Recently, changes in dietary life and rising awareness of agricultural food safety and health driven by economic growth have enhanced popular interest in organic rice production in Indonesia. Farmers are also showing a growing interest in organic rice cultivation since it can be sold at higher prices. In meeting such new demands, knowledge of chemical properties of rice is beneficial as fundamental information. Therefore, palatability-related characteristics, vibrational spectra and contents of water, ash, total C, total N and metal elements of milled rice that is popular in Indonesia, adding milled Japonica rice as control, were investigated in this study. The palatability scores of Indica rice were generally low, but those of organic rice varieties were slightly higher than conventional rice. No definite difference for FT-IR spectra was found between Japonica rice and Indica rice. Regarding total nitrogen content, organic rice showed low values, presumably reflecting reduced nitrogen input because of the use of organic fertilizers. Japonica rice showed higher contents of magnesium, silicon, iron, and copper and lower contents of rubidium and molybdenum compared to Indonesian rice. Organic rice varieties showed clearly lower contents of iron and zinc. It seems clear that if conversion to organic farming proceeds, then it will alter the dynamics of inorganic nutrients as well. Future research undertaken to do detailed content analysis pertaining to quality and palatability of Indica rice is needed, taking note of different cultivation methods.

Erianthus and Napier grass are large, C4 perennial grasses. Currently, we study on cultivation techniques of the two species in an attempt to use them as raw materials for cellulosic bioethanol. Energy crops should be grown in non-arable lands to avoid disturbance of food production so that their roots should be capable of acquiring water and nutrients from degraded soils. Because the entire aboveground biomass is harvested as raw materials, roots are only organic matters incorporated into soils. In energy crop cultivation, few studies were conducted belowground despite its importance. Thus, roots of the two species are also investigated in our study. Erianthus and Napier grass develop a large amount of roots in shallow soil layers while penetrating deeply. As a result, the amount of standing roots becomes very large compared with common crops, and a substantially large amount of dead roots is released into soils. Nodal roots are thick in diameter, and many starch grains accumulate in pith of their steles in autumn. Exodermis, endodermis and stele are unique in structure among gramineous plants. Soil sheath forms on root surfaces due to dense root hairs, and large air spaces are found in cortex. The two species can grow well in hard, poor soils and/or under flooded conditions. Soil carbon concentrations increase even after the repeated removal of entire aboveground biomass. Therefore, Erianthus and Napier grass should be potential energy crops in terms of their root growth and functions as well as their large aboveground biomass.

The growth and morphology of IL-srt1, a short-root near isogenic line derived from rice cultivar Oochikara, were characterized by paddy field and pot experiments, with particular focus on the interrelationship between shoot and root growth. The shoot dry weight, stem number, root length and root dry weight per hill of IL-srt1 were lower than those of Oochikara, but the number of crown roots per hill was the same for two cultivars (line). The root weight/root length ratio of IL-srt1 was higher than that of Oochikara, which was attributed to the difference of the mean root diameter, not to the specific gravity of roots. Root system surveys by monolith method revealed that IL-srt1 had smaller root length density at everywhere in soil, and narrow rooting zone. The number of stem per hill was responsible for the difference of shoot dry weight per hill, and there was no difference in shoot dry weight per stem. It was assumed that larger number of crown roots and higher percentage of young crown roots of IL-srt1 as compared to Oochikara might compensate for shorter root length per stem, and attained the same water and nutrient supply per stem. It was also assumed that the rooting zone would closely relate to the emergence and survival of tillers through the ability of water and nutrient supply.
