In this study, we took up the social norm regarding gender role division of labor, "husbands should work outside the home and wives should protect the home," and clarified its formation process by focusing on the persistence of the norm within individuals, and empirically examined whether the social norm can change in response to policy intervention.
Extending the original research plan in response to the spread of the new coronavirus from February 2020, we investigated and analyzed how the rapid expansion of remote work affected the division of household chores, and in turn, how this affected attitudes toward the gender role division of labor.

This study examines the effects of worker-financed training. We found that although participation in worker-financed training tends not to lead to any short-term increase in wages or job changes, it can lead to positive effects on a person's working life through improved job skills or job tasks, which suggests that it might have positive effects in the workplace in the long run.
This study also examined the effects of minimum wages on formal and informal firm-provided training and worker-initiated training in Japan. We found that the negative effect was observed on formal training, with a 1% increase in the minimum wage causing a 2.8% decline in the formal training of workers affected by minimum wage increases, no statistically significant decrease occurred with informal training. Further, we found that an increase in the minimum wage did not increase worker-initiated training.

This study examined the gender wage gap through the wage distribution in Japan. Although male and female wages have been converging, there still remains a persistent gender wage gap. To identify what impedes further reductions in this gap, we used Japanese data to conduct a decomposition across the wage distribution, focusing on the wage structure effect (the unexplained gap). We show that it is larger within an establishment than between establishments and at the tails of the wage distribution than in the middle, indicating that both a glass ceiling and a sticky floor exist within establishments and have for more than 25 years. The sticky floor appears to be largely caused by Japan's gendered career track job segregation system and the glass ceiling by a gender promotion gap and a "swimming upstream" phenomenon. Consequently, any further reduction in the gender wage gap will require a resolution of gender job segregation and a shift towards jobs that reward flexibility.
