  • The Anarchist Movement of the Russian Jewish Immigrants: Experience of Migration as an Important Factor to Form the Social Thought and Movement Reviewed

    Hikaru Tanaka

    104   25 - 53   2020.4

     More details

Authorship:Lead author   Language:Japanese   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

This paper proposes the hypothesis that the experience of migration is an
important factor in making an individual an anarchist. Some scholars have advocated
that anarchism emerged in some of the least industrialized countries, such as Russia,
Spain, and Italy. However, there were also people who became anarchists after their
immigration from non-industrialized to more industrialized countries. Some studies
have stated that the social situation of the countries to which they migrated made them
anarchists. However, this does not explain why some immigrants became anarchists,
and others became social democrats, communists, or nationalists. Their motives to
choose anarchism could be constructed through various experiences, not only after they immigrated, but also before they even decided to leave their country. Supposing the impact of these experiences on their decision to become anarchists, this paper will
examine the experiences of some Jewish people who became anarchists after they
immigrated from Russia to the United States at the end of the 19th century until the eve
of World War I. After analyzing their experiences, I deduce some of the factors that
    might have possibly made them anarchists: the free and private gathering space;
encounters with the various people whom they could meet only in United States, but not
in Russia, conversations with them in everyday life; encounters with other attractive
anarchists; and their recognition of the similarity of oppression faced in the United
States and Russia, by comparing the harsh persecution against anarchists in the land of “freedom” and “democracy” with the land of tyranny. Then, I analyze their personal
memories of the time period in Russia before their immigration. There were some
Jewish women and men who immigrated to escape from their traditional Jewish
marriages or family constraints, which they called “prison” or “hell”; there were also
some men who quit their religious education because they could never believe in
Judaism. On acquiring such an antiauthoritarian mindset, they found anarchism to be
the best school of movement in the United States. This also explains why they could
actively participate in events like the “Yom Kippur Ball”, which was organized by
Jewish immigrant anarchists in order to denounce the religion in general. Thus, by
examining their memories and the Jewish anarchist movement, I propose my hypothesis that their experiences during the process of migration from Russia to the United States were the factors that made these individuals anarchists.

The ‘High Treason Incident’ rocked Japanese society between 1910 and 1911, when police discovered that a group of anarchists and socialists were plotting to assassinate the Emperor Meiji. Following a trial held in camera, twelve of the so-called conspirators were hanged, but while the executions officially brought an end to the incident, they were only the initial outcome as the state became increasingly paranoid about national ideological cohesion. In response it deployed an array of new technologies of integration and surveillance, and the subsequent repression affected not only political movements, but the whole cultural sphere.

This book shows the far reaching impact of the high treason incident for Japanese politics and society, and the subsequent course of Japanese history. Taking an interdisciplinary and global approach, it demonstrates how the incident transformed modern Japan in numerous and unexpected ways, and sheds light on the response of authoritarian states to radical democratic opposition movements elsewhere. The contributors examine the effects of the incident on Japanese history, literature, politics and society, as well as its points of intersection with broader questions of anarchism, colonialism, gender and governmentality, to underline its historical and contemporary significance.

With chapters by leading Western and Japanese scholars, and drawing on newly available primary sources, this book is a timely and relevant study that will be of great interest to students and scholars working in the fields of Japanese history, Japanese politics, Japanese studies, as well as those interested in the history of social movements.

By observing the characteristics of Japanese culture from various social sciences such as sociology, cultural anthropology, politics, history, and area studies, we decided to capture this relatively and universally. However, at that time, we put the focus point on the social movement. We studied how Japanese social movements can be grasped when viewed from their respective disciplines. Through joint research, we discovered that we can have an amorphous state recognition as a common viewpoint, and positioned Japanese culture from this viewpoint.

This research focuses on the European female migrations between 17th century and the first half of 20th century and seeks to analyse reciprocal relations between migrations and the gender. By making the case studies of female migrations from the point of view of the women's participation to political and social movements, their entry into the labor market, and the influence of their migration on the patriarchy in the private sphere, it concluded that the marriage and matrimonial strategy were important factors for the migration practice, that the preservation (or formation) of personal asset provoked it, and that after the migration, the augmentation of occasions of female work outside the family weakened the patriarchal control on family members.

In East Asia, dialogues among nations are frequently interrupted by seemingly insurmountable disputes over history and attempts at historical reconciliation are generally evaluated as a “failure”. In East Asia, the promotion of historical reconciliation presents two specific difficulties. While people in Europe have problematized historical reconciliation as issues of war responsibilities, people in East Asia are more attentive to the issues of colonial responsibilities. Also, people in East Asia experienced the process of democratization and hyper-economic development differently in terms of their chronologies and political implications. As a result, people in East Asia can promote historical reconciliation more effectively by paying more attention to the historical specificities in East Asia in terms of colonialism, democratization, and economic development, as well as by critically reviewing the current theoretical framework of international law.

This project attempted to analyze the logic of European migration between 17th century and the first half of 20th century, focusing on the various types of migration (internal migration / intra-european migration / intercontinental migration, economic migration / political exile / refugees etc.) and recognizing the migrants as actors who chose to migrate.
By accumulating the individual cases about the European migrants and putting insistingly these cases into the types of the logic of migration, it reached to the conclusion that it is very important to distinguish circular (temporary) migrations from linear (permanent) migrations, and it is necessary to emphasize the crucial role of feminine migrants.

We could throw light on how they built up(or broke off)“transnational"relations in their communities and groups and, accordingly, how they established(or lost)“transnational identities,"which was the pioneering research in this field in Japan.

The purpose of this project is to consider the role of "democracy" thought in the Taisho period socially, examining how the attitudes and thoughts of liberals and socialists toward "democracy" developed.
1.Socialists' opinions and thoughts about "social democracy"
The origin of Japanese socialists' ideas of "social democracy" is in the movement of the Social Democratic Party established in 1901 and the Heiminsha that succeeded its movement. We propound the monographs on ABE Isoo who wrote the manifesto of the Social Democratic Party, and on SAKAI Toshihiko and KOTOKU Shusui who founded the Heiminsha, and on the editor of the Heimin Shinbun, ISHIKAWA Sanshiro. And also the monograph that demonstrates Osugi Sakae's concern with Comintern and the Anarchist International Conference. Osugi was a Heiminsha 's working mate and an anarchist in Taisho period.
2.Liberals' opinions and thoughts about "social democracy"
The movement of "democracy" in Taisho period has its origins in the socialist movement in Meiji period. What YOSHINO Sakuzo said about himself, "the moral successor of the Social Democratic Party," illustrates the link. In this chapter, we examine two person. First we try to give clear picture of UEHARA Etsujiro who criticized the Yoshino's idea of "democracy" and advocated "democracy" thought from the viewpoint of sovereignty. And we argue the OSATAKE Takeki's thoughts who studied the history of Japanese constitutions under the influence of YOSHINO.
    3. Point of View toward "Social Democracy"
After the collapse of Soviet Communism, the interest to "Social Democracy" has arisen. Concerning this situation, we examine what anarchism has advocated, what "welfare sate" has bring, and what radical "democracy" arguments that was advanced by MARUYAMA Masao and FUJITA Shozo in post-war period has meant.
Head investigator and the investigators are the member of the Association for Early Japanese Socialism Studies that was founded 1983. The association's bulletin Early Japanese Socialism Studies was a main announcement place.
