Observational studies have found that the frequency of mobile communication with close ties increases in times of emergency. However, the mechanisms underlying such increases are not well understood. Drawing upon terror management theory, this study predicted that increased mortality salience due to disaster promotes mobile voice calling to close ties. By analyzing digitally traced behavioral data, Study 1 found that mobile voice calls to close ties increased after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, especially in areas where there were severe tremors. Study 2 employed a field experiment and demonstrated that psychologically priming respondents to recall the earthquake led to an increase in the number of outgoing mobile voice calls to close ties, but not to non-close ties. The theoretical implications for mobile communication in time of disaster are discussed.

  • Effects of mortality salience on subjective temporal distance of achievement-relevant events: A comparative examination between self-enhancement and self-consistency strivings. Reviewed

Research based on terror management theory has shown that mortality salience instigates self-esteem strivings. However, recent study suggests that mortality salience engender not only self-esteem strivings but also strivings for self-consistency. The present article examines whether mortality salience increase consistency-strivings or self-esteem strivings when they are incompatible, employing subjective temporal distance of academic success and failure as dependent variables. Experiment 1 found that following mortality salience, individuals with low self-esteem report greater temporal distance of a success, while the high self-esteem counterpart report greater temporal distance of a failure. Experiment 2 showed that individuals with high academic contingency and low academic self-esteem report greater temporal distance of a success following mortality salience. Unexpectedly, individuals with low academic contingency and low academic self-esteem report smaller temporal distance of a success in response to mortality salience. These results indicate that under a certain condition, mortality salience instigate consistency-strivings rather than self-esteem strivings.

This study examined the relationships between two kinds of achievement motivation (self-fulfillment and competition) and two aspects of self-esteem (level and instability). University students (N=57) participated in a one-week diary survey. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed a level×instability interaction of selfesteem on self-fulfillment motivation. A high level of self-esteem was associated with strong motivation for self-fulfillment when self-esteem was stable. In contrast, high level of self-esteem was associated with weak motivation for self-fulfillment when self-esteem was instable. Neither level nor stability of self-esteem was significantly associated with motivation for competition. Discussion focused on the importance of considering both level and instability of self-esteem in analysis of achievement motivation.

  • Effects of Mortality salience on self-effacing attribution and anticipation for supportive attribution by close friends

Recent studies have suggested that interpersonal relationships have a buffering effect on existential terror, hence people strive to strengthen relationships in response to mortality salience (MS). Wakimoto (2006) have reported that Japanese show greater self-effacement as a way to maintain harmony in relationships when mortality is salient. Considering that Japanese people are likely to anticipate a supportive reaction by others when they show self-effacement, it was predicted that MS intensifies expectations of their friends' supportiveness, as well as expression of self-effacement. It was also expected that these effects would be moderated by attachment style. These predictions were examined with regard to causal attribution of past success and failure. Fifty-two Japanese undergraduates responded to items probing their attribution of past success and failure, and their prediction of their close friends' attribution of the events. The results indicated that MS raises expectations for supportive attribution form close friends, when self-effacing attribution is induced. However, an increase in expectation for supportive attribution after MS did not necessarily accompany more self-effacing attribution. Suggestions for future research on terror management through close relationships were discussed.
• Influence of level and instability of self-esteem on help-seeking orientation and help-seeking

There have been contrasting arguments on the relationship between self-esteem and help-seeking behavior. Some have argued that high self-esteem inhibits help-seeking, while others have maintained that it is those with low-self esteem that are reluctant to ask for help. The author proposed that this relationship is moderated by the instability of self-esteem. To examine this prediction, the stability and level of self-esteem were examined as predictors of help seeking orientation and actual help-seeking, whilst controlling for the frequency and day-to-day variation in interpersonal stress. With regard to actual help-seeking, separate examinations with regard to target, family members and non-family others, were also conducted. Forty-eight Japanese graduates and undergraduates participated in a one-week diary survey. Results indicated that among those whose self-esteem was instable, high self-esteem had a negative effect on help-seeking orientation and on the frequency of help-seeking behavior. In contrast, among those with stable self-esteem, the level of self-esteem was positively related to help-seeking orientation and frequency of help-seeking. With regard to help-seeking, this pattern was evident on help-seeking toward non-family others. Implications to future help-seeking study are discussed.
Terror management theory is a psychological theory which provides a possible answer to the question why human-beings need self-esteem and explains human social behavior in comprehensive manner. This article at first briefly introduces its theoretical backgrounds, assumptions, and main hypothesis. Review of studies based on terror management theory comes next. At last, studies which reported within- and between-culture differences of terror management strategy are introduced and suggestion concerning how terror management theory should incorporate these differences into its own theoretical framework was provided from the viewpoint of dynamic constructivism.
