    Abstract

For years, Nagasaki officials discussed and negotiated with residents from local communities in each municipality in order to prepare their nomination proposal for unesco’s World Heritage list. The core heritage narrative of the “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region” proposal took shape around Catholic church buildings and heritage materials. In this article, the author argues that as the World Heritage narrative emphasizes the historic materiality of these heritage buildings, Catholic materiality has been somewhat secularized as the nomination progressed. In order to avoid stirring up controversy, Nagasaki’s public officials delicately used the heritage churches as the material intermediaries to moderate the uneasy relationships among the locals as well as to connect it with the interests of the national actors.

Law imposes forms of orders on communication patterns; it advantages those with legal training and can concurrently alienate those outside of legal discourse. In this project, I examined communication patterns between Japanese municipal officials and residents in island communities who will be affected by a World Heritage nomination project. In times of legal reform, government officials and legal practitioners may not be familiar with the new corpus, and subsequently there may be uncertain order in communication patterns. Based on my fieldwork investigating a World Heritage preparation project in Japan, I discuss how law can direct the communication patterns of government officials, and at the same time, it can alienate officials from the local residents because of their restricted communications, which can in turn become an obstacle for the nomination project itself.

The Japanese oratory arts, represented by rakugo, contain refined cultural and linguistic elements and are valuable to Japanese pedagogy. We held rakugo performances for foreign students, and through survey and interview techniques, obtained a view of the students’ understandings. Furthermore, by analyzing video recordings of the students viewing the performances, we performed research about the position of laughter by the students within the flow of the performance. Also, using videos of “kobanashi,” we developed and tested an e-learning program which provides outlines of the stories, captions, quizzes and explanations of difficult parts, and which makes visible moments the users feel to be entertaining or difficult.

Rakugo is an oratory art of Japan which features a unique format. While the essence of Japanese culture is distilled within rakugo, it has often been avoided as being too difficult for learners. In order to bring to light Japanese learners’ understandings of Japanese humor, we have developed research materials and considered methods for analyzing learners’ understandings of them. The materials consist of approximately 20 hours of audio/video recordings of live rakugo performances for foreign students. The materials include recordings of a breadth of varieties of rakugo, including tellings by both Edo and Kamigata performers, and performances keyed to both elementary and intermediate/advanced level learners. These materials were then edited and transcribed. As a methodology for analyzing learners’ understandings of the materials, in addition to conversation analysis, instruments such as survey questionnaires, and responses through drawing were also employed.
