The historical development of college counseling in Japan and the United States is compared in this article. A literature research indicated several commonalities between the two countries. i) Both have attempted to get college counseling accepted in universities and colleges as an educational activity. ii) This attempt has been influenced by historical and social factors. iii) Currently, college counseling centers in both countries have many student clients with a wide range of complex psychological problems and the centers also share responsibility for answering with demands for providing cost effective and accountable services. Differences were also identified between the two countries. i) College counseling in the United States has more support at the national level, and can obtain organizational support for reconciling conflicts between students and university administrators than in Japan. ii) In Japan, there is a division of roles between student personnel offices and counseling centers, and there is also a tendency to use group counseling for reconciling conflicts. Finally, certain future issues and suggestions for Japanese college counseling are proposed.

Websites of student counseling centers in Japan and the United States were analyzed and differences between websites in the two countries in recent decades were discussed. Websites of 242 centers in the 2004 survey, and 335 centers in the 2013 survey conducted in Japan were compared with 331 centers in the 2005 survey, and 282 centers in the 2013 survey conducted in the United States. Results indicated that the amount of information on the websites had increased and more information required by users was offered in both countries. Results also showed that there were significant differences in websites, based on the size and type of universities and colleges, with larger institutions showing more information on their websites. Comparative analysis indicated that there was more information on websites in the United States compared to those in Japan and that this tendency remained unchanged in recent decades. Moreover, the types of information offered on websites were different between the two countries. Finally, student counseling methods in Japan are discussed and the necessity for international comparison is suggested.

Types of student counseling centers in Japanese universities were classified and factors related to their development were investigated. A questionnaire was sent to 729 universities and 356 replies (48.9%) were returned. Of these, data of 268 student counseling centers were analyzed. Factor analysis of the responses indicated six factors: "Administrative interest", "University's history," "Consistency of counselors' beliefs and counseling services," "Autonomy as an organization," "Development," and "Changing times." The Student Counseling Center Formation Scale was constructed on the basis of these factors. Cluster analysis was conducted on the subscale scores of the scale, which indicated five clusters. By examining the characteristics of these clusters, five types of clusters were abstracted: "lacking necessary conditions for providing services," "lacking autonomy as an organization," "having discrepancies in direction of services," and "rich in conditions for providing services." This article reviews studies on clinical psychology conducted between July 2011 and June 2012 and identifies the following categories of studies: (1) relationship between psychological factors and adjustment (including psychological scale development), (2) developing, or improving psychotherapy, (3) projective techniques, (4) developmental tasks of―adolescence, (5) adjustment and problem behaviors of junior high school and high school students, (6) life-span development and family relationships of females, (7) psychological support and counseling in schools, (8) supporting child development, (9) supporting people with disorders, or serious illnesses, and (10) mental health of professionals providing interpersonal services. These studies were analyzed from the perspective of educational counseling and the findings indicate that researchers should continue working in clinical fields and conduct research based on clinical practice. Moreover, educational psychology should accumulate knowledge from case studies. Furthermore, there is a need for exchanges between educational and clinical psychologists, and there is also a need for collaborative research between Japan and neighboring Asian countries.

Information on websites regarding student counseling services in 331 universities in the USA was analyzed. Reading website contents indicated 36 information categories related to these services. Results of analyzing these categories indicated that many student counseling services in universities in the USA have sufficient information to utilize. To make clear the features of American universities, comparison analysis conducted. Differences were found between the USA and Japan in the categories of information. Websites in the USA had more information than those in Japan, and moreover, the information gap among the universities was smaller compared to Japan. It is suggested that the differences in the websites of the two countries reflect differences in attitude regarding student counseling services in the USA and Japan.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between image and familiarity that college students had about student counseling service and their willingness to make use of the service. A questionnaire was administered to 421 college students. Factor analysis of the image found two positive sides: helpfulness and support in crisis, and two negative ones: disadvantage and uneasiness. Men had an image that was higher on support in crisis and disadvantage than women. Women were more familiar with the service, but no sex difference was found in the willingness to visit it. First-year students were lower in terms of their familiarity, but no image differences were found among students of different years. Regression analysis of the willingness indicated that different predictors became significant, depending on the sex and year of the respondents. It was suggested that different information about counseling service should be disseminated, so as to maximize the willingness, depending on the sex and year of the students.

