    Metal hydride is one of promising hydrogen storage materials to realize on-board hydrogen storage for fuel cell vehicle and large-scale stationary hydrogen storage system. This paper introduces fundamental properties and advantages of the metal hydrides. Background of research and development of the materials each for on-board and stationary hydrogen storage are described. In addition, recent progress of the research and development on three types of the material is reviewed: Ti- or V-based solid-solution alloys with body-centered cubic (BCC) structure have been developed for a hybrid hydrogen storage tank in fuel cell vehicle. Mg-based materials have been studied and utilized for stationary hydrogen storage systems. Alloys with stacking structure have potential as both negative electrodes for Ni-MH batteries and hydrogen storage materials.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the potential of B2-type intermetallic compounds as low-temperature-operated hydrogen permeable membranes, and to obtain guidelines for the development of low-temperature-operated hydrogen permeable alloys based on the obtained knowledge.
    We investigated the effect of excess Cu on the hydrogen permeability of PdCu alloys and found an alloy that exhibits high hydrogen permeability at low temperatures around 200°C. Although excess Cu affects hydrogen dissolution and diffusion, the hydrogen permeability is greatly reduced at room temperature due to hydrogen trapping effects apart from the excess Cu atoms.

    Mg based hydrides are attractive hydrogen energy materials because of their relative high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen storage capacities combined with low material costs. However, most of them are too stable to release the hydrogen under moderate conditions. Here we synthesize the hydride of Mg2FexSi1-x which consists of Mg2FeH6 and Mg2Si with the same cubic structure. For Si-rich hydrides (x < 0.5), Mg2FeH6 domains are nanometer-sized and embedded in a Mg2Si matrix. This synthesized metallographic structure leads to a distortion of the Mg2FeH6 lattice, resulting in the thermal destabilization. Our results indicate that nanometer-sized Mg based transition metal hydrides can be formed by the hydrogenation of nonequilibrium Mg-Fe-Si composites. In this way, the thermodynamics of hydrogen absorption and desorption can be tuned which allows for the development of light-weight and inexpensive hydrogen storage materials.

    Mg hydride which has the high volumetric density of hydrogen is an attractive option to store energy because of its light weight and low material costs. However, the Mg-H system has thermodynamic and kinetic limitations associated with hydrogen absorption and desorption processes: the high stability of the MgH2 phase and the slow diffusion of hydrogen in Mg and MgH2 at moderate temperatures and pressures. Nanometer-sized Mg hydride clusters may form in a self-organized way by the hydrogenation of a non-equilibrium Mg-Ti alloy. In this study we have synthesized Mg-Ti-X (X: Cr, Mn) and Mg-Fe-Si hydrides and the Mg hydride is destabilized by the interface energy.

    We investigated the novel technological development of human-friendly compact actuators with several unique properties, including a high power-to-weight ratio, softness, noiselessness, and no requirement of an electric power supply, which strengthen the technologies for enhanced quality-of-life for home care support or disaster prevention of vulnerable elderly people or people with physical disabilities. Our integrated and multidisciplinary study of the human-friendly actuators was also conducted in parallel with the development of new functional materials, specifically, metal hydride materials, for use in a small pressure generator unit and its peripheral technology, and measurements of human movement and performance, which constitute the ergonomic analysis for human-centered design of home care equipment or portable rescue tools. Finally, we developed a prototype human-friendly compact soft actuator system by using the metal hydride materials.

    V based alloys are one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials. However, low production cost is necessary for practical use. In this work, in order to substitute V by ferrovanadium, the effect of impurity elements in ferrovanadium on the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation properties has been studied. It has been elucidated that Fe and oxygen in V reduce the hydrogen storage capacity and suppress the diffusion of hydrogen in the V hydride phase. Ferrovanadium is commercially produced from V oxide using the thermite (Goldschmidt) reaction with Al. Therefore, reduction of the oxygen content in V by increasing the Al content and adjustment of the Fe content depending on the raw material cost have been suggested from the results.
