Parliamentary debate is a widely utilized pedagogical practice in secondary school English classes in Japan. This paper presents debate-based activities and proposes methods for assessing students’ outcomes following these activities. While previous research has addressed debate-based activities, such as pair debates, they often lack a focus on assessment and feedback. This paper specifically explores the summary and comment activity, providing a framework for conducting performance tests. Key factors for successful implementation include a step-by-step approach, clear communication of detailed assessment criteria, and encouraging post-performance self-reflection. The paper concludes with suggestions for novice debate instructors seeking to deepen their understanding of debate pedagogy.

論理・表現が導入されて以降、英語ディベートが高校授業で取り扱われるようになっている。教科書でもディベートにページが割かれ、多くの生徒が一度は経験する活動となっている。ディベートは準備時間の長短で準備型か即興型に分かれる。授業時間だけでは数か月単位の準備は難しいので、即興型を模したディベート活動が主流であると考えられる。本発表は二部構成である。前半は、高校2年生に即興型英語ディベートを導入した際のカリキュラムと課題である。授業時間10コマを用いて、立論スピーチ練習からチーム対戦まで行った。活動後に個別・全体のフィードバックをし、ライティングテストで評価としたが、ディベート本来のモードであるスピーキングテストが行えなかった点が課題として残った。後半は、上記指導の改善版で、対戦をゴールとしない取り組みについてである。ディベート指導となると対戦がゴールになることが多いが、本取り組みでは立論・サマリーをベースに様々な活動を行った。また、教科書本文の内容を活かしてディベートの型に落とし込む指導をした。その結果、生徒は教科書内容について意見するためにディベートの型を使えるようになり、対戦がゴールであった前指導とは違う成果が得られた。スピーキングテストを評価とし、1時間でクラス全員に評価を与えた。事前に評価規準をルーブリックで示し、波及効果を高める工夫をした。一人一台端末の今では多様な評価方法も可能であると考え、その点については大会参加者の方と意見交換したい。本発表は教科書内容をベースとしたディベート的活動についてであり、レッスンのファイナルタスクとしてスピーキング活動を想定する先生方にとって、実践のヒントとなることを期待している。

This presentation aims to address two primary points: an analysis of AI usage in Japanese classrooms and the author’s own classroom practices involving ChatGPT. To explore the first point, articles on a magazine, Eigo Kyoiku, English Education in Japanese, regarding AI use in class were reviewed and categorized into four groups. The second part of the presentation will focus on how students can leverage AI to enhance their vocabulary rather than merely improving the grammatical accuracy of their English compositions. It has been observed that many students and teachers prioritize grammatical accuracy over vocabulary development in English writing. The presentation will demonstrate how students at different proficiency levels can use ChatGPT to expand their vocabulary. Additionally, the presentation will discuss how to structure the curriculum and achieve lesson objectives both with and without the use of AI.

本発表では検定教科書Crown English Expression Ⅱを用いた英語表現Ⅱの授業をもとに、本校生徒が効果的に学んだ部分と、追加で発展的に学び深めなければいけない部分について、パラグラフライティングとディスカッションを例に紹介する。300語のエッセイライティングではエッセイに不可欠なthesis statement や一貫性といった概念(大井・田畑・松井, 2008)、Chat GPTを用いた語彙レベル向上について指導した。検定教科書は主に1パラグラフ単位の作品を念頭に説明・例示されており、5パラグラフエッセイを代表とするエッセイライティングは追加で指導する必要がある。本発表の取り組みではIELTSのライティングセクションタスク2を例にエッセイライティングを行った。授業内やサンプル問題解答後のフィードバックを与え、I have two reasons.のような単文では終わらない、より具体的なthesis statementが書けるよう改善を促した。使用する語彙レベルを日常的なものからアカデミックなものに上げるために、Chat GPTへのプロンプトを紹介し、例を共有した。
　検定教科書にあるディスカッションでは、多角的な視点から議論が例示され、他生徒とのインタラクションを通じて考えを広げ深める意義付けがされている。指導内容を発展させるため、議論のための準備と結論付けの方法について発展的学習を行った。具体的にはstakeholder analysis によるブレインストーミングの方法とPMT (Probability Magnitude Timeframe) analysisによるインパクトの測定である。前者の導入により、準備時間に行う個々のブレインストーミングがより効果的・効率的なものになった。検定教科書ではグループとしての結論を多数決で行うと推測されるような場面があったが、発展的指導として、その方策を用いた場合どのような効果・デメリットが発生するかを予測するための後者のインパクト測定方法を紹介し、チームの意見をまとめる手助けとした。

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of learning diary in a university’s voluntary English-speaking session. The learning diary system, which is sometimes called reflective journal, is frequently viewed as a practical and effective tool to assess, diagnose, and monitor students’ learning especially in tertiary education. The participants were seven students who applied to an extra-curricular English-speaking session at university. Keeping a diary helped them reflect on how they felt and what they learned in the session and connect their learning to their past and future experiences. The paper concludes by offering suggestions for instructions and future research.
