In this paper I discuss the introduction of project-based learning (PBL) in a first-year, content-based, global issues class at a Japanese university using a five-stage framework proposed by Stoller and Myers (2020). To illustrate how the framework was used, a detailed description of the processes my students engaged in during each stage is discussed followed by the results of two questionnaires completed by students. Connections between PBL and autonomous learning are highlighted. Scaffolding ideas provided for the class as well as ideas for improving the class are also suggested throughout the paper. I conclude with possible avenues for future research. It is my intention that in sharing my own, and my students’ experiences, that this paper can be a practical guide for teachers looking for ideas for implementing PBL in their classrooms.

In this paper I discuss the introduction of collaborative learning logs in a first-year, content-based, global issues class at a Japanese university. The rationale behind this activity and its connection to autonomous and sociocultural learning is briefly explained, taking the work of Shih (2020) as a starting point. Students’ responses to two questionnaires on their attitudes towards the activity are examined. The responses suggest that students generally found the activity to be beneficial to them. Specifically, they felt that it improved their ability to communicate ideas in English and developed their writing skills. Students also commented on the benefits of being able to collaboratively share reflections and ideas about their learning as well as some drawbacks associated with the activity. The paper concludes with ways to improve the activity and suggestions for future research.

Making notes is a common activity for students to engage in, yet research shows that instruction on making efficient notes is not widely taught. This paper will discuss various concepts and suggest some simple activities that teachers can use in order to facilitate more effective note-taking amongst their students, which may potentially lead to more robust learning. This includes activities on organizing hand-written notes. Also, strategies that encourage the personalization of, as well as active engagement with notes will be covered. Finally, the paper introduces an individual learning log, which has benefits both in online, and in face-to-face classes. Using the log, students are able to actively engage with their notes through writing activities, as well as build their knowledge collaboratively through pair and small group discussions, centered around their notes.
