    In a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), electrochemical doping caused by mobile ions facilitates bipolar charge injection and recombination emissions for a high electroluminescence (EL) intensity at low driving voltages. We present the development of a nanogap LEC (i.e., nano-LEC) comprising a light-emitting polymer (F8BT) and an ionic liquid deposited on a gold nanogap electrode. The device demonstrated a high EL intensity at a wavelength of 540 nm corresponding to the emission peak of F8BT and a threshold voltage of ∼2 V at 300 K. Upon application of a constant voltage, the device demonstrated a gradual increase in current intensity followed by light emission. Notably, the delayed components of the current and EL were strongly suppressed at low temperatures (<285 K). The results clearly indicate that the device functions as an LEC and that the nano-LEC is a promising approach to realizing molecular-scale current-induced light sources.

    It is demonstrated that dipolar doping of hole transport layers (HTLs) controls the density and polarity of the accumulated charge at the critical interface between the HTL and the emission layer (EML) in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Dipolar doping enables spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) even in nonpolar HTL, and consequently compensates for the negative interface charge originating from the SOP of the adjacent layer. The results suggest that besides the energy level offset, SOP and permanent dipole moment of the materials should also be taken into account for realizing efficient carrier blocking interfaces. Dipolar doping is a versatile tool to tune charge accumulation, and to study its influence on device performance as well as the role of SOP in OLEDs.

    An extended displacement current measurement (DCM) is performed to analyze the operation mechanisms of a poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative (Super Yellow)-based light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). The characteristics of the actual current, displacement current, and electroluminescence (EL) intensity during the relaxation processes of electrochemical doping are simultaneously measured. The extended DCM enables us to comprehensively analyze the operation mechanisms of LECs on the basis of the simultaneous observations of electrical and luminous characteristics, including their transient changes.

    われわれは,三重項-ポーラロン消光(TPQ)特性の評価法として変位電流と発光強度の同時測定法(DCM-PL法)を提案している.本研究では,代表的なリン光発光材料であるtris[2-phenylpyridine]iridium(III)(Ir(ppy)3)およびbis[2-(2-pyridinyl-N)phenyl-C](acetylacetonato)iridium(III)(Ir(ppy)2(acac))を用いた発光層にDCMPL法を適用し,電子および正孔蓄積に対するTPQ速度定数を見積もった.その結果,いずれの発光層の場合も,電子よりも正孔蓄積によるTPQ速度定数の方が大きく,同じ極性の蓄積電荷で比較すると,Ir(ppy)3の方がIr(ppy)2(acac)よりもTPQを引き起こし易いことがわかった.

    This study investigates the impact of spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) in the emission layer (EML) on the charge accumulation and exciton-polaron quenching (EPQ) characteristics of Ir-complex-based organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using displacement current measurements combined with photoluminescence intensity measurements and device simulations. A significant SOP is induced in the EML depending on the SOP-active material content, which modifies the accumulated charge distribution in the EML. Notably, the SOP can suppress the EPQ, particularly when the energy offset at the interface between the hole transport layer and the EML is small. These findings highlight the importance of SOP in optimizing the OLED device performance.

    The alignment of permanent dipole moments and the resulting spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) are commonly observed in evaporated neat films of polar organic molecules and lead to a so-called giant surface potential. In the case of mixed films, often enhanced molecular orientation is observed, i.e., a higher degree of alignment, in comparison to neat layers, if it is diluted into a suitable (nonpolar) host. So far, different possible influences on molecular orientation have been discussed, with the most prominent probably being the so-called surface equilibration model. In this contribution, we discuss how surface equilibration can influence orientation in mixed layers and which other intermolecular interactions have to be considered to explain the observed enhancement of SOP in mixed layers.

    This work delves into the correlations of the interface charge accumulation and degradation properties of Alq3-based OLEDs. The interface accumulated charge density is modified by SOP induced in the HTL by means of dipolar doping. It is confirmed that NPB cation acts as an exciton quencher, but TCTA cation does not, depending on the spectral overlap of Alq3 emission and the absorption of the respective cations. On the other hand, the TCTA devices degrade much faster than the NPB devices. Moreover, the device lifetime is similar or even shorter for the doped devices despite less interface charge density. These results suggest that holes accumulated at the interface between the hole transport material and Alq3 due to SOP are not mainly involved in the degradation mechanism. Furthermore, it is found that the charge traps generated due to degradation do not act as exciton quenchers, suggesting that they rather act as nonradiative recombination centers.

