The principal investigator, subcontractors, and collaborators worked to develop this research by conducting field surveys once or twice a year while holding study groups in Japan. Four international workshops and symposiums on economic integration and development, commons and integration of humanities and sciences, migration, and rural areas and human mobility were held to disseminate research findings to the world. The major research achievements include "Linking the Local and the World" (Iwanami Shoten, 2020), which focuses on international NGOs, global organizations, and wide-area relationships and existence that are connected beyond national frameworks; From Mekong Commons to Mekong Community (Routledge, 2021), which focuses on the humanities and sciences with the commons as a keyword.

The aim of this project is to analyze intellectual and organizational dynamics of the Islamist movements in the post-Arab Spring Middle East and to establish a new analytical framework of their political outcomes through empirical case studies of the Muslim Brotherhoods and its offshoots. The project attempted first to explore causes that led to different political outcomes of the Islamist movements in the context of "democratization" and "security" and then to generalize and conceptualize its causal effects with special reference to social science theories such as the social movement theory. As a result, the political outcomes of the Islamist movements can be categorized into "organizational changes" and "political and social changes caused by them." However, these two are virtually intertwined; the project concludes that interdisciplinary approach based on the two with combination of "what" and "why" questions over the Islamist movements.

In the post Arab Spring Middle East, due to the on-going conflicts in Syria and some other countries as well as the growing instability in the Middle East, the conflicts involved not only different religous and sectarian gropus. Under these circumstances, the conflicts have emerged and prevailed among Muslims. Middle Eastern states have now faced serious challenges in securing state security and people's peaceful and sustainbale livelihood and development. Completely innovative ways of peacebuilding and development assistance should be substantially constructed.

The main objective of this project is to clarify the arms trade and military relations between the DPRK (North Korea) and African countries which continues despite the United Nations Security Council sanctions.
We identified African countries that have good relationships with North Korea in the record of the Agency for National Security Planning of South Korea. We have conducted extensive research on the theme, reading through the official documents, past newspaper articles and implemented interviews in African countries and South Korea.
As a result of our research, we found out that military cooperation still exists between North Korea and some African countries. These findings were not only reported to the UNSC Sanctions Committee, but published in books, research papers and articles, and also broadcasted on television and radio. We are convinced that this project contributed in uncovering the truth of expanding military cooperation between North Korea and African countries. -

New phenomena of civil-military relation is now highlighted since Arab Springs in 2011. Military relation with the civil society plays a crucial role in designating military behavior in the recent cases of military intervention in politics. Cases in Thailand and in Egypt show the military intervention as a result of‘listening to the voices’from the street; but which voices does it listen to? Which civil society influences the behavior of military? Another phenomenon we witness is erosion of the legitimacy of state as‘the source of legitimate physical force', which authorizes national army to use force. Now prevalence of para-military complicates the state-military-civil society relations. Should we consider para-military as a part of politicised military power, or counterbalance to national army?
Answering the questions raised, we published a book titled‘Military, State and Civil Society in the Developing Countries', taking cases of the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and so on. -

We conducted a series of case studies of socio-political changes caused by the Arab Revolutions since January 2011, by focusing on important issues such as political reform through the revision of constitution, repression of the popular movements and outbreak of civil war, the refugee problem, and others. The impact of the Arab Revolutions to the Palestinian Question and the structure of the Middle Eastern regional politics are also other important topics in this study. We collected research documents on the above mentioned issues and constructed a tentative data-base of Arab political news.

The aim of our study project is to explore the political ideologies and activities of the Muslim Brotherhoods in Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Palestine and Algeria and their international networks by field researches and analyses of Arabic primary sources. Referring to the political rises and declines of the MBs after the 'Arab Spring,' we made empirical studies and demonstrated that they tried to maintain the cooperative relations while each MB kept its own independence.

This study examines the effects that the pro-democracy movements that began in 2011 in various Arab states are having on non-Arab Muslim societies, specifically examining the following: (1) Egypt, which became the core of the pro-democracy movements; (2) Turkey, which set a precedent in implementing democratic reforms; (3) Iran and Afghanistan, where democratization and structural reform are of key significance in terms of security; (4) Indonesia, which has the highest Muslim population in the world; and (5) Muslim migrant societies in Western Europe, which keep a keen watch on the democratization of their home countries. Accordingly, along with the retrogressive trend now manifesting in Turkey’s democratization and the rise of Islamic State (IS, also referred to as ISIS and ISIL) seen in the latter stages of the research period, it is evident that the order of the territorial nation states of the Middle East is currently being shaken to its very foundations.

A Study of the Lives and Works of the Matveevs : A Case of Literature in Exile, Margin, and Diaspora

In 2005, in continuation of the work done in 2004, I gathered the research material A trip to Vladivostok, Russian Federation in August and a visit to the Rare Book Collection of Far Eastern State University, Far Eastern State Archive, the Library of the Research Society of the Amur Area, the Library of the Arseniev Museum, Vladivostok Public Library, led to a discovery of much hitherto-unknown material A useful exchange of ideas was pursued between the Researcher-in-Chief of the Research Division on the History of the Primorskii Area, Vladivostok Public Library.
In December I traveled to New York, USA, to conduct research in the New York Public Library and the Libraries of Columbia University, where I read and copied, mainly articles from the Russian-Jewish-American emigre newspapers and journals such as "Novoe russkoe slovo" and "Novyi zhurnal," concerning Ivan Elagin.
On the basis of the material thus collected, I launched on their analysis. I have found that the use of pennames of the Far Eastern Russian writers express their sense of multiple identities as authors in margin and that the lives of the Matveevs are now turning into an urban myth in the critical discourse, etc.
In October I read a paper, entitled "The Study of the Literature of the Matveevs" at the annual convention of the Japan Society of Russian Literature.
Part of the research result was published in the journal Sever (Vol 19, Dec 2004). The entire report was published as a booklet.
