    Abstract

    This study presents the empirical mode decomposition method (EMD) for vehicle vibration and a correlation detection approach for input from road and vehicle body vibration using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). Although the magnitude squared coherence is commonly used to examine the correlation of vehicle vibration with road input, it is not suitable for non-stationary vibration. On the other hand, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) which consists of EMD and the Hilbert transform is proposed. This method is suitable for transient vibration analysis, while the drawbacks to intermittence signals are suggested. Vehicle vibration signals include intermittence signals in some cases. In this study, the masking EMD which adapts the mask signal to the amplitude of the target signal was applied to vehicle vibration to alleviate the drawbacks. By this method, the correlation analysis by HHT demonstrates higher temporal resolution compared to the continuous wavelet transform. Thus, it becomes possible to identify the components that caused vibrations at the moments when the passengers felt comfortable or uncomfortable, and to analyze the characteristics of the vibrations.

    Abstract

    The aim of this study is to generate a surrogate model of a suspension system with high stiffness elements for real-time analysis using machine learning. A Long Short-Term Memory networks was used as a machine learning method to generate surrogate models for three-degree-of-freedom quarter car model with a bush element. To evaluate the performance of the machine learning models, the simulation results and computation time were compared with the 3DOF model. As a result, it was confirmed that the response of the body acceleration was predicted with good accuracy by predicting the bush deformation and calculating the body acceleration based on the prediction results, instead of predicting the body acceleration directly. It was also confirmed that the machine learning model can accurately predict the body acceleration in less calculation time than the original model.

    Steering reactive torque of an automobile is a significant factor of human-automobile system. This paper describes an analysis model of steering effort on steady state cornering, which contains the information of steering geometry. Some running tests with a racing kart were carried out in order to evaluate characteristics of steering reactive torque, and it was shown that the experimental results agree with the simulation results with proposed steering effort model.

    Virtual performance test of automobile with a driving simulator is proposed in this paper. Multibody dynamics is applied to our driving simulator for precise analysis of automobile behavior. The estimation of suspension setting with driving simulator can be achieved by multibody dynamics. Real-time analysis of multibody dynamics is a key technology of this proposal. Some performance tests with developed driving simulator were executed, and it was shown that the estimation of dynamics characteristics of automobile is possible with developed driving simulator.

    In this paper, the authors propose a real-time multibody analysis method for automobile. This analysis method realizes real-time analysis with 91 degrees of freedom automobile model. The purpose of this proposal is to develop driving simulator with multibody vehicle model, and this proposed analysis method is successfully applied to our driving simulator with 6-axes motion system. The performance and accuracy of proposed real-time analysis method are investigated in this paper.

    The estimation of ride comfort characteristics of automobile by driving simulator with motion device is proposed in this paper. Making use of the driving simulator with multibody automobile model that has already been developed by the authors, the influence of the specifications of suspension on ride comfort characteristics can be investigated in detail. By the experiments with driving simulator, it was shown that developed driving simulator can realize the vibration of automobiles to the extents of the frequency of 3 Hz, and that the vibration characteristics of driving simulator varies by changing the specifications of vehicle model.

    This paper describes a new concept of deriving the analysis model for real-time simulation from the model of multibody systems, and presents suitable algorithm for real-time simulation. For real-time simulation, it is shown that the approximation of constraint equation and the transformation of coordinate in equations of motion are effective for reducing calculation. By numerical simulations of automobile, it is shown that the proposed real-time method achieves high-speed calculation with satisfactory accuracy.

    Rubber bush used in the suspension of an automobile is a significant element for the riding comfort and the driving stability. Since the rubber bush has a high stiffness, a vehicle model with rubber bushes has high natural frequencies. In the analysis of such a stiff system, a small time-step is required to consider the high natural frequency. As a result, the amount of the calculation is increased. However, in real-time analysis, it is necessary to calculate each step of numerical integration within a specified time. Therefore, real-time analysis of a stiff system requires high computational efficiency. In this paper, the formulation of multibody dynamics and the method of numerical integration were investigated for the real-time analysis of the stiff systems, and the execution speed and the accuracy of analysis were evaluated.

    This paper presents road tests of electromagnetic damper for automobiles. The authors propose electromagnetic damper system for automobiles for improved ride comfort and compatibility between stability and isolation. The electromagnetic damper (EMD) uses DC motor as generator, so it can electronically control damping force. Former trial EMD had linear characteristics of damping force, but the authors developed power electronics circuit for EMD to have nonlinear damping force, and proved that the EMD system has suitable ability for automobile damper from experiments using new damper system. This time, we equipped electromagnetic dampers with an automobile, and did the road tests to make sure of its nonlinearization of damping force.

    Multibody system analysis is applied to development of automobile, and it becomes possible by multibody system analysis to investigate thoroughly the characteristics of automobile, for example, the performance of vehicle dynamics and the riding comfort. In this paper, the authors propose to apply the method of multibody dynamics to driving simulator with six-degrees-of-freedom motion system. By this proposal, the characteristics of driving simulator become very similar to the actual automobiles. It is possible to predict the performance of vehicle dynamics and the riding comfort by feeling test without prototyping automobile. The aim of conventional driving simulator is the estimation of human characteristics represented by identification of driver model. In addition, the proposed simulator can be used as a tool of automobile development.

    The modeling of viscoelastic elements such as rubber bushes and the efficient analysis methods of multibody system including viscoelastic elements are discussed. The analysis of multibody system with viscoelastic elements tends to be unstable because those systems contain high eigenfrequency. In this study, the efficiency of multibody system analysis with viscoelastic elements described with the generalized Maxwell model are investigated.