Websites of 242 universities were analyzed to determine how information on student counseling services is presented. Reading the web content indicated that 25 information categories related to such services, and that the number of information categories increased in proportion to the size of universities. Through the analysis of web content, the type of information was categorized into two latent dimensions: "the provision of information" and "the diversification of information". Using these two dimensions, information categories was classified as "important information", "additional information", and "special information". The pattern of information in the websites of student counseling services was classified into four groups, and the characteristics of each group were described. Finally, several ideas regarding the publication of information on student counseling services in university websites were suggested.

This article explained the activities during two years and a half in a counseling organization that reopened at a private college. In analyzing the process, it was indicated that the problems as an organization such as having no college regulation and no steering committee affected its closing. Because the counselor was a teacher of a teacher-training course, effective human networks within the college were mainly created not through practices that were specific to counseling but through that of the teacher-training course. From the results of the survey, it was proved that publicity activities in the early stage were very effective. In conclusion, in order to place the counseling organization more firmly as an organization at the college, it was effective to receive information about the college by using human networks and placing counseling services as a service of the teaching staffs of the department. As a view of the future activities, it was suggested to appeal its meaning to the teachers and clerks more actively and to make students possible to use it without reserve.

This study presents five new scales that can measure"appraisals" of fear and anxiety induced by others. Towards this end, I designed and then administrated a questionnaire comprised of 47 people-induced fear and anxiety items and 3 corresponding pleasure-feeling ones to 283 subjects. Factor analysis was subsequently conducted and five factors were obtained,i.e., (1)fear from intervention by others, (2)fear from a lack of understanding others, (3)fear from the wild behavior of others, (4)fear of hatred or rejection by others, (5)fear from the revelation of self inferiority by others. Next, I constructed five corresponding people-induced fear and anxiety scales using the resultant factor loading scores. Correlations between these scales and pleasure-feeling ones were discussed.

Objective:
Following recent developments in information technology, nearly all university students now have mobile phones and communicate with each other using SNSs (Facebook, Twitter, LINE, and the like).However, most university counseling centers in Japan do not utilize SNSs. This is due to Japanese counselors' attitudes toward using SNS. However, no research regarding this problem has been conducted in Japan. The present study investigated attitudes of Japanese university counselors toward using SNSs and factors that influenced these attitudes.
Methods:
An original questionnaire was sent to 749 university counseling centers in Japan. This questionnaire comprised items about the type of university installation, the size of the university, the number of counselors, the number and rate of students visiting the counseling centers, the number of counselors who can update websites, the degree of websites use, and the attitudes toward using SNSs.
Results:
In total, 305 counseling centers (40.7%) responded. Excluding the responses with missing values, the answers of 174 centers (23.2%) were included in final analysis. Factor analysis was conducted on items concerning attitudes toward using SNSs, and three factors were found. These were "using SNSs actively," "fear about risks of SNSs," and "anxiety about manipulation of SNSs."Three subscales were constructed from these factors and the scores of each subscale were calculated. The average scores of "using SNSs actively" were not particularly high while those of "fear about risks of SNSs" and "anxiety about manipulation of SNSs" were very high. Next, correlations between the scores of these three subscales, the number of counselors, the number and the rate of students visiting counseling centers, and scores of actively using websites were calculated.There were very few pairs found to be statistically significant, and many of the absolute values of correlations were small. However, there were statistically significant relations between the scores of these subscales (high score group or not) and the type of university installation, the size of university, and the existence of counselors who updated websites. Public universities showed active attitudes toward using SNSs, but private universities did not. National universities and universities that had counselors who could update websites had a tendency to have relatively lower "fear about risks of SNSs." These findings provide new insights into present situations and issues relating to university counseling centers in Japan.

