The aim of this paper is to sketch the form of sports and body culture in contemporary era keeping distance from modern ideology, and to propose its value. Tokyo Olympic in 1964 was an event symbolizing Japan's years of hope, which supported the high economic growth. In contrast,we are in "the era of impossibility". What sort of social transformation can the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bring about? In order to answer this question, first of all, we examine the Norbert Elias thesis which discussed the concept of balance between excitement and suppression and the social function of sports. And now, at the epidemic of cynicism, it is argued that it is difficult for us to feel excitement and to acquire sense of existence in society. Secondly, I discuss body theory, especially from the perspective of the body-technology relationship, and from the perspective of others theory in body. Today, it is assumed that the body is surviving along with technology as foreign substance, and that the body inevitably coexists with others who can't predict and can't understand. I draw out the image of the body that continue to maintain social relations with foreign substance and foreign people in a diversified society. Finally, as you live with foreign substance and foreign people, the body embody a sense of rhythm and gliding, and this new body image forms the basis of comtemporary body culture. I will clarify that this body culture that internalizes rhythm and gliding sensation present the new possibilities of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Society.

In the era when Mr.Soetsu Yanagi lived, Japan was in an era of growth and war from the end of the Meiji era to the Showa era. But the two spiritual fathers - Mr.Kaishu Katsu and Mr. Jigoro Kanou- brought up Soetsu Yanagi in a very liberal environment. Mr. Yanagi did not believe that reason and logical way led to human understanding, but rather deprived human freedom. He thought that what is needed to insight human freedom, human diversity and discordant world is the imagination beyond reason. But the imagination is not universal either. For this reason, Yanagi's central problem was how to gain imagination and a deeper understanding on the world. Soetsu was inspired by the research of William Blake and the stone Buddha temple in Gyeongju-Korea. And the next interest of him is Mokujiki Budda in Japan. It led to the discovery of Korea and Japan. He will make imagination work for various subjects. It was also a work to confirm each individuality and empathy while comparing various things. There was a round-trip movement of imagination towards mutual understanding. This has become a strategic way of Yanagi to understand the diverse world.

The objectives of this paper is to shed a light on the question regarding what is the pitfall of the body and sports in the modern era by taking a broad historical perspective into the reexamination of the issue.<br> For this purpose, this paper first briefly overviews the elemental form of learning and body in GreekRoman period, when the unique character of Western Civilization was formed. In that period, the erotic relations in ecstasies were considered to have a function of education, which deepens one's knowledge about the world. Second, this study will show that in medieval era the chivalry, as a unique product of interaction between feudal ethics and Christian thought, created and spread out the idea that only by going beyond trials and suffering one can attain romance and happiness. The concept of education as a process of perseverance emerged during this period. Third, in the transition from feudalism to modernity, the conception that the true and pure moral attitude rests upon identification of social duty as one's inner desire was passed down. The conception gave rise to the legitimacy of modern state's imperative to discipline body of individual, which was regarded as the most "private" sphere of life. Fourth, this study reveals that it is the modernity that redefined the world of sports which had been limited status culture of knight class as the universal and idealized body culture. As a result, the core idea of the modern education that it was necessary to create the spontaneous motivation in inside of individuals came into being. This led to the transformation of the social function of sports from creating mutual respects among unequal players to producing hierarchical orders through the competitions among equal players. <br> Through the above-mentioned discussion, this article argues that the problem of sports and education in modern and contemporary society has its roots in the pre-modern ages, and that we need a broad and historical perspective to solve the problems and to liberate body and education.

