Recent advancements in tele-operated avatars, both on-screen and robotic, have expanded opportunities for human interaction that exceed spatial and physical limitations. While numerous studies have enhanced operator control and improved the impression left on remote users, one area remains underexplored: the experience of operators during touch interactions between an avatar and a remote interlocutor. Touch interactions have become commonplace with avatars, especially those displayed on or integrated with touchscreen interfaces. Although the need for avatars to exhibit human-like touch responses has been recognized as beneficial for maintaining positive impressions on remote users, the sensations and experiences of the operators behind these avatars during such interactions remain largely uninvestigated. This study examines the sensations felt by an operator when their tele-operated avatar is touched remotely. Our findings reveal that operators can perceive a sensation of discomfort when their on-screen avatar is touched. This feeling is intensified when the touch is visualized and the avatar reacts to it. Although these autonomous responses may enhance the human-like perceptions of remote users, they might also lead to operator discomfort. This situation underscores the importance of designing avatars that address the experiences of both remote users and operators. We address this issue by proposing a tele-operated avatar system that minimizes unwarranted touch interactions from unfamiliar interlocutors based on social intimacy.

When people are talking together in front of digital signage, advertisements that are aware of the context of the dialogue will work the most effectively. However, it has been challenging for computer systems to retrieve the appropriate advertisement from among the many options presented in large databases. Our proposed system, the Conversational Context-sensitive Advertisement generator (CoCoA), is the first attempt to apply masked word prediction to web information retrieval that takes into account the dialogue context. The novelty of CoCoA is that advertisers simply need to prepare a few abstract phrases, called Core-Queries, and then CoCoA automatically generates a context-sensitive expression as a complete search query by utilizing a masked word prediction technique that adds a word related to the dialogue context to one of the prepared Core-Queries. This automatic generation frees the advertisers from having to come up with context-sensitive phrases to attract users’ attention. Another unique point is that the modified Core-Query offers users speaking in front of the CoCoA system a list of context-sensitive advertisements. CoCoA was evaluated by crowd workers regarding the context-sensitivity of the generated search queries against the dialogue text of multiple domains prepared in advance. The results indicated that CoCoA could present more contextual and practical advertisements than other web-retrieval systems. Moreover, CoCoA acquired a higher evaluation in a particular conversation that included many travel topics to which the Core-Queries were designated, implying that it succeeded in adapting the Core-Queries for the specific ongoing context better than the compared method without any effort on the part of the advertisers. In addition, case studies with users and advertisers revealed that the context-sensitive advertisements generated by CoCoA also had an effect on the content of the ongoing dialogue. Specifically, since pairs unfamiliar with each other more frequently referred to the advertisement CoCoA displayed, the advertisements had an effect on the topics about which the pairs spoke. Moreover, participants of an advertiser role recognized that some of the search queries generated by CoCoA fit the context of a conversation and that CoCoA improved the effect of the advertisement. In particular, they learned how to design of designing a good Core-Query at ease by observing the users’ response to the advertisements retrieved with the generated search queries.

The recognition of indicated objects by interacting people is an essential function for robots that act in daily environments. However, due to ambiguous references by them, accurate recognition of indicated objects have difficulties for the robots. For example, people sometimes use the words which did not contain in the robots' databases, or they did not use enough words to identify the object. Therefore, to improve recognition accuracy, we must decrease such ambiguity of indicating behaviors of people. For this purpose, we experimentally compared two kinds of interaction strategies to decrease the ambiguity: explicitly providing requests to people about how to refer to objects, or implicitly aligning with people's indicating behaviors. The experimental results showed that participants evaluated the implicit strategy to be more natural than the explicit strategy, and the recognition performances of the two strategies were not significantly different.

This paper proposes a multimodal interactive approach to improving recognition performance of objects a person indicates to a robot. We considered two phenomena in human-human and human-robot interaction to design the approach: alignment and alignment inhibition. Alignment is a phenomenon that people tend to use the same words or gestures as their interlocutor uses; alignment inhibition is an opposite phenomenon, which people tend to decrease the amount of information in their words and gestures when their interlocutor uses excess information. Based on the phenomena, we designed robotic behavior policies that a robot should use enough information without being excessive to identify objects so that people would use similar information with the robot to refer to those objects, which would contribute to improve recognition performance. To verify our design, we developed a robotic system to recognize the objects to which people referred and conducted an experiment in which we manipulated the redundancy of information used in the confirmation behavior. The results showed that proposed approach improved recognition performance of objects to which referred by people.
