    Conformal maps are applied for designing foldable forms. This method is able to produce the complicated developed patterns for the geometrical forms such as cones, disks, and tori with different main curvatures from the simple developed patterns for cylinders that are already known, based on the similarity of the quadrilateral elements that determine regular fold lines.

    In this paper, a new vibration isolator using origami-based foldable structures is proposed and numerical simulation is performed to evaluate the performance of the isolator to prevent structural vibration. It has been known that the origami-based foldable structures using Kreslings pattern have bistability. However, that is true only if the bar elements which the structure comprises are uniformly distorted in order that the structure is symmetrically folded. To realize the bistability of the structure, we propose to apply additional linear springs to the original structure. In the first design, linear springs are applied, connecting diagonal nodes of the bar elements. In the second design, they are applied along to the axial direction of the structure. It is confirmed by numerical simulation that these designs successfully provide the bistable folding behavior and therefore, the structure with additional linear springs can work as a vibration isolator around the region that the total spring stiffness of the whole structure reaches the relative minimum value that is close to zero.

    In this paper, a new technique is shown to design crease patterns of meandering tubes by conformal transformation used for a flow with a source in fluid dynamics. It enables to design flat-foldable structures, which can be folded up onto plane and deployed in space at will, systematically by controlling the minimum number of design parameters, with fold lines regularly placed. The structure obtained by the proposed method consists of front and back patterns and is flat-foldable along two different axes. It is a simple method effectively utilizing the characteristics of conformal transformation that easily controls angles between fold lines.

    This paper presents modeling techniques for deployable meandering tubes with regular designs of fold lines, allowing cutting and removing parts of developed surface. First of all, a cylinder with constant curvature (i.e. a part of torus) is studied on the following conditions; Miura-fold pattern, bellows pattern and a pattern with six fold lines. These three patterns are able to provide deployable designs of fold lines on a developed surface of a part of torus which is approximated to a polyhedron. In addition, Miura-fold pattern and bellow pattern are able to connect with straight cylinders, since they still maintain substantially identical folding designs. Next, the theory is applied on a meandering tube constructed with different curvatures. Since the regularity of fold lines is still maintained, Miura-fold pattern and bellow pattern are able to provide deployable designs on the presupposition that the tube is made of sufficiently flexible material. Regularization of designs by this modeling can have advantages in standardization of product modules and simplification of manufacturing process in industry. Last, by using the conformal transformation, the deployable design is applied on a toroidal cone.

    This paper presents a new method using conformal transformation to obtain crease patterns of foldable circular membranes by wrapping around a center. This method enables to design complex structures systematically and efficiently from simple structures, controlling angles among fold lines for maintaining significant advantages of origami foldable and developable at will. It is shown that not only existing designs of foldable circular membranes, which are wrapped up and shaped as regular polygons, and also new designs, which are shaped as polygons with different sides or angles like a rectangle or a diamond shape, are successfully produced by the method. For foldable membranes to radial direction, the new method is more flexible to the designing of zigzag fold lines than the previous method by mirror image, since zigzag fold lines can be generated close to the center of membranes without geometrical constraint. Properties of the produced membranes are discussed in the paper.

    In this paper, a new method is shown to obtain developed patterns of conical origami shells from ones of cylinders by using conformal transformation. It enables to design foldable structures systematically, controlling angles among fold lines for maintaining the advanced function of folding and developing at will. Also, it is described the mathematical interrelation of two-dimensional origami patterns between cylinders and conical shells, and advantages on applying the mathematical technique on designs of origami structures. The method is to help us to imagine and model new foldable structures for future.

    We analyse a linear stability numerically for flows between two parallel vertical plates with a constant vertical temperature gradient in a region where the Reynolds number is high by extending the linear analysis of Chen & Chung for low Reynolds number regions. The connection between the flow and the pure Poiseuille flow is clarified. We also carried out a nonlinear analysis for this flow. It is found that the bifurcation of the nonlinear solution is supercritical or subcritical depending on the sign of the temperature gradient.
