This project examines the League of Nations International Committee of Intellectual Cooperation from the historical perspective that the committee was the predecessor of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Based on the scrutiny of documents stored in the Unesco archives, the League of Nations archives, French diplomatic archives, United Kingdom national archives, United States national archives, and Columbia University's Baker Library, the study reveals that the framework of the international intellectual cooperation used by Unesco originated with the creation of the committee, at a time when the French foreign ministry took a very active role. The study also demonstrates that there was a possibility that internationalists in Belgium might have created a totally different type of intellectual cooperation organization; that Inazo Nitobe took a very active role in the first years of the committee; and that Japan continued to participate in its activities throughout. The study suggests that further analysis of the conference of educational ministers held during World War II will be necessary for a more profound understanding of the historical meaning of international intellectual cooperation.

This project examines the development of human rights in the global historical context in order to demonstrate the process by which human rights came to be conceived of as a universal principle, even in the face of powerful criticism from many contrasting perspectives, for example cultural relativism. Focusing on the various challenges that the concept of human rights has encountered in the process of its evolution, this project reveals that the two decades between two world wars playd a vital part in the process of this evolution.

平成14年度は、最終年度として、文化接触・文化融合班は五年間の調査・研究の集大成となるべき成果公開にむけての針をたてることから出発した。一年後に出版予定の『太平洋世界の文化とアメリカ』は、この新領域の理論的枠組み形成、歴史的パースペクティヴ、将来への提言まで視野にいれ、ジェンダー、教育、文化変容と文学の各分野の研究を有機的に総合化することをめざすものとする。そのために研究分担者のお互いのテーマのみならず、他の班の研究との関連性も重視しなければならないだろう。
今年度教育関係では、Edward Beauchamp教授をお招きして、「21世紀の国際交流と短期留学」と題するセミナーをおこなった。お雇外国人研究者としても著争なボーシャン教授は、新しい文化交流ともいうべき、年齢も目的も多様な留学の可能性について提案された。
さらに、当班の活動をしめくくる意味で、公開シンポジウム「Transcending the Pacific-変容する文化風景と日米」を開催した。講師の吉原真理氏(University of Hawai'i)は"Embracing the East : White Women and American Orientalism"でアメリカ白人女性の東洋観を論じ、ジョゼフ・ヘニング氏(Prof. Joseph Henning, Saint Vincent College)は"Outposts of Civilization : Race, Raligion, and the Formative Years of American Japanese Relations"の中で、日米関係における人種と宗教といった新しい論点を提示した。コメンテイターは廣部泉氏(北海道大学)。多数の聴衆から活発な意見も出て刺激的な会であった。(司会 瀧田佳子、2003年2月3日、東京大学大学院総合文化研究科)
本年度は、これまで未知の分野であったアメリカとアジアを含む太平洋世界の文化について得た知見を検討しつつ、目標とした研究の完成に努力した。研究代表者と分担者全員が海外の様々な学会で発表したことも意義深いと思う。今後われわれの研究がこの地域の文化と相互理解に貢献できることを願っている。

昨年度に引き続き、19世紀前半のアメリカの他者認識、特にアジア太平洋地域に対する認識が現れている書物、記録を収集した。特に、当時アメリカ合衆国の中でもアジア太平洋地域に関心を抱いていた人々が比較的多く居住していたニューイングランド及びニューヨーク地方の商人によって、広東に代表される東アジアの貿易港へ派遣された商船の航海記録、彼らに対する資金提供者からの命令書、及び同地方に本部をおく宣教師団から派遣された宣教師と本部とのやり取りの記録を中心に精力的に収集した。それらを、東京大学付属アメリカ研究資料センター等の国内の研究機関所蔵のマイクロフィルム資料と合わせて、通読し、当時、アジア太平洋に関心を抱いていたアメリカ人が、どのような視覚で当該地域を見ていたのか、そのような見方が、どのように変化していったのか、また、イギリス人の抱いていたアジア太平洋認識といかに異なる「アメリカ的」認識を形作っていったかを中心に検討した。特に、通常の東廻りの航路をとった船と、あえて西廻りの太平洋経由の航路を選んだ船との視覚の違いに着目し、アメリカ独自の太平洋周りの航路をとった人々の記録を精読した。その結果、彼らがどのようなイメージをもって太平洋からアジアへと向かったのかが、アメリカ独自のアジアに対する他者認識を解く鍵になるという感触を得た。今後は研究の対象時期を拡大し、南北戦争を経て、アメリカが「国民化」を迎え、そして、アジア太平洋地域へと物理的に拡張していく時期である19世紀後半の、アメリカのアジア太平洋観について研究を継続したい。

What were the colonial days in the United States of America? They were often considered as a cradle of the modern America. That means the colonial days are the base for the most powerful country of the whole world for the last half century. As for Massachusetts Bay colony, it has been studied from a point of view of the relationship between Puritanism and theocracy.
We started from collecting the first-hand material, which we can't access to in Japan, and assessed, from the various points of view. It has led to affirmation of the need to reconsideration of traditional methodology of approach to the colonial period of the U.S. We also discussed and studied so-called 'Salem Witchcraft Trial', and got the conclusion that testimony by the accused were twisted by upper class whose representatives were ministers and judges. The conflict between upper class, and lower class which included most of people who were accused of as witches, reflected on the handling of evidences. But the accused had tried hard to invent a consistent 'story' which would help them survive the trial and eventually it became one of resources of American literature.
Modern writers have paid their concern to reexamination of authentic history of America, that is 'canon', and begun to reread the history and concluded that the history should base on ethnicity and multiculturalism. Analyzing their works, we have, to some degree, succeeded in clarifying the process of the birth of American literature.
