英国オクスフォード大学において英文学教授の地位が設置されたのは1893年と、比較的新しい話である。空席の期間を経て初代英文学教授（Walter A. Raleigh）が1904年に就任する。英文学が学問として成立するようになる過程で、英語学（英語文献学）との線引きはどのようになされてきたのか、関係した研究者らの足取りを追うことで、英文学が学として組織されたプロセスを明らかにしていく。
