Additive manufacturing (AM) is effective in custom-made fabrication. Currently, most orthoses are fabricated by prosthetists. If the fabrication processes are replaced with AM, the lead-time to completion can become brief. The authors have already proposed a finger orthosis, which has favorable structure for AM. However, 3D-CAD modeling for it is laborious and necessary work because the figure varies among patients. In this study, a 3D-CAD model template is proposed. The modeling process is divided into two processes, which are structure building and dimension adjustment, for users t0 operate it easily. In this software system, morphing algorithm is adopted not only for easy operation but also for easy addition of templates. The proposed system was implemented and a test orthosis was modeled.

Design parameters of industrial products are usually decided by testing some prototypes. The reduction of the number of prototyping and experiments leads to the short lead-time and low cost. Design Navigation Method (DNM) has been proposed to optimize the parameters that have complex relations to multiple evaluation items. DNM is built on the experimental design method and the information integration method, which evaluates multiple evaluation items with a unified criterion as the amount of information. However, DNM has not considered interaction effects among design parameters. In this paper, the problem in case that interaction effects are significant is discussed, and a modified-DNM is proposed as an analysis method in such case. As a case study, the modified-DNM is applied to a design problem of an electric circuit. Through the case study, it is confirmed that modified-DNM calculates optimized design parameters holding balance of multiple evaluation items although interaction effects are significant.

Tokyo Metropolitan University, Precision Engineering Department practiced a project-based class, namely the creative project, for the second year students from 2002 to 2005. In this class, students survey a given theme, define a problem, and propose a new product and project with its budget. Although this class does not include development of products, discussing what should be developed is an important factor in current design processes in accordance with customer needs. Moreover, creation, team working, and presentation are common to every engineering process. This paper introduces a framework of this class, and discusses the learning effects of students on the basis of the results of questionnaire.

Work motion recognition is an important function for computer support systems to provide novice workers autonomous instruction by monitoring human behavior. Since manual work, such as assembling work, is performed by seamless motion at variable speed, it needs special solution in pattern matching problems. This paper proposes one type of syntactic pattern matching method for motion recognition in human work. The proposed algorithm has two steps of pattern matching. The first process is to divide a time series of motion data into a relatively short time motion by defined conditions, and to assign a symbol of motion type to the potion data. The second one is to compare the symbol stream with work models In this process, Dynamic Programming (DP) matching method is used. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to adapt the variable work speed even if short time motion model is used.

This paper deals with work monitoring for autonomous computer support. We have mentioned that a key technology for realizing autonomous support is computer recognition of a work sequence and work motion performed by human workers. In this paper, the effectiveness of using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) for monitoring human work is discussed. Since RFID can identify the individual tag without physical contact, the work sequence is monitored by the detection of the RFID tag that is set on assembly parts. This function of RFID leads to the realization of a parallel monitoring structure that is a reliable recognition process of a work sequence, and a motion recognition algorithm without position sensing that had some problems in assembly environments. Experimental results show that RFID is effectively used for monitoring a work sequence and ensuring motion recognition in mechanical assembly work.

Engineering education is being recognized to be more important to maintain high position in Japanese technology advantage. However, the technology detachment becomes serious among young people. In order to avoid such circumstances, appropriate engineering education systems are being searched. We are designing a CAD/CAE education system with an attempt of combining real and digital mockup concept into an exercising schooling. As a background, we have introduced a new CAD/CAE system including solid modeler (SolidWorks), structure analysis with FEM (DesignSpace) and mechanical analysis system (DDM) for every student. After learning the operation with exercises for 1.5 years, this final exercising lessons are to be learned. As a real product base, we choose LEGO block. The aim of this exercise is to make the student to know the importance of real and digital consideration for any mechanical design.

In usual design process of machine products such as machine tools, most designers concentrate on the improvement of technical specification of the product. However, all products should be designed as those users' needs are realized. And the design process in which users' needs are extracted and reflect on the product should be expressed clearly. In this paper, a new design process that composes of both technology-oriented cycle and needs-oriented cycle is proposed. We call it needs-technology cycle. The design process was applied to a design of CNC lathe. The results of evaluation of the developed CNC lathe show that both user satisfaction and efficiency of user's work are improved more than an ordinal CNC lathe.

The sequences of disassembly/reassembly tasks for maintenance or repair have many variation in accordance with the task aim and the task site environment. The decision of the sequence has been left to an expert. However, due to the diversification of products, the shortage of experts is becoming a problem. It is important to accumulate the experts' knowledge of task sequences which include sequences for temporal tacking and mechanism adjusting tasks. In this paper, a knowledge representation method for the task sequences using a directed graph and a construction method of the task sequence knowledge using ATMS (Assumption base Truth Maintenance System) are proposed. A case study shows that the proposed task support system, which presents an appropriate task sequence and estimated task contents, is useful for unskilled workers to plan the disassembly/ressembly tasks.

This paper deals with a method for presenting reaction forces in virtual assembly environments, which is used for instructing or training techniques of assembly works. There is an important demand for the reaction force on stress of parts in the virtual assembly environment. In this paper, the C-Space (Configuration Space) representation and the hierarchical processing are proposed for satisfying the demand. The C-Space can represent all stress relations of parts clearly, and can indicate the current location immediately by making the space divided into some zones of geometrically important states for works. The hierarchical processing is realized with two-levels layer and reduces the calculation delay for controlling the reaction force. The qualitative level processing recognizes a task by kinematic reasoning with the C-Space, and the quantitative level processing calculates the reaction force by task based reaction models and physical data. A case study with two experiments shows that the method is effective for presenting reaction forces on a screw tightening work.
