    This study evaluated the water soluble lead and the transportable lead of artificial lead-contaminated soil amended with phosphate material using water extraction test and unsaturated leaching model test. After the tests, an insoluble lead mineral formed was determined using X-ray diffraction. The application of amendment could suppress the level of water soluble lead and transportable lead in the neutral and acidic contaminated soil containing lead carbonate or chloride. Formation of insoluble lead mineral such as pyromorphite was identified or detected in both of amended soils after the tests. In water extraction test, the suppression level of water soluble lead corresponded to 72.6% of total lead content in soil while the formation level of pyromorphite-lead was lower at 51.6% of total lead content, suggesting that the other mechanism explained the suppression mechanisms of water soluble lead in addition to the formation of pyromorphite. Suppression level of transportable lead was compatible with the formation level of pyromorphite-lead, indicating that dissolved lead was transformed to the pyromorphite through the transporting process in unsaturated soil, which resulted in the lead immobilization.

    This study evaluated a hydroxyapatite synthesized from waste materials to remove fluoride from wastewater of Gero hot spring containing chloride ion with high level. In addition, this study investigated the mechanisms of fluoride removal by the apatite, the suitable condition of removal treatment, and the capability of reuse of apatite. The apatite could remove fluoride from the wastewater of hot spring below the Environmental Quality Standards for Water Pollution in Japan. The capacity of fluoride removal by apatite was higher than those previously reported. Fluoride sorbed on the apatite was chemically stable within pHs of 2 to 8, and 80% of fluoride removed by apatite was attributed to the precipitation of fluorapatite. The optimum treatment conditions of fluoride removal were the addition ratio of 2 g/L and the treatment time of 5 min. However, the reuse of apatite could not result in the fluoride removal below the standard.

    This study evaluated the lead sorption ability of apatite and residue ash recovered from sewage sludge ash to use them as a heavy-metal sorption amendment. The level of lead sorption and initial lead sorption rate of the apatite and residue ash were greatly higher than those of the sewage sludge ash, indicating that phosphorus recovery treatment from sewage sludge ash can enhance the capacity of lead sorption. The level of lead sorption enhanced further after dissolution-precipitation treatment of apatite. Lead was sorbed onto residue ash by the precipitation of lead sulfate, which correspond to 66% of total lead sorption. The level of lead sorption of residue ash was increased and the percentage of lead dissolution from residue ash was decreased with pH increase from acid to neutral. The lead sorption abilities of improved apatite and residue ash were equal and/or high compared with other apatites and industrial by-products/wastes, respectively, suggesting that they are probably able to be used as a lead sorption amendment from wastewater.

    Arsenic has been frequently detected over the Japanese environmental standard (0.01mg/L) in groundwater in western part of Nobi Plain. Arsenic leaching experiments using sediments samples in which arsenic was detected over or under the standard, by water, humic acid and calcium ion solution were carried out to investigate the mechanisms of arsenic release into groundwater.<br> Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from Nobi formation might enhance arsenic release, which arsenic sorbed onto iron oxide in the sediments, into groundwater constantly by competition of DOC and arsenic sorption and by arsenic-DOC complexation. Lower concentration of calcium ion in groundwater, south-western part of Nobi Plain might result in higher concentration of arsenic in the groundwater.

    Arsenic has been frequently detected with more than the Japanese environmental standard (0.01mg/L) in groundwater in south of Seino Basins, which locates in western part of Nobi Plain. Total content and chemical speciation of arsenic was evaluated by use of drilling samples of these area. The mechanisms of arsenic releasing to groundwater was investigated by some kinds of leaching experiments response to redox condition and pH.<br> The water soluble arsenic concentration was higher in the Nobi formation distributed at south-west part of the plain than in the Nan-yo formation of north-west. Dominant arsenic speciation in Nobi layer was As sorbed Fe- and/or Mn-oxides. Total arsenic content in the profile was correlated with total carbon and total ferric content in this part of the plane. These results suggested that As sorbed on to Fe- and/or Mnoxides in Nobi layer was the one of the origin of the arsenic dissolution to groundwater. The arsenic leaching experiments suggested that slightly high pH value of groundwater and dissolved organic carbon leaching from Nobi layer enhance arsenic release to groundwater.

