    Novel PdO/La10Si6-xCoxO27-delta/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts with applications to methane combustion were developed. These materials were based on the use of La10Si6-xCoxO27-delta as a promoter because this compound has an oxide-ion conducting apatite-type structure that allows the smooth migration of active oxygen to the PdO activator. Co3+/2+ ions were also introduced into the original La10Si6O27 lattice to enhance its redox properties. Temperature-programmed reduction measurements revealed that the oxygen supply was facilitated by introducing Co3+/2+, where the reduction was observed at 290 degrees C for La10Si6-xCoxO27-delta (x = 1.0), whereas no reduction was observed below 460 degrees C for La10Si6O27. Among the samples synthesized in this work, PdO/La10Si6-xCoxO27-delta/gamma-Al2O3 (x = 1.0) exhibited the highest catal degrees C required when employing PdO/La10Si6O27/gamma-Al2O3.

    A Pt/CeO2-ZrO2-SnO2/SBA-16 (SBA-16: Santa Barbara Amorphous No. 16) catalyst was developed for the efficient removal of 1,4-dioxane. Because the catalyst showed synergistic action between the high catalytic activity of Pt and the high oxygen release and storage abilities of CeO2-ZrO2-SnO2, high catalytic efficiency in the liquid phase was obtained in an air atmosphere without the supply of any strongly oxidizing additives or photoirradiation. After reaction at 80 degrees C for 4 h, the residual percentage of 1,4-dioxane reached 31%. Furthermore, the Pt/CeO2-ZrO2-SnO2/SBA-16 catalyst exhibited high reusability and durability and the rate of net decrease in 1,4-dioxane reached 44% at 80 degrees C.

    Novel oxidation catalysts were prepared by artificial control of oxide ion and electron migration property in the solid. Smooth oxide ion conduction and the high redox property increased the oxygen release and storage abilities, which facilitated the catalytic oxidation. Oxide ion conducting property was controlled by selecting the crystal structure suitable for oxide ion migration and introducing oxide ion vacancies in the lattice. Electron conductivity (redox property) was provided by doping ions which can change their valence state. As results, the Pt/La10Si5CoO27-δ/γ-Al2O3 catalyst can completely oxidize toluene in gas-phase at 120℃, and the Pt/CeO2-ZrO2-SnO2/ZrO2/SBA-16 catalyst can completely remove phenol in liquid-phase under the moderate conditions at 80℃ under the atmospheric open-air system. Furthermore, glycerol can be oxidized to value-added compounds by using the CeO2-ZrO2-based systems.

    In order to effectively remove nitrous oxide (N2O) which causes the global warming and the ozone layer depletion, I developed the novel catalysts for the direct N2O decomposition. I focused on Yb2O3 with the cubic C-type rare earth sesquioxide structure, which has the large open spaces in the lattice. In addition, Co2+/3+ or Cu+/2+ was introduced into the lattice to accelerate the decomposition reaction by supplying the lattice oxygen. As results, (Yb0.85Cu0.15)2O3-δshowed the highest activity, and decomposed N2O at the temperature as low as 400℃. Furthermore, I also demonstrated that the open space in the C-type structure worked as the N2O adsorption sites and the catalytic active sites.

    From the viewpoint of the oxide ion conduction in solids, I synthesized novel environmental catalysts. For the CeO2-ZrO2 solid, the Ce4+ and Zr4+ sites were replaced by lower-valence Fe2+/3+, Ni2+/3+, or Bi3+ to increase the oxide ion conductivity caused by the formation of oxygen vacancies. By using these samples as promoters with Pd or Pt, I prepared the novel catalysts, which can completely oxidize methane at 280 degree C, toluene at 100 degree C, and formaldehyde at 20 degree C. In addition, I also demonstrated that the oxide ion conducting solid with apatite-type structure (La10Si6O27) worked as promoters for methane or VOCs oxidation.

    In this study, we have developed the divalent cation conducting solid electrolytes, (Hf1-xMx)4/(4-x)Nb(PO4)3 (M = divalent cations), showing high ion conductivity by strictly selecting the well-ordered three-dimensional network structure of NASICON type structure. As the conducting cation species (M), we focused on Mg2+ and Ca2+ and Zn2+, which have relatively small ionic size and low electronegativity among the divalent cations that should realize smooth ion migration even in rigid crystal lattice. All the solid electrolytes developed showed extraordinary high divalent M2+ ion conductivity compared with those for the solids which have been reported, and their ion conducting properties were clearly demonstrated by the dc and ac conductivity measurement in various atmosphere whose oxygen partial pressure is widely varied, and dc electrolysis method. Furthermore, the quantitative M2+ migration in each solid has also been demonstrated by modified Tubandt electrolysis method.
