本研究は、日本軍「慰安婦」制度について、軍隊と性売買・性暴力との関連の視点から、19世紀から20世紀の帝国主義諸国との国際比較をおこなうことによって、その世界史的な位置とその歴史的な意味を明らかにすることを目的としている。そのために日本・沖縄を含めて、比較対象とする国は、米国、英国、フランス、ドイツ、オランダなど欧米諸国と韓国である。
日本の場合、近代公娼制の展開から戦後の性売買の実態と政策のなかでこの問題を位置づける必要があるので、その史料調査を日本各地でおこない、史料を収集しつつある。特に元日本軍慰安婦が戦後に遺した日記や遊郭史料の分析を進めつつある。また韓国について、植民地時代ならびに戦後軍事政権下の性売買は日本軍と米軍と密接に関連しており、韓国での調査とともに韓国から研究者やこの問題に取り組んでいる民間団体のスタッフを招いての研究会もおこなった。
米国の国立公文書館、議会図書館、トルーマン大統領図書館、ニューヨーク公共図書館、南カリフォルニア大学図書館など米国各地で史料収集をおこなった。米軍ならびに米国政府・社会の性売買と軍との関連についての多くの史料を収集することができた。フランス軍と韓国軍の関連史料の収集に努め、重要と考えられる文献・史料の邦訳を進めてきた。邦訳作業は今後も継続していく予定である。
本共同研究の初年度として、史料調査、関連する研究文献の調査と邦訳（英語以外の諸外国語）に着手し、順調に研究は進展していると考えられる。 -

This research project has reappraised American history of Asian minorities through the lens of trans-Pacific perspective in which we conceptualized the Aisa-Pacific world as a historically multilayered structure of intersections between various Pacific-rim regions and in which we analyzed how the trans-Pacific power structures of Americas, East Asia, and Southeast Asia has shaped American minorities' historical experiences and their impacts on the mainstream American society.
We have uncovered in this project how Asian American minorities' experiences and identities and their influence on the American society has been determined by the history of Asia-Pacific world which has been shaped by cooperations, exchanges, and conflicts among Pacific empires such as the United States and the Japanese Empire. -

After four years of hard work, we are finally in the process of editing a co-authored book, the temporary title, People who seek Freedom and Liberation. This book is scheduled to publish in September. Its subtitle should be one of the three candidates, “A sketch of Contemporary America”, “The road to the Multicultural American Society” and “America by Race, Gender and Religion”. The manuscripts are all completed as well as the introduction by the editors.
There are three divisions of the book, firstly, three articles on black women activists, secondly, on Catholic, Jewish women activists, and homosexual activists, then thirdly, a historiographic treatise on the history of the civil rights movement by the advisor of this project. We sincerely hope this book will lead people to understand the not-so-simple nature of the social movements during the Civil Rights Era. -

The goal of this research is to (1) introduce transpacific perspective into US minority studies, (2) develop dialogues among minority studies in US and Japan, and (3) present the papers at the national and international conferences.

This project was able to achieve this goal from the following aspects. First, this project hosted meetings and international conference, and was able to develop the series of dialogues with the scholars of minority studies in Japan and US to discuss about the issues on minority studies and transpacific perspective. Second, the members conducted individual research and was able to provide empirical studies for the minority studies from transpacific perspective. Third, this project held a symposium in the final year to address the issue of this research agenda to the wider audience. The members also published their papers in Japanese, English and Korean and was able to provide the research result in Japan and outside of Japan. -

The purpose of our research was to conduct a comparative research on Japanese military 'comfort women' system and US policy to sexual trade and sexual violence. While we have made a collection of related documents from archives and libraries in the US and UK, we conducted workshops with researchers of several countries and made networks with them. By such academic activities we have enhanced our recognition of differences between Japanese and US cases.
At the same time, we have come to understand that the comparison between Japanese and US cases is insufficient in order to give the proper place to Japanese military ‘comfort women’ system in the world history and that it would be necessary to make an international comparison including European and Korean cases. -

報告者は、受入先機関の北海道大学図書館をはじめとする日本国内での資料収集を行い、また、2006年9月末から10月初めの3週間にかけてアメリカ合衆国の連邦議会図書館・インディアナ歴史協会資料室・シカゴ歴史協会資料室で19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけての黒人実業家・活動家・知識人らに関する未刊行史料を中心とした史料の調査・収集に従事した。こうした調査から、以下のような知見を得ることができた。
二〇世紀転換期の黒人実業家たちは、自らの経済活動が黒人コミュニティの富の蓄積に貢献するがゆえに黒人を「引き上げる」役割を果たしていることを誇っていた。またこうした富の蓄積を通じてアメリカ社会全体に資する存在であることを自任し、もって黒人の愛国主義を白人社会に向けて訴えることに執心していた。
しかしながら、こうした黒人実業家の愛国主義は国家・社会への貢献を強調するために、権利よりも義務を重視する言説を展開する傾向が強かった。この点を確認するために、黒人実業家たちはしばしば「インディアン」(アメリカ先住民)に否定的に言及する傾向があった。すなわち、連邦政府の保護を受けながら退廃するインディアンと自助努力によって向上する黒人の対比によって、黒人実業家は愛国的アメリカ市民にふさわしい存在としての自己表象を自他に認めさせようとしたといえる。また、南・東欧系移民の流入する時代にあって、「肌の色に関係ない」美徳や才能の尊重を呼びかける黒人実業家たちの能力主義的な言説は、しばしばネイティヴィズム(移民排斥主義)的色彩を帯びることになったのである。
ただし黒人リーダーが常に排外的傾向を持っていたとはいえない。とりわけ美容産業を中心とした黒人女性実業家は、経済的自立を背景にして政府の黒人政策を批判し、第一次世界大戦とその後の国際情勢の中で、非白人世界の植民地の独立や権利拡大を訴える活動を展開していたのである。 -