    This study investigated the relationship between a apatite solubility and an amount and mechanisms of lead sorption using apatite samples, which have different cristalinities and impurities contents, to estimate the amount of the lead sorption onto the apatite from phosphorus extraction by a citric acid. The amount of the lead sorption increased linely with increases in an amount of calcium dissoleved from the apatite. It was considered that the sorption mechanism of lead were both precipitation of Pb-phosphate minerals like pyromorphite and surface complexations onto the apatite. The amounts of the lead sorption by surface complexations were almost equivalent even if the solubility of apatites was different, indicating that the increases in the solubility would only induce to the precipitation to increase the lead sorption. It was also confirmed that the maximum amount of lead sorption can be predicted from phosphorus extraction by 0.01M citric acid.

    We examined the effects of combined applications of ^<15>N-labeled ammonium sulfate and cattle composts on nitrogen dynamics under upland soil conditions in comparison with a single application of compost or of ^<15>N-labeled ammonium sulfate in incubation experiments. The amount of inorganic nitrogen (N) derived from the ammonium sulfate was smaller in the combined application than in the single application, indicating that some N derived from the ammonium sulfate was immobilized. The degree of immobilization was correlated with the amount of easily decomposable carbon (C) in the compost. Immobilized N tended to be re-mineralized during the incubation. The 1-month N mineralization rates of the composts increased by 5% to 10% after the application of ammonium sulfate. This increase was negatively correlated with the C/(N+fAN) ratio, where C and N represent the C and N contents derived from the compost, and fAN represents the amount of N derived from the ammonium sulfate. These results suggest that the pattern of N mineralization from compost was changed by the application of N fertilizer. Appropriate application rates can thus be calculated from the C/(N+fAN) ratio. In addition, it will be necessary to select composts that induce little immobilization of applied fertilizer N.

    Nitrogen (N) uptake by spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) was measured under the combined use of inorganic fertilizer and composts. The combined application of composts and ammonium sulfate increased N mineralization from the composts by about 5 to 10%. This increase in N mineralization was negatively correlated with the C/(N+fAN) ratio, where C and N represent the carbon (C) and N contents derived from the composts (mgkg^<-1> soil), and fAN represents the amount of N derived from ammonium sulfate (mg kg^<-1> soil). The combined application of ^<15>N ammonium sulfate and composts significantly increased spinach yield compared with a single application of ^<15>N ammonium sulfate. This was true for all composts used in this experiment. The combined application of ^<15>N ammonium sulfate and composts increased spinach uptake of N derived from the soil and the composts. Contents of soil inorganic N derived from soil and composts were positively correlated with N uptake by spinach from the soil and composts. These findings indicated that providing appropriate amounts of inorganic N fertilizer requires farmers to account for the additional mineralization of N from the composts when composts are also provided.

    In the drip-application (fertigation) culture, plant nutrients are supplied both from nutrient solution and from soil media. In this study, the effect of phosphorus contents in the soil or in the nutrient solution on the growth of melon (Cucumis melo) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) was examined. The soil used in this study was allophanic andosol which had high phosphorus fixation capacity. 1) When the Truog-P content was approximately 200 mg P_2O_5 kg^<-1> or more in the soil, the yield of melon (one fruit per plant) and tomato (in the fifth cluster stage culture) was almost the same regardless of the phosphorus contents in the nutrient solution. 2) When the Truog-P content was approximately 1000 mg P_2O_5 kg^<-1> or more in the soil, the absorption of phosphorus in melon and tomato was almost the same regardless of the phosphorus contents in the nutrient solution. 3) In the soil highly enriched with the phosphorus as frequently observed in farmers' greenhouse soils, there is no need to supply any further phosphorus in the nutrient solution because its recovery is very low. Curtailment of phosphorus is certainly helps to make the soil phosphorus status more appropriate and to reduce the fertilizer cost for the farmers. 4) As to the nutritional diagnostic criteria for the phosphorus concentration, we propose 150 mg P L^<-1> in the sap of melon petioles collected at the thinning in the spring-summer season, and 200 mg P L^<-1> in the sap of tomato petioles just under the first cluster fruits of 2-3 cm diameter in the fifth cluster stage culture in autumn-winter season. 5) Phosphorus concentration of the petiole sap reflected the phosphorus nutritional status very well. Therefore, by adjusting the nutrient composition of the solution with the soil testing before planting and with petiole sap diagnosis during the plant growth periods, we can achieve the optimized fertilization in the drip-application culture.

