    Chirality ubiquitously appears in nature; however, its quantification remains obscure owing to the lack of microscopic description at the quantum-mechanical level. We propose a way of evaluating chirality in terms of the electric toroidal monopole, a practical entity of time-reversal even pseudoscalar (parity-odd) objects reflecting relevant electronic wave functions. For this purpose, we analyze a twisted methane molecule at the quantum-mechanical level, showing that the electric toroidal monopoles become a quantitative indicator for chirality. In the twisted methane, we clarify that the handedness of chirality corresponds to the sign of the expectation value of the electric toroidal monopole and that the most important ingredient is the modulation of the spin-dependent imaginary hopping between the hydrogen atoms, while the relativistic spin–orbit coupling within the carbon atom is irrelevant for chirality.

    The odd-frequency superconductivity, in which the particles form peculiar Cooper pairs with odd relative time dependence, has attracted growing interest as new class of unconventional superconductors. This exotic pairing state, however, has been suffering from the puzzles on its thermodynamic instability and unphysical electromagnetic responses, if we would apply the standard prescription for the superconducting state. Here, we show that these puzzles can be resolved by reconsidering the underlying conditions for conventional pairing states: (a) the Hermitian relation between gap function and its conjugate counterpart and (b) the zero center-of-mass momentum of a Cooper pair. When one of these conditions are modified appropriately, the bulk odd-frequency superconductivity can be realized as a stable quantum state of matter. We discuss the fundamental aspects of the odd-frequency superconductivity on the basis of recent theoretical development, and remaining issues to be addressed in the future.

    近年,多体摂動論に基づく連続時間量子モンテカルロ法のアルゴリズムが提出され,強相関電子系の動的平均場近似における有力な不純物(クラスター)ソルバーとして広く用いられるようになってきた.本稿では,不純物Anderson模型を主な題材として,相互作用および混成(運動エネルギー)項に関する展開アルゴリズムを解説する.また,実際にプログラムを作成する際の注意点や計算効率について述べる.電子-格子相互作用系への適用など,最近の発展についても簡単に紹介する.

  • カイラル物質が誘導する非局所スピン偏極の解明と基礎学理の構築

    非磁性・絶縁体カイラル結晶である水晶においてスピン信号を電気検出することに世界で初めて成功し、論文発表に至った。カイラル結晶に特有の振動運動(カイラルフォノン)が持つ角運動量をスピン角運動量に変換できることを示しており、本研究課題の作業仮説《構造の揺らぎと電子スピン間の角運動量のやり取り》を実証するものである。カイラル物質が示すスピン偏極の発現機構を解明するための重要な手掛かりを得たと考えている。
    さらに、「物質合成」「物性計測」「理論」の観点から研究を進め、次の研究成果を得た。
    「物質合成」:カイラリティ制御した大型単結晶やナノ結晶の育成に成功した。長尺試料やナノシートを用いてスピン偏極応答を調べている。
    「物性計測」:合成したカイラルナノ物質を対象に光照射下での電気輸送特性の計測を進めている。また、円偏波マイクロ波や円偏波超音波を用いた高周波計測の開発を進め、カイラル磁気秩序の共鳴特性を明らかにした。キラル超伝導体の電気伝導における磁気キラル異方性の研究を行い、超伝導転移点付近で従来の理論予想をはるかに超える非相反伝導特性を観測した。
    「理論」:格子系の自由度に焦点を当てた理論研究を進めた。カイラル結晶のらせん対称操作を考慮した格子振動の波動関数を構築し、それを用いて擬角運動量と力学的角運動量の定量的な計算の枠組みを構築した。また、多極子基底を用いた電気・磁気クラスターの表現論を応用し、カイラリティの量子論的な定義を明確にした。さらに、多極子完全基底の枠組みを現実の物質系に適用するソフトウェア開発を行い、カイラル系の典型物質であるテルルや捻りメタンなどを対象に、第一原理電子状態計算ベースで定量的に分析した。また、カイラル系の新しい交差相関応答を提案した。

