ビザンティン帝国の首都コンスタンティノポリスに現存する、ビザンティン後期の聖堂装飾は非常に限られている。むしろ帝国の外に、同時代の首都の美術の痕跡が多く残されている。ことにビザンティン帝国の北に位置する広大な地域において、ビザンティン美術の模倣が多く行われた。帝国の北とひとくくりに言ってもその広がりは大きく、文化的土壌が異なっていたために、同じビザンティンの図像体系を規範としながらも、各地の聖堂において、多様な装飾のバリエーションが生じた。
12世紀から13世紀にかけて、中世セルビア王国のネマニッチ王朝の王たちは、ビザンティン図像を装飾に取り入れ、こぞって聖堂を建立した。この時期の代表的な聖堂としては、ジュルジェヴィ ストゥポヴィ、ストゥデニツァ、ジツァ、ペーチ、ミレシェヴァ、プリドヴォリツァ、モラツァ、ダヴィドヴィツァ、ソポチャニ、グラダツ、アリリェがあげられる。
帝国の北の諸地域における聖堂装飾をテーマとした近年の事例研究としては、Trpcevskiによるストゥデニツァ修道院の王の聖堂のフレスコ、Bogojevicによるルデニツァ修道院の創建者の肖像、Sulloによるデチャニ修道院ナルテックスの家系図を表す図像の研究などがあげられる。加えて、Stevovicによるカレニッチ修道院、Temerinskiによるグラチャニツァ修道院、Rossiによるスタロ・ナゴリチノ修道院、Sinkevicによるデチャニ修道院パントクラトール聖堂の概観調査は、帝国の北における聖堂建築の様相を知るための貴重な基礎資料であり、それぞれが膨大な文献リストを伴うものである。今年度は主に、こうした文献資料の整理と精査に当たった。 -

This study is focused on the floor mosaic of Otranto Cathedral (1163-1165) in Apulia in southern Italy. The motif of a huge tree in the axis of the nave is conspicuous, with several scenes from the Old Testament distributed between its branches. In this study, all of the motifs in the nave and the transepts are carefully examined so as to clarify how they create an integral whole and convey their meaning. Some secular and mythological images, such as those of King Arthur, King Alexander, the zodiac signs and Siren were intertwined within the Old Testament iconography, and their significance is considered in relation to the biblical images. The most enigmatic depiction in the southern transept is deciphered in comparison with illuminations from the manuscripts of the apocalyptic commentary. In conclusion, it is argued in this study that the floor mosaic as a whole embodied the apocalyptic world view of early Medieval Christianity.

To examine the cross－cultural influences between Byzantine art and Western medieval art, our team conducted intensive field research in Paris, London, Siena, Parma, Fidenza, Florence, and Athens．Through painstaking comparative work, we were able to identify new iconographical and stylistic characteristics in illuminated manuscripts, frescos, bas－reliefs, and ivory sculptures.