    We examined effects of SO_4^<2-> and Cl^- concentration in fertilizers on NO_3^- concentrations in spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) and ching guang juai (Brassica chinensis L.) in the isolation floor cultivation. By combining ammonium sulfate, ammonium chloride, urea or rapeseed meal as N fertilizer and potassium sulfate or potassium chloride as K fertilizer, various treatments were prepared in this experiment. Multiphosphate was uniformly applied as P fertilizer. They were applied as basal fertilizers at the rates of 15g of N per m^2, 6.5g of P per m^2, and 12.5 g of K per m^2. The main results obtained were as follows. 1) There were no differences in yield and nitrogen uptake of spinach and ching guang juai among the treatments. Nitrate concentration in plants decreased with the increase in the amount of Cl^- applied to the soil with highly negative correlation. In contrast, there was no relationship between NO_3^- concentration in plants and the amount of SO_4^<2-> applied to the soil. These findings indicate that application of chlorides to the soil lowers NO_3^- concentration in leaf vegetables without any effect on their growth. 2) As there was no significant difference in NO_3^- concentration in plants between ammonium sulfate and rapeseed meal applications, the effect of the form of fertilizers, inorganic or organic, was concluded to be minor to that of anions in fertilizer, SO_4^<2-> or Cl^-, on NO_3^- concentration in leaf vegetables.

    The applicability of Darcy's equation from microgravity to hypergravity was experimentally demonstrated. In the case of densely packed porous media, the water flux density in unsaturated porous media is independent of gravity. Under microgravity, in a space as small as the pore space in the porous media, "air supplementation in the pore" did not occur because the water wetted the entire pore space. Furthermore, two types of "infiltration in pore extensions," on a single particle and pore extensions formed at the boundary of particle layers, temporarily inhibited infiltration regardless of the presence or absence of gravity. The intrinsic permeability, which constitutes the hydraulic conductivity, was found to be independent of gravity. It was also experimentally confirmed that the physical properties of water are also independent of gravity.

    The aim of this study was to quantitatively determine the amounts of migration and supply of inorganic element to plant in the unsaturated soil with soluble and acid-insoluble organic matter of animal manure compost for the establishment of combined application of chemical fertilizer and compost. The migration of inorganic nutrient to root zone was increased by the addition of water-soluble organic matter of compost to the outer root zone. The increase in the migration of inorganic nutrient was correlated with the phenolic hydroxyl group in the water-soluble organic matter. The plant growth and nutrient uptake was also increased by the addition of acid-insoluble organic matter to the outer root zone. One of the factor relating with these improvements would be suppression of phosphorus immobilization by the organic matter.

    The purpose of the present study was to elucidate lead (Pb) immobilization mechanisms in Pb-Organic matter (OM)-Phosphorus (P) composite system in soil in order to establish in-situ soil remediation technique which can satisfy both Pb immobilization and rehabilitation of soil organisms using organic waste materials (animal manure compost). Also, it was to monitor once immobilized Pb in soil. The ratios of residual fraction after sequential extraction were significantly enhanced in soil amended with the compost having high P content, and organic matter fraction were the same level as compared with those in control soil. This result suggested that Pb would be immobilized even in Pb-OM-P composite system in soil not depending on existing organic matter. The dehydrogenase activity was higher in soil amended with compost having high OM content than in control soil. Over 99% of Pb once immobilized by animal manure compost would exist stably in soil. This study suggests that the animal manure compost having high inorganic matter, particularly P, and high maturity has a potential to satisfy Pb immobilization and rehabilitation in soil.