本研究は，学生から見た学生相談機関のウェブサイトについて，基礎的知見を得ることを目的として行われた。大学生・大学院生528名を対象に質問紙調査を行った結果，次のような知見が得られた。インターネットを長時間利用する学生が多かったが，学生相談機関のウェブサイトを閲覧したことがある学生は非常に少なかった。しかし，「閲覧」と「場所」の理解および「利用」に関連が見られたこと，利用経験はないが閲覧したことはある学生が少なからず見られたことを考え合わせると，ガイダンス等の際に学生相談機関のウェブサイト閲覧の有用性をアピールすることには利用促進につながる可能性があると考えられた。
学生にとって必要であると感じられる情報には学生相談機関の利用と連絡方法に関する情報が多くあげられていた。一方で，相談室内の様子やSNSに対する必要性は小さかった。また，ウェブサイト上におけるSNSを通じた交流への関心は低く，困ったときに利用するための必要最低限の情報が得られることを期待していることがうかがえた。日本では，学生がSNSをよく利用しているにもかかわらず，学生相談機関にはSNSが求められていないことから，SNSを通じた様々な情報の提供は学生のニーズに馴染まないことが考えられた。

本研究は，学生相談機関を対象としてウェブサイトや電子メール等の活用状況を調査することにより，この点について示唆を得ることを目的として行われた。ウェブサイトの更新頻度からは学生相談機関としてのコミュニティ援助活動の体制が整備されている大学と未整備の大学に二極化している傾向がうかがえた。また，学生相談機関内にウェブサイトのメンテナンスが可能な人がいない場合が多く，ウェブサイトを通じた広報活動に力を入れている大学も多くはなかった。学生相談機関が主体的，積極的に学内外に情報を提供する状況にない大学が多いことが示唆された。また，利用に最低限必要な情報はかなり掲載されているものの，コミュニティを志向した情報提供は非常に少なく，この点に課題を抱えていると考えられた。
一方，学生相談機関側は自らのウェブサイトが比較的整備されていると感じているが，外部から閲覧されているという実感は少なく，この点にギャップが見られた。ウェブサイトを通じた情報発信の有効性を高めるためには，ガイダンス等を活用するなどして閲覧を増やすための工夫を行う必要がある。電子メールは教職員とのやりとりにはよく使われており，この点では学生相談活動の一環として定着しているものと思われた。一方で，SNSの利用については慎重な姿勢の大学がほとんどであった。今後，学生相談における活用の是非や有効性について検討する必要があると考えられた。

インターネット環境の整備やモバイル端末の急速な普及により，大学のウェブサイトが教育や研究に果たす役割は非常に大きくなった。大学は情報発信のためにウェブサイトを積極的に活用しており，学生も大学の様々な情報にアクセスしている。各大学の学生相談機関もウェブサイトを通じた情報発信を行っており，『学生相談機関ガイドライン』（日本学生相談学会,2013）の中でもその重要性が指摘されている。支援を必要とする学生はもちろんこと，家族，あるいは教職員も学生相談機関のウェブサイトを閲覧し，情報を入手しているものと思われる。しかし，学生相談機関としてウェブサイト上にどのような情報を掲載すべきなのか，また，利用促進につなげるにはどのような情報を掲載したらよいのか，あるいは，そもそも利用促進にどの程度効果があるのかといった問題についてはほとんどわかっていない。今回の自主シンポでは，2004年，2005年及び2013年に学生相談機関のウェブサイトを対象に行った調査の結果をもとに，ウェブサイトを利用した情報発信について話題提供を行いたい。まず，日本及びアメリカの学生相談機関における最近約10年間の情報発信の変化について取り上げ，次に，日本，アメリカ，イギリス，台湾の大学の学生相談機関の情報発信の現状について比較検討する。これらの知見に基づき，学生相談機関のウェブサイトを通じた情報発信の可能性について考えたい。

