This research project aims to clarify the size effects of thermal radiation from a dielectric microparticle.
Mie scattering theory predicts that thermal radiation becomes monochromatic on the surface phonon-polariton resonance when the emitting body shrinks into the submicron range. We first tried to observe IR spectrum of an optically trapped single particle, but our spectrometer was not sensitive enough to detect its weak signal. Switching to FTIR spectroscopy of particle ensembles, we have confirmed that submicron particles of silica and alumina thermally emit in the frequency range where thermal radiation from bulk materials is strongly restricted. Since surface phonon polaritons generally appear in the forbidden band, these FTIR spectra support the Mie theory. We also observed the Purcell effect, an enhancement of spontaneous emission of atoms inside a cavity, in thermal radiation spectrum of an optically trapped ruby microparticle.

Our original method of laser trapping has enabled emission spectroscopy of a high-temperature microparticle to clarify the size effects of thermal radiation.
The thermal emission spectrum of a micron-sized particle critically depends on the size and shape of the emitter via the cavity QED effect. In the case of a sphere, spontaneous emission is enhanced at frequencies resonant with specific whispering gallery modes of the spherical resonator. The observed spectral profiles are reproduced by calculations based on the Mie scattering theory and a semi-classical rate-equation model, which leads to a precise determination of optical constants of extremely hot materials. The Mie theory predicts that thermal radiation becomes monochromatic at the surface phonon-polariton resonance as the emitting body shrinks to submicron regime. Search for the mid-infrared spectrum is in progress.

Atom optics deals with optical phenomena of atomic beams, such as diffraction and interference, caused by the wave nature of matter. Diffraction gratings in optics have lattice constants of the order of microns. Correspondingly, those in atom optics require periodic structures of the order of nanometers since de Broglie wavelengths of atoms are extremely short. Our final goal is to develop an atom-optical grating with a 2-dimensional magnetic nanoparticle array synthesized and organized by biomaterials. The periodic Zeeman potential produced by the magnetic nanoparticles works as a reflective grating for atoms with spins. Towards the atom scattering experiment, we constructed a slow and coherent Cs beam source using laser cooling and trapping techniques. We also developed a new method of producing a 2-dimensional single crystal of ferritins, each of which contains a Fe3O4 nanoparticle.

Optical trapping, a technique of particle levitation using radiation pressure forces, was applied to suspend water droplets and ice crystals in air, and their phase transitions or growth processes were observed. Levitation allows supercooled water to crystallize in a well-controlled situation avoiding the effect of contact to solid surfaces. Morphology change of a water droplet induced by the solidification was detected from its Mie scattering pattern of the trapping laser beams. Raman spectra show that the local structure of the molecular network critically depends on the temperature under supercooled conditions. We also developed a quite stable optical trap assisted by an upward air current.

The project aims to solve the problem of quantum chaos using electromagnetically manipulated atoms. Summarized below are the outcomes of our research carried out toward this goal.
    1. We predicted that classical motion of atoms trapped in a magnetic potential becomes chaotic when the magnetic field is periodically modulated. Rb atoms were once laser-cooled to 10 μ K, then parametrically heated on the video-tape atom chip. The observed spectrum is well reproduced by numerical simulations based on Newton's equations of motion, showing that atoms behave as classical particles. We numerically demonstrated cooling or heating of the atom cloud without changing their internal energy. These researches were carried out in cooperation with Center for Cold Matter, Imperial College London.
    2. The transverse motion of atoms optically guided in a hollow-core fiber becomes chaotic when the light intensity is periodically modulated. For laser-cooling of the incident atoms, we stabilized the frequency of the newly introduced diode laser. Construction of a magneto-optical trap is now in progress. We have also developed a novel method of frequency stabilization that uses electromagnetically induced transparency.
    3. Two types of optical traps, both of which use counter propagating laser beams, were developed for micro-sized particles. Laser trapping of hexagonal ice crystals was demonstrated for the first time. In the CO_2 laser trap, air flow counteracts gravity and prolongs the trap time.
    4. Based on the shooting method, we developed a novel algorithm to search periodic orbits of a non-integrable system. Its feasibility was tested on the anisotropic Kepler problem and a hydrogen atom in electromagnetic fields. CPU time was remarkably saved.

The techniques of conventional laser cooling and trapping are not effective for molecules because the interaction between electromagnetic fields and molecules are usually very weak. The goal of this research project is to develop a 3-dimensional trapping for molecules by use of static electric fields or strong laser radiation. Outcomes of our research are summarized as follows.
    1. We theoretically investigated dynamics of linear polar molecules in static quadrupole electric fields and their collision process. Classical analysis shows that molecules rotating in a specific direction experience a restoring force toward the center of the field distribution, being 3-dimensionally trapped. The trapping lifetime was formulated in terms of the Majorana transition. We also proposed a method of decelerating molecules with a ring electrode.
    2. The optical dipole force was used to trap small crystals precipitated from saturated solution. It has been demonstrated that the mechanical force influences dynamics of crystal growth in supersaturated alum solution and produces spherical polycrystals. Precipitated crystals are spatially distributed by their size because of the difference in the gradient force acting on them.
    3. Laser ablation of molecular crystal was carried out to produce gaseous molecules inside a far-off-resonant optical dipole force trap. Our method is unique in that the trapping laser also works as an ablation light source. The laser ionization and detection of molecules trapped in the focus of CO_2 laser beam are now in progress.

The objective of this research is to develop a method that realizes quantum-state selected atomic (molecular) beams. We utilize the atom-guiding technique in which atoms are channeled through a laser-induced dipole-force potential well in a hollow fiber.
The outcomes of the two-year project are summarized as follows.
    (1) We constructed a vacuum chamber consisting of a Cs atomic beam source, a glass capillary mount, and an ion detection system.
    (2) In order to frequency-stabilize the guiding laser, we developed a novel sub-Doppler spectroscopy that uses a thin vapor cell.
    (3) Decelerating an incident atomic beam increases the guiding efficiency of the optical potential. As a preliminary experiment, we laser-cooled a Rb atomic beam and reduced its most probable velocity to half of the thermal one.
    (4) Tow methods were tested in the ionization detection of Cs atoms ; the surface ionization by a Pt hot wire and the laser induced ionization. We found that Cs atoms pumped to the 6PィイD23/2ィエD2 state are ionized by absorbing a single 532-nm photon from a Nd : YAG laser. In our experimental setup, the surface ionization method give much better S/N than the laser-induced ionization method.
    (5) Laser-guiding experiment was carried out on Cs DィイD22ィエD2 line. The number of Cs atoms ejecting from the capillary increased when the guiding laser was incident. However, this effect can not be attributed to the optical potencial because the guiding efficiency does not depend on the laser frequency.
