This research project has examined specific cases of the local inspection systems of the Yuan dynasty, using basic data collected from inscriptions and stone monuments, databases of classical Chinese materials, and the "Quan Yuan Wen", and had compared differences of status of implementation in the North and South of China (Jiangnan and North China).
This study clarified the ritual and social activities of inspectors of the Yuan-dynasty office of Surveillance Commission as well as their specific efforts to educate and recruit in the regions. In addition, the high percentage of inspectors were appointed from northern China. This fact points to the significant role of the local inspector system and its importance in the history of the Chinese governmental system during the Yuan dynasty.

While the attention to the role of the Mongol Empire on the world history was attracted in these days, I paid attention, in particular, to terminology as "China" and examined it to think about how people in those days recognized those period. There is a point of view of historical research that "China" became wider in the Mongol period, but I made it clear that the reach of "China" Jiangnan intellectuals those days considered didn't spread by means of researching what and where "China" pointed, and what kind of nuance it had. I also mentioned about the difference in consciousness about it among intellectuals in North China and Jiangnan, the relationship between Lingnan (including Guangzhou) and Jiangnan, and the position of Yuan period in the Jiangnan history.

When did“pilgrimages”first appear in Chinese history? This study made following findings.
1)Pilgrimages appeared during the Tang dynasty and reached a peak in the early 9th century. However, they declined after the anti-Buddhist persecution of the Huichang era.So we can interpret that Tang dynasty had a sense of crisis to“equated pilgrimage with transfer”.2)The painting of the murals of Wutaishan at Dunhuang were stimulated by pilgrimage to Wutaishan in the early 9th century. The original image was the result of the Sino-Tibetan Peace Treaty that ceded the territory to the Tibetans in Changqing 4.
3)Pilgrimage experienced a revivalin the latter half of the 9th century. When this fact is linked with the Song, pilgrimage becomes an issue in the upheaval that marked the Tang-Song transition.4)There was additionally publication of New edition of the comprehensive catalogue of the location of Tang-dynasty epitaphs,Collection of source materials on the inscriptions of stone sutras at Fangshan.

I studied on the cultural policy of Mongol government in China of the Mongol period, and mainly analyzed political importance of the rituals to worship the gods of the Five Mountains and the Four Rivers by comparing with the religious ceremonies and rituals of the other Chinese dynasties. I could point out that there should be the territory image, or the image of whole country Tianxia behind of holding ceremonies to worship the gods of the Mountains and Rivers, which were recognized as the geniuses of four directions, by the Mongol government. I figured that the ceremonies and rituals to worship them were respected and held repeatedly, because only Mongol government controlled whole of China proper in the Mongol period.
Many past papers emphasized the effect of the Mongol rule and characteristic of the period. But I pointed out that the idea and feature of the cultural policy in China of the Mongol period systematically followed policies of precedent dynasties in China.

Our research focuses on stone stele inscriptions from the 6th through the 9th centuries, from the Late Southern and Northern Dynasties period through the Sui and Tang, collecting them into a database and using them as the basis for research into regional society and culture. Today gravestones, epitaphs, and other stone inscriptions are valued as primary sources, but the lack of a comprehensive systematization and categorization of these materials has hindered the sharing of information and understanding about them. We have sought to remedy this through collecting and organizing these materials and entering them into a database, as well as studying them. In terms of specific results we offer the following :
    1. We identified the location of approximately 7000 Tang-era grave inscriptions and published them as Catalog of Bibliographic Sources Tomb Inscriptions from Tang Period(Shinpan Todai boshi shozai sogo mokuroku). This project was hailed by scholars both here and abroad as a valuable contribution to our knowledge of grave inscriptions from this period.
    2. We published the first comprehensive summaries of pre-Tang grave inscriptions as Catalog of Bibliographic Sources Tomb Inscriptions from Sui Period(Zuidai boshi shozai sogo mokuroku, 483 entries) and Catalog of Bibliographic Sources Tomb Inscriptions from Northern Dynasties Period(Hokucho boshi shozai sogo mokuroku, 779 entries). In addition, We translated Ma Changshou's Beiming suojian Qianqin zhi Suichu de Guanzhong buzu 碑銘所見前秦至隋初的関中部族(111 entries), which discusses ethnographic issues in Guanzhong(Shanxi Province) from the Northern Dynasties through Sui using stone inscriptions ; our translation added a number of relevant inscriptions and generally contributed to an understanding of regional society.
    3. In order to enable access and organized dissemination of stone inscriptions and related materials over the long term, We established the Institute of East Asian Epigraphy and Stone Artifacts, Meiji University(the Higashi Ajia Sekkoku Bunbutsu Kenkyujo at Meiji University) and published the inaugural issue of its organ, the Journal of East Asian Epigraphy(Higashi Ajia sekkoku kenkyu). Along with this we have been collecting valuable rubbings of inscriptions, working to acquire newly produced reports and discoveries, and preparing annual exhibits and symposia drawn from these materials, to which we have added explanatory essays(these will be held annually beginning next year).
    4. On-site research is essential in the study of stone inscriptions. We have taken graduate students and young scholars on three trips to the Shandong, Hunan, and Hubei regions to study ruins and visit artifact repositories. We have reported the results of these trips to study groups, and discussed them in two published reports.
    5. Researchers working under our direction have reported their results in two seminars, Issues Relating to Chinese Stone Inscriptions and Buddhism in the Northern