本研究は，アメリカの大学の学生相談機関におけるウェブサイトを通じた情報発信の変化について基礎的な知見を得るために行われた。
アメリカの学生相談機関の多くでは学生の来室にかかわる重要な情報がもれなく掲載されている傾向があり，全体的な情報量も増加傾向にあるものと思われる。2005年と比較して掲載率が高くなった情報を見ると，こうした重要な情報に加えて，大学コミュニティを意識したアプローチに関する情報が増えていると感じられた。
一方，総情報量においても，掲載される情報量は増加傾向にあり，大学規模が大きくなるほど情報量も多いことが見出された。すなわち，アメリカの学生相談機関は，近年の情報化社会の進展や必要とされるサービスの変化に対応する形で情報発信を充実，変化させており，その傾向は大学規模が大きくなるほど顕著である。
総じて，学生相談機関によるウェブサイトを通じた情報発信には，大学の人的・物的リソースの影響が大きいことが予想される。

アメリカ・イリノイ大学（アーバナ・シャンペーン校）における学生相談の現状について明らかにするために，学生相談機関のアシスタントディレクター及びクリニカルスタッフに面接調査を行った。その結果，イリノイ大学においては，アウトリーチやコンサルテーションなど，学生相談機関以外のリソースを活用して学生を援助していることが示された。

学習院大学学生相談室に過去３年間に来室した学生のうち，転部・転科相談のケース80名について，属性・対応の時期・経過の分類等を検討し，さらに特徴的な事例について検討した。それらの相談の中には転部・転科の相談をきっかけに，心理的な相談へ移行したものも少なくなく，転部・転科は最初に対外的に訴えやすい相談であることがあらためて明らかとなった。大学には入ったものの自らの所属意識がもてない学生が多くなっていることが指摘されており，今後，このような学生への対応の充実を図る必要があることが示唆された。

学生相談機関の相談件数について客観的なデータをもとに明らかにしようとした研究は少ない。そこで，学生相談機関の相談件数，相談回数，来談率と学生相談機関を取り巻く諸指標との間の関係を調べた。その結果，相談件数，相談回数についてはかなり学生数から予測できたが，来談率は全ての指標から予測が難しいという結果が得られた。これらの点から，学生相談機関の利用には，広報活動やイメージなど「ソフト」の面での要因が関わっている可能性を指摘した。

大学において中断されていた学生相談活動の再開過程をまとめ，その過程に伴って展開された学内におけるネットワークの形成について事例的に記述するとともに，再開という特殊な過程の特徴について考察した。その中で，再開過程において，大学自体が持っている様々な特性，中断前の学内における学生相談活動の位置づけなどが，再開後の相談活動の方向性に大きな影響力を及ぼしていることが明らかになった。

学生の学生生活への適応と性格との関係を明らかにするために大学生211人を対象に質問紙調査を行った。その結果、「学業適応感」、「友人関係適応感」とＴＥＧのいくつかの尺度との間に有意な相関が見られた。また、被験者の性格パターンごとに適応感を比較したところ、ある特定の性格パターンを持つ学生は「友人関係適応感」が極めて低いことが明らかになった。これらの結果から、特定の大学において不利に働いてしまう性格パターンがある可能性を指摘し、こうした学生への支援の必要性について述べた。

伊藤(1997)における尺度の妥当性を再検討した。124名の被験者を対象にして、他者に対して感じる恐怖感を記述する表現を自由記述させたところ、124個の表現が得られた。こられを伊藤(1997)における質問項目と比較検討したところ、両者ともほぼ同様な表現であることが明らかになった。このことから、作成された尺度の項目は他者に対して感じる恐怖感を網羅していると考えられ、尺度の妥当性が確認された。
