    The aim of this research is to teach Japanese students skills of critical decision-making in a globalized society. Specifically, it is intended to provide the Japanese students with social communication skills, such as public debate and discussion (guest speaker: Thomas A. Hollihan, USC), intercultural awareness (guest speaker: Yuki Matsuda, University of Memphis), rhetorical analysis (Takeshi Suzuki), and pragma-dilectics (guest speaker: Frans van Eemeren, University of Amsterdam). In addition, it is intended to alter the current English education into a more active learning environment by asking the students to be a global citizen with the sense of common wisdom and public good.

    The aim of this project includes making English education for Japanese college students more oriented toward analysis of social and international problems so that they may interact with and persuade their partners. I believe that is essential for the survival and remaking of Japan in the 21^<st> century in the fields of education, politics and business. In addition to the section 5 "accomplishment," I made 100 copies of the project copies to be provided at the annual meeting of the Communication Association of Japan (JDA), lecture session at Dokkyo University, and this year's monthly meeting of the Japan Association of College English Teachers (JACET).

    (1)米国ピッツバーグ大学コミュニケーション学部でおこなわれて全米の注目を集めている「パブリック・ディベート・プログラム」をモデルとして調査した。これは学外の社会問題に関する専門家をキャンパスに実際に呼んで,学生代表とディベートさせるのみならず聴衆からの質疑応答や審査・判定をすることで,ディベートが大衆にどのような形で教育をおこなうことができるか,ディベートの前後でどのように世論が変化するかの研究をおこなうことを目的とする。8月の滞在中に,ディベートディレクターのゴードン・ミッチェル教授と共に,プログラムに参加したディベーター,質問者,司会者,聴衆にインタビューをおこなった。(2)ミッチェル教授から、練習風景を記録したビデオと実際のディベートを録画したビデオを含む,過去のプログラムに関する資料一式の寄贈を受けた。特筆すべきは,米国人学生が英語でディベートをおこなう場合でも、練習を重ねることでディベートのプレゼンテーション能力や討論能力が格段に伸びるという発見であった。(3)ディベートの最新理論と社会問題に関するディベートの事例研究に関する資料収集をおこなう目的でアムステルダム大学コミュニケーション学部の教授が中心となって編集している学術雑誌Argumentationの過去15年分のバックナンバーを購入した。