    固体結晶中の多様な電子自由度を多極子の自由度を用いて整理することで、交差相関物性を系統的に理解する試みにおいて、電子系のハミルトニアンを多極子基底で展開する一般的手法を開発した。また、線形及び非線形応答において、その発現に必須のモデルパラメータを系統的に特定する手法を開発し、多極子基底で 表したハミルトニアンと併用して、各種物性応答の微視的起源を明らかにする一般的な処方箋を与えた。また、これらの基底を視覚的に表現する描画ツールを開発し、一般公開している。
    以上の知見を基に、カイラル物質を量子論の観点から理解することを目標にして、以下のような成果を得た。カイラル系の典型物質Teに手法を適用し、カイラリティに関与するミクロな電子自由度を特定し、電場と格子回転のような極性と軸性を変換する新しい応答現象を見出した。カイラリティを量子論的に理解するための概要をまとめたレビュー論文を執筆した。カイラル物質に対する電磁場応答を、フロッケ理論を活用して解析し、円偏光電磁場とカイラリティの結合様式を明らかにした。また、カイラル結晶とカイラルフォノンとの結合に関して、格子模型を用いて解析し、エネルギー分散に関して一般的に成り立つ法則を明らかにした。そのほか、強軸性秩序と呼ばれる系に対する横型応答を利用したスピン流生成の提案、電場によるキラリティの誘起、また、ある種の反強磁性体は軸性のスカラー秩序とみなせて、この状態に静的な電場と磁場を印加することによりカイラリティが誘起できることなどを提案した。さらに、秩序変数が長年未解決のURu2Si2の秩序変数として交替型のカイラル電荷秩序というシナリオを提案し、可能な確認実験を提案した。

    対称性の破れ,特に本課題では数ある多極子自由度の中でも四極子による秩序に焦点をあてて,特徴的な構造をもつ新規状態の解析や,未知の秩序変数の解明,その秩序相内における交差応答などを解析することが目標である.2023年度の研究概要として,(1)四極子秩序を示すCeCoSiについての第一原理計算に基づく多極子間RKKY相互作用の解析,(2)非整合波数の3重q四極子秩序を示すミニマル模型の古典モンテカルロ解析,(3)Pr系1-2-20系化合物における温度磁場相図のランダウ理論による解析,(4)URhSnの未知の非磁性秩序についてのカイラル四極子秩序の提案,(5)ダブルペロブスカイト化合物Ba2MgReO6における誘起強四極子モーメントの電子的機構の提案および有効磁気モーメントの発現機構の解析,(6)局所空間反転対称性のない系における非共面磁気秩序とボンド四極子の発現などが挙げられる.その他にも三角格子上の双極子ー四極子のハイブリッド秩序の解析や,種々の交差相関や輸送係数についての解析を行なっている.2023年12月には,本科研費が主催する若手理論研究者向けの研究会を3日間にわたって開催した.あいにくの大雪に見舞われたが,少人数の研究会の利点を活かし,13名の参加者には1時間程度の持ち時間で普段聞けない研究の詳細についても紹介してもらうことができた.参加者の間で濃密な議論を行うことができ,貴重な時間を共有できたと感じており本計画研究へのフィードバックも今後期待できる.

  • 四極子自由度に内在する新奇物性の開拓

    2021年度の研究は,PrV2Al20におけるtriple-qの四極子八極子秩序,磁気四極子によるスピン軌道運動量ロッキング機構の提案,異方的磁気双極子による異常ホール効果,ホールドープシャンダイトにおける磁気および輸送特性の研究,非線形応答関数の微視的な定式化など,種々のシステムにおける解析を多極子をベースにしつつ行った.以下では,これらのうちの3つを紹介する.
    (1) PrV2Al20におけるtriple-qの四極子八極子秩序(服部):四極子近藤系物質であるPrV2Al20の2つの低温相の候補として,triple-q多極子秩序を提案した.四極子秩序の異方性がtriple-q秩序を安定化させ,さらにtriple-q八極子秩序と共存する相への二段転移を引き起こすことを明らかにした.温度ー磁場相図における相の数や臨界磁場の大きさなど,結果の多くはPrV2Al20での実験と定性的に一致することがわかった.
    (2) ホールドープシャンダイトにおける磁気および輸送特性の研究(柳)
    第一原理計算を用いて,ホールドープしたシャンダイトCo3InxSn(2-x)S2の磁気及び輸送特性を調べた.解析の結果,報告されているInのドーピングによる異常ホール効果の非線形な減少を,仮想結晶近似により強磁性モーメントの線形な減少に対して再現することができた.また,フェルミ面上のバンドのパリティ状態が大きく変化することで,異常ネルンスト効果が符号を反転させ,かつ増大することも明らかにした.
    (3)非線形応答関数の微視的な定式化(楠瀬)様々な応答テンソルの任意の成分が発現するのに必要な本質的なモデルパラメータを同定する系統的な手法を提案した.ケルディッシュ形式とチェビシェフ多項式法を用いて,応答テンソルをモデル非依存部分と依存部分に分解し,後者を用いて本質的なパラメータを抽出する微視的な定式化に成功した.

