    Development of a protein tertiary structure predicting method based on amino acid sequences is one of the most attractive research topics from the viewpoint of fulfilling probing intellectual curiosity as well as from a practical use side. The prediction accuracy of secondary structures has already reached 75%, and the packing prediction method of these secondary structures has been further developed. In this packing process, β sheet formation is one of the most important steps. In this study, the statistical scores were computed from the frequency of the inter-strand amino acid residue pairs based on experimental protein structure data, taking the existence of hydrogen bond formation into consideration. These scores were used for predicting the inter-strand register of interacting β strands from 8 alternative offset positions either side of the experimentally observed β sheet register and prediction accuracies were 38% and 35% of the antiparallel and parallel pairs, respectively. When the score obtained from the secondary structure prediction method was added to these statistic scores, accuracies went up to 40% and 38% for antiparallel and parallel strand pairs, respectively. Prediction accuracies for the strand triplets by moving the central strand became 50% and 52% when adding the scores obtained from secondary structure prediction. In any case, the percentage predicted as offset positions of 1 and 2 residues from the exact position was 5% or more, and the accuracies regarding the secondary structure prediction to all residues in β strand regions reached 68% and 80% for the strand pairs and for the strand triplets, respectively, exceeding the 58% accuracy from the secondary structure predicting method. Thus, the method developed in this study would be effective not only for prediction of the β strand register but also for β strand region prediction, and would make a valuable contribution to protein tertiary structure prediction.
