    <p>When firms shifts its production base overseas, first-tier suppliers shift with it, and it utilizes local suppliers for supplemental use. In general, when evaluating the local content, we use the first-tier local content. However, when observing carefully the production of each component, many of the components manufactured by local suppliers are composed of imported parts and materials. In the value-added terms, the first-tier local content is an overestimation of the actual value added by local suppliers. In the example of a Japanese automobile manufacturer in Thailand in 2007, the apparent local content was 90 percent, though the real local content measured in value added was 60 percent. However, Japanese Manufacturing Model has been changing these several years. Reliance on imports from Japan for parts and materials is a cost-disadvantage for Japanese manufacturers when facing competition in the local market. Manufacturers need to decrease the amount of value-added by Japanese companies and achieve an actual localization, which should lead to reduced cost. We call such phenomenon the "real localization" as opposed to the apparent localization. Lastly, we will discuss about the impact of real localization in overseas on Japanese domestic manufacturing, especially on Japanese suppliers.</p>

    <p>Offshore production of Japanese companies has been steadily developed. This series discuss about the impact of offshore production on domestic manufacturing, relationship between domestic mother factories and offshore factories, developing global production network, and long and complex global supply chain based on empirical data. The first of the series discuss about the development of offshore production and its impact on domestic manufacturing. We explain that both offshore production and export had increased in the 2000s. Offshore production and export have an complementary relationship, not substitutive.</p>

    During the past few decades, Japanese electric and electronics companies have been struggling to compete against lower-priced rivals from South Korea and China. As a result, they lost international market share. However, are Japanese genbas really losing their competitiveness? This paper investigates 1) does Japanese genba maintains competitiveness and how? 2) If so, what are the characteristics of those organizations? And 3) what are the factors that are critical for Japanese genba to maintain competitiveness in the future. Interviews with eight successful Japanese electric and electronics companies and survey with 97 business units were conducted. The findings show that Japanese electric and electronics companies are maintaining their competitiveness at the genba level. Data shows that most of them maintain higher levels of performance than their overseas counterparts except for cost. Some common aspects of those companies are 1) shifting their business transaction from "B to C" to "B to B"; and 2) gathering functions such as product development and production engineering at the Japanese factory. In addition, three factors; "perspective", "communication between top management and genba" and "visualization" together enhance capabilities at the genba.

    First, we indicate that Japanese manufacturers have increased both offshore production and exports from Japan during the 1990s to the 2000s. Offshore production and exports are not a substitute relationship but a complementary relationship for Japanese manufacturers. Japanese offshore production is strongly supported by industrial goods imported from Japan such as machine tools, materials and components. Second, we insist that there is a big gap between the nominal local procurement rate of finished goods and the real local procurement rate based on value added analysis including the local content of local suppliers. Finally, we analyze the impact of the increase in real local procurement rate. The value added amount of the Japanese production depends not only on the real local procurement rate in offshore production but also on the overseas sales amount of Japanese firms.

    Christensen and Bower (1996) and Christensen (1997, 2003) discuss disruptive innovation by applying Dosis concept of <i>disruptive technological trajectories</i> (Dosi, 1982). In the studies on performance of hard disk drives, Christensen uses and re-uses "a reprinted graph," in which time and performance are on the horizontal and vertical axes. However, careful examination of different publications shows a varying shape and vertical axis, raising doubts about its reliability. In fact, whether the technological trajectories look disruptive or sustaining depends on the unit on the vertical axis. To present the nature of technological trajectories, it would appear more appropriate to set the vertical axis to volumetric recording density for hard disk drives. Moreover, the technological trajectories of hard disk drives would not be disruptive, if the vertical axis was adjusted to reflect weights of hard disk drives or amounts of their electricity use. It is conceivable that Christensen came to this conclusion that the technological trajectories are disruptive before considering a more appropriate performance measure for them.

    International standardization has become a strategic tool for global firms since new industrial policies emerged in developed countries in the 1980s, which allow firms to easily form a consortium to set industry-wide standards. This standardization has created many <i>consensus standards</i> that change the distribution of added value internationally, and has induced transformation in the international division of labor among the developed and developing countries. Platform business is most eminent in the resulting business ecosystem. It harnesses consensus standards to earn global competitive advantages, based on two practices: adjusting the scope of their knowledge and selecting new business partners who adopt the standards.

    A discontinuous technological innovation destroy the existing technological systems and alter the regular competitive balance even in a stable mature industry. In the color TV set industry, a discontinuous technological change from vacuum tubes to transistors and ICs was observed in the 1970s.     Competitive advantage of Japanese firms and of catch-up countries firms has been discussed through the case study on optical storage products. The dynamic change of product architecture from integral to modular mode has brought out the latent potential of catch-up countries. The more modular the architecture is, the larger the market shares of catch-up countries firms and the smaller the market share of Japanese firms are. The analysis shows that the competitive advantage/disadvantage of the catch-up countries firms depends not on the direct labor cost but on the overhead cost, in which the patent royalty accounts for the most portions. Based on the contrastive position in the product architecture and in the patent royalty, authors propose that Japan and the catch-up countries promote the architecture-based global alliance for symbiotic co-prosperity, in which the power of integral architecture and of modular architecture are combined into one joint venture company.