    We have developed solid-state physics research based on "augmented multipoles," which are the combined degrees of freedom of charge, spin, and orbitals of electrons on an atom, as well as electrical and magnetic clusters and bond clusters formed across multiple atoms. We have advanced the understanding of various physical phenomena that are difficult to describe by conventional methods using basic degrees of freedom of charge, spin, and orbitals, as well as the possibility of predicting new functionalities.

    We have developed the quantum-conducting phenomena and exotic optical responses driven by spontaneous symmetry breaking of space-time inversion symmetry for f- and d-electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. We have elucidated their mechanism from the microscopic point of view. Especially, we have achieved the following results: (1) the prediction of magneto-current effect in UNi4B showing vortex-like magnetic ordering, which is regards as the ferroic toroidal ordering, (2) the prediction of non-reciprocal magnon in the zig-zag structure corresponding to α-Cu2V2O7, (3) microscopic understanding for peculiar magneto-electric effect observed in Co4Nb2O9, (4) comprehensive understanding of cross correlations based on two-band Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Moreover, we have developed the theoretical framework of argumented multipoles, namely, cluster and hybrid multipoles, which are very useful to analyze a variety of cross-correlated phenomena in s
    systematic way.

    We studied the controllability of spin and charge distributions through a quantum effect called "Kondo effect", using a triangular triple-quantum-dot system in which each quantum dot is regarded as an artificial atom. In the field of nanotechnology, we introduce a new aspect of multiferroics, for instance, a magnetic-field control of electric polarization.
    The main results are as follows: (1) a sign reversal of emergent electric polarization through a competition between two quantum states; (2) field control of oscillation patterns of emergent electric polarization; (3)a sign reversal of emergent electric polarization through the Kondo effect due to molecular orbitals of the triangular loop.
    The above results would contribute to opening up a new area of the Kondo physics.

    We proposed a theory for complicated quantum spin systems in which plural spins interact with each other strongly. The strongly interacting part can be regarded as a multispin unit and we introduced a form factor that depends on magnetic structure of the multispin unit. We applied the theory to a particular materials and investigated intensity of inelastic neutron scattering. When the magnetic ion is located at a site without inversion symmetry, quadrupole operator becomes equivalent to the electric polarization. This results in maltiferroic properties. In a particular material, there are intersite quadrupole interactions. We reported that they can determine the easy axis.

    We have developed the fundamental theory for odd-frequency superconductivity. We found that a self-consistent bulk state is possible by choosing an appropriate order parameter that minimizes the free-energy functional in a spontaneous symmetry breaking. We elucidated the strong-coupling local electron-phonon model and the model having a critical magnetic fluctuation, we determined the phase diagram in temperature and parameter space. The critical fluctuation with logarithmically divergent attraction makes it stable against the self-energy effect. We further investigated the mechanism of the appearance of the odd-frequency component near an impurity site or on a surface boundary by solving the self-consistent equations with such boundary conditions, and showed the relationship between the microscopic and semi-phenomenological understandings for the nature of the order parameters.