This article examines tournament in Middle Ages, which was not examined in Elias's analysis of the origin of sports from his cultural sociological perspective. This study shows that the sports and sportsmanship, which have been supposed to be invented in modern Britain, actually evolved in the games of tournament.<br>Tournament is the one and only sport that could attract broad social attention in Europe in the Middle Ages. The transformation of the style of this particular competition is consistent with maturing morals of knights and the process of development of mechanisms that forced knights to keep violence under control. This article examines this process from a socio-historical perspective. It is true that this moralistic world-respect for lives, restraint on private desire, contribution to the public, and protection of the weak-could not reform reality of feudal society in the Middle Ages. However, it created a peculiar form of love, namely courtly love, and the great popularity of knight stories and tournament inscribed it into the European culture. It survived in the European spirit long after the Middle Ages.<br>Later, when English gentlemen stratum was urged to redefine their identity in the particular political and cultural situation in modern Britain, they rediscovered and reconstructed the moralistic world that was dreamed of in the tournament game in the past. In conclusion, this article shows that &lsquo;sportsmanship&rsquo; is a unique European concept. Since sportsmanship can never be a universal idea, we must be careful about its application to diverse cultures that have developed unique forms of training social bodies.

Montesquieu and Pareto were the sociologists who took great interest in the Roman History, and recognized the unique movements of social history in it.<br> Montesquieu proposed the concept of "le principe" that worked as an equilibrator between sentiments and reason. And in his Considérations sur les Causes de la Grandeur des Romains et de leur Décadence, Montesquieu discussed that the equilibrator worked successfully during the Roman development, but that when the equilibrator failed because of frictions between sentiments and reason, Rome had finally become decadent.<br> Whereas Pareto, after having refined The General Theory of Economie Equilibrium, was quite aware of the difference between economy and society. The awareness made him discuss the Roman History to construct The General Theory of Sociology: Traité de Sociologie Générale. He proposed the concept of "les résidus" that meant uncontrollable sentiments by reason. According to his theory, two kinds of residues, residue of combination and residue of persistence of groups, which had govemed the Roman Society in tums, had created "la circulation" of elites, and thence the dynamics of the Roman History.<br> The main contrast of views between Montesquieu and Pareto, which 1 discussed in this paper, were seen in their methods and situations of Social Equilibrium, and images of historical dynamics. In these different views of Rome, which left traces in every unique characters of their social theories and historical outlooks, we can find the social transformation that took place within two centuries between them.

Peter L. Berger once wrote an article, discussing the obsolescence of the concept of &ldquo;honor&rdquo; as the result of the rise of the modern consciousness. This article could be seen as an eloquent witness asserting &ldquo;honor&rdquo; to be the core of values, and the most important principle of constructing a society in the long duration of pre-modern societies. And the concept still is among the significant values after the considerable modification in the modern age.<BR>In sociological theories, &ldquo;honor&rdquo; is referred as a goal of value-oriented action within the action theory : as a moment of integration to fortify the cohesiveness of groups.<BR>However, the relations of power to man (types of power-relationships) should not be ignored, in analysing the value &ldquo;honor&rdquo;. On what basis of integration is a particular power formed ? And in what relationship is man engaged in it ? These questions are important in order to define the social implications and characteristics of &ldquo;honor&rdquo;. I deal with this problem by adopting the concept of &ldquo;value-basis of power&rdquo; and determine the sociological significance of &ldquo;honor&rdquo; as value. For the purpose of this analysis, I examine the European thoughts and literatures all the way from the Classical Antiquity through the Christianity and up to the Early Modernity. Thus I discuss the theoretical elements of the transformation of the concept of &ldquo;honor&rdquo;.

In this article I deal with the aspects of "value", and assert the necessity and importance to clarify the concept of "transcendental value". Although the "transcendental value" cannot be fully interpreted in terms of behaviorist- or interactionist- theories, this was always at the core of the theories of sociologists like George Simmel, Max Weber, and others. After pointing out this fact, I briefly review the historical evolution of the concept of value in order to determine the nature and denotation of the "transcendental value". This concept does not obviously have metaphisical nature, nontheless mysticisit one. It makes up the very heart of a cultural entity, without wich a culture at any time or space can not maintain its integrity. It is the value that corresponds to the requirement of "salvation" on the part of man. I further discuss with the great modification the modern "money economy" has brought about to the phenomenology of the "transcendental value".
