to arrange
meetings. Regarding cultural differences, Japanese messages frequently referred to previous
communications. However, English messages more commonly included explanations of
intentions, contexts, and personal opinions. Implications for business communication research
    and education are also discussed.

It is widely known that communication competency is regarded as key components for successful white-colors (METI, 2006; Reilly, E. ed. ,2013; Haga, Miyahara, Tasaki, and Shin, 2015). It is reported that cross cultural experiences would enhance intercultural competency(Deardorff, 2006) and it could develop communication competency simultaneously. This research will report how intercultural experience could contribute to the competency beyond language proficiency.