    Heavy electron phenomena emerge in rare-earth and actinide compounds, when f electron exhibits huge effective mass which is a few hundred or thousand times as large as the bare electron mass. Thus far, the heavy electron state has been understood by the competition between itinerant and localized nature of f electron. In this research, we have clarified new heavy-electron mechanisms due to multi degrees of freedom such as f-electron orbital and phonon in addition to spin and charge. We have also developed the theory of ordering of multipole as spin-orbital complex, quantum criticality due to valence fluctuations, superconductivity due to anharmonic phonons, and orbital-fluctuation-induced superconductivity in orbital degenerate systems.

    Superconductivity is one of central issues in progress of science technology. We investigate additional degrees of freedom such as orbital that differ from magnetic degrees of freedom, which are relevant to stability conditions of higher temperature superconductors. In a multiband case, for increase of the transition temperature of superconductivity, we focus on(1) relative signs of order parameters in superconducting bands and(2) multipole(orbital moment) types of magnetic impurities coupled to band electrons. This result gives a new concept for the study of superconductivity and magnetism.

    理論班は,スクッテルダイト系における新奇現象理解への鍵となる概念形成を行い,全計画班の連携をサポートすることなどを主要な目標として活動した。その結果,以下を例とする多くの成果を得た。
    1. Prスタッテルダイトでは,結晶場状態により,近藤効果の重要性が大きく異なることを微視的な計算によって示した。
    2. PrFe4P12やPrRu4P12の秩序変数は,結晶の立方対称性を保つスカラー型であり,これが交替的に副格子を形成していることを提案し,温度に依存する結晶場状態など多くの実験を説明した。
    3. SmRu4P12の奇妙な相図と物性について,磁気八極子が主要な秩序変数であることを確認し,CeB6との類似性から特徴的なNQRパターンなどを説明できることを指摘した。
    4.多極子秩序による帯磁率,磁気異方性への反映を現象論を用いて明らかにした。これにより実験結果を多極子の描像によって合理的に解釈した。
    5. PrFe4P12の複雑な核磁気共鳴スペクトルを対称性を考慮して解析し,スカラー型秩序変数の描像で説明できることを示した。
    6.伝導電子のバンド構造が秩序構造に与える役割を明らかにした。特に結晶構造とリガンド電子の構造により強いネスティングが存在することが,多極子の反強的秩序形成に重要であることを示した。
    7.スクッテルダイト特有の構造によるラトリングの役割に注目し,超音波物性に対する特有の効果を明らかにした。また磁場に鈍感な重い電子生成に導く可能性を指摘した。

    平成17年度は,以下の研究を遂行した。
    1.スクッテルダイト系の動力学を近藤効果を考慮したモデル計算により求めた。前年度までに混成相互作用による結晶場の形成を詳しく調べていたが,今年度はこの成果を基にして,高次の混成効果の物理量への反映をNCAによって定量的に導出した。その結果,結晶場一重項と近藤一重項の競合が励起結晶場準位だけでなく,その波動関数にも強く依存している様相を明らかにした。
    2.スクッテルダイト系の電子状態と動力学の全体像を明らかにするためのレビューを行なった。この中で,局所的な混成相互作用とサイト間相互作用の両方の効果を考慮することの重要性を強調し,定量的な理論結果と実験結果との比較を行なった。
    3.PrFe4P12の電子秩序を分子場理論で研究した。特に[111]方向の高磁場でのみ現れる秩序相と,無磁場でも現れる別の秩序相を同一のモデルから再現した。その結果,四極子相互作用とともに,双極子と八極子のサイト間相互作用が重要であることがわかった。0_2^0型の四極子秩序を仮定すると,PrOs4Sb12の場合とは異なり,基底状態に縮退が残ることを示した。量子力学的な揺らぎを考慮すると,この縮退は除かれ,最終的な秩序変数は四極子ではなく,むしろ結晶場スカラーである可能性を指摘した。このスカラーは球対称の場では,16極子あるいは64極子という高次の多極子に対応する。
    4.上記のスカラー秩序変数モデルを,PrFe4P12の磁場中中性子散乱とNMRの実験結果の解釈に用いつつある。誘起反強磁性のモーメントが磁場に垂直な成分を持たないという結果は,四極子秩序変数と矛盾することを明らかにした。一方,スカラー秩序変数モデルは,現象論的パラメタを導入することによって,NMRスペクトルの方向依存性や誘起磁化,秩序温度の磁場方向依存性などを自然に説明する。

