本研究の目的は、ロバート・ボイル(1627-1691)の著作や科学的営為を詳細に考察することを通じて、ボイルがゲーテ色彩論の方法論、あるいは科学性そのものにどのような影響を及ぼしているのかを見定め、それが内包する意義を捉えることにある。ゲーテは、自身の『色彩論について』の中で、ボイルを色彩研究の先駆者と位置付けている。なぜゲーテがボイルを高く評価したのかは、これまでゲーテ研究においてほとんど明らかにされてこなかった。これまでの研究では、ボイルではなく、ニュートンを対立軸にゲーテの特徴づけと近代科学との関係性が考察されてきた。本研究ではニュートンではなく、今までほとんど顧みられなかったボイルを通じて、そうした考察を行う点に独自性がある。
初年度は、ボイルの色彩研究だけではなく、化学研究や自然哲学的な考察など読み解き、ボイルの全体像をつかもうとした。Rose-Mary SargentのThe Diffident NaturalistやMichael HunterによるRobert Boyle reconsideredなどを通覧し、ガリレイやフランシス・ベーコンなどの影響を受けながら、ボイルが自身の自然哲学を打ち立てていく過程を吟味した。特に、ボイルがベーコン主義者であるとの研究が多数あるものの、近年ではそれを否定する研究結果も現れており、ボイルによるベーコンに関する記述を批判的かつ精密に考察した。特に、ボイルやベーコンを単なる経験主義の文脈からだけではなく、実験主義の文脈からも考察することが重要であると認識することができた。