    Theoretical study was made on the following aspects.
    *Microscopic study of interactions for orbital order
    We explained the origin of characteristic wave numbers in the ordering pattern of rare-earth hexaborides.
    *Band theory taking account of the orbital order
    We developed a new calculational scheme within the so-called LDA+U method in order to derive the band structure in the presence of orbital orders. The results clarify the relashionship between the band structure and the physical properties.
    *Theory of orbital degrees of freedom and magnetic order
    (1) CeB6 : In the quadrupole ordered phase of CeB6, we have predicted that magnetic field induces staggered octupoles. Within this project natural explanation for the phenomena was provided on the basis of analyzing interaction among Ce ions. Furthermore, we pointed out the importance of pseudo-dipolar interactions in understanding the orthogonal arrangement of nearest-neighbor moments in CeB6.
    (2) Yb4As3 : Charge ordering of this compound leads to a characteristic magnetic property at low temperature. We derived the effective Hamiltonian for the system, which describes accurately the anisotropy including the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction.
    (3) TmTe : This compound has the cubic symmetry and has the crystalline-electric-field ground state. Hence we examined the character of the quadrupole order and magnetic moment induced by magnetic field, in comparsion with CeB6.

    Formulation of theoretical framework with account of orbital fluctuations We extended the mean-field theory to take account of fluctuation effects. The new theory becomes exact in the limit of infinite spatial dimensions, and is regarded as a quantummechanical extension of the spherical model approximation for classical spins. Our theory goes one step beyond the other ones that use localized fermions to represent spins.
    Explanation of the strange order in orbitally degenerate electron systems such as CeB_6 and Ce_<0.75>La_<0.25>B_6
    We explained origin of strange magnetic order in the phase III of CeB_6 by assuming a pseudo-dipolar interaction between next-nearest-neighbor sites. Furthermore, we discussed possibility of an octupole order for the newly found phase IV in Ce_<0.75>La_<0.25>B_6. We found a new plase which lies energetically close to the already observed phases, and which may be realized in the presence of external field such as uniaxial pressure. We developed new functional integral formalism to perform the Ginzburg-Landau expansion microscopically.
    Spin and orbital wave excitations in orbitally degenerate electron systems
    We derived the dispersion relations of elementary excitations from the complicated spinorbital ordered state. The large unit cell with 16 Ce ions give rise to 48 branches. We derived all branches and found characteristic relation between the spectrum and the multipolar interaction. In particular some branches are almost flat along certain directions of wave vector, which may be checked by neutron diffraction.
    Exact dynamics of orbitally degenerate one-dimensional systems
    So far we explained results for three-dimensional systems. In low dimensions, the role of fluctuations is much more important. In order to see the situation most clearly, we studied an exactly soluble model in one dimension. This model has the SU (4) symmetry to represent the degeneracy, and the interaction is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (1/γ^2). We succeeded in deriving the dynamical correlation function exactly.

    f電子化合物のうち立方対称性を有するような物資は、しばしばKramers縮退に加えて、軌道の縮退をも併せ持つ。このような軌道縮退を伴う物質では、高次の多極子テンソルが有限の行列要素を持ち、軌道自由度とスピン自由度の絡み合いが新しい物性を引き起こしている可能性がある。そこで、f電子と伝導電子間の相互作用の結果として導かれる電子状態が如何なるものであるかを、多重軌道のアンダーソン模型を出発点として調べる。
    まず、軌道とスピンの自由度を時間反転対称性の違いという観点から分類することで、多極子と伝導電子の間の交換相互作用模型を導出した。この模型の電子状態を三次の摂動論的繰り込み群を用いて解析し、新たな非フェルミ液体固定点の存在を予言した。この解析的結果を数値繰り込み群の方法を用いて定量的に議論し、非フェルミ液体固定点のユニバーサルクラスの決定、フェルミ液体へのクロスオーバー、軌道、スピンのダイナミクスなどを明らかにした。
    これとは、別にCeB_6のLa置換系に見られるIV相と呼ばれる新しい相において、一次元表現に属する八極子が隠れた秩序変数である可能性を指摘した。