    Here, a method is proposed for outcoupling enhancement that actively controls the refractive index of a hole transport layer (HTL) in OLEDs using a stably evaporable perfluororesin, which has a low refractive index and high amorphousness. Using the low-index co-deposited HTL, a 1.22-fold enhancement of the outcoupling efficiency of a phosphorescent OLED is demonstrated. The proposed method can be generally applied to OLEDs to significantly enhance their outcoupling efficiency without increasing process cost. The results show the potential of active refractive index control as a major strategy for achieving further high-efficiency OLEDs.

    In the present work, this extended DCM method was employed for Super Yellow-based LECs with two typical active layer thicknesses of approximately 60 and 120 nm, and the relaxation processes of the resulting devices were investigated. In the thick-film device, the deterioration of the luminous efficiency was dominated by the optical processes of self-absorption and exciton–polaron quenching, whereas in the thin-film device, the deterioration was facilitated by the electronic process of carrier injection. The carrier balance factor was critical to the luminous efficiency of the thin-film device under reverse-bias operation, although this was not the case for the thick-film device. The results indicate that the ECD relaxation propagates from the bulk to the interface and confirm that the active layer thickness is a major factor in the maintenance of efficient carrier injection. The extended DCM method is a promising approach for analyzing the dynamic and complex properties of LECs.

    In this study, we investigated the spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) in coevaporated films of polar and nonpolar molecules. We found that the molecular orientation of TPBi in both UGH‐2 and CBP hosts was enhanced, though the apparent enhancement factor was small in the UGH‐2 host. The enhancement of the molecular orientation is attributed to the reduction of the electrostatic interaction between polar molecules (TPBi), which deteriorates SOP as previously reported. In addition, our results suggest that the SOP of TPBi is robust even in the UGH‐2 host, in contrast to the random orientation of Ir complexes in the UGH‐2 host. Considering a polyhedral shape of Ir complexes, the robust SOP of TPBi in the host molecules with a weak van der Waals interaction, such as UGH‐2, is possibly due to its disk‐like molecular shape.

    We applied displacement current measurement (DCM) to an organic solar cell (OSC) with a structure of ITO/CuPc/C60/BCP/Al in order to investigate the origin of a negative capacitance (NC). In DCM curve, an anomalous characteristic that the current in backward scan was larger than that in forward scan was observed. We found that this characteristic originates from a gradual increase of an additional current, leading to NC in DCM. The additional current can be explained by the increase of the device temperature owing to a Joule heat and thermal deactivation of the exciton. Moreover, NC value was observed to be enhanced by light irradiation due to an additional temperature increase.

    2-amino-4,5-imidazoledicarbonitrile (AIDCN) is known as a promising material for organic nonvolatile memory application, and it has been reported that the performance of the AIDCN-based devices strongly depends on electrode metals. In the present study, we carried out photoemission spectroscopy (PES) measurements on the organic-on-metals (Ag and Al) and metals-on-organic model interfaces of an AIDCN-based memory device. The AIDCN overlayers on the Ag surface formed a sharp interface without apparent chemical interaction, while clear signs of a chemical reaction between the metal and AIDCN and formation of Al clusters in the AIDCN overlayers were revealed on the Al surface. Tendencies of the vacuum level shift and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) positions depending on the AIDCN coverage looked similar irrespective of the substrates. In the case of the metals-on-organic interfaces, in contrast, the shifting tendencies were opposite depending on the top-electrodes;the Ag-on-AIDCN interface showed upward band-bending with increasing the metal thickness, whereas downward bend-bending was observed for the Al-on-AIDCN interface. A possible origin of the band-bending is explained as intercalation of Ag or Al that behaves as acceptor- or donor-centers, respectively, into the AIDCN film.

    We examined the mechanism of charge accumulation in organic light-emitting diodes comprising tris-(8-hydroxyquinolate) aluminum (Alq_3) using a displacement current measurement. Depending on the applied biasing voltage, two kinds of accumulation behavior were observed. At the biases lower than the built-in voltage (V_<bi>), the amount of hole accumulated at 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino]-biphenyl/Alq_3 is dominated by the negative charge at the interface, but at the biases higher than V_<bi>, it is determined by the conductivity of each layer. In addition, we found that light irradiation during the device fabrication significantly reduces the amount of hole accumulated at the interface, suggesting that the orientation polarization in Alq_3 film is responsible for the charge accumulation properties.

    Threshold voltage shift in the Coulomb staircase induced by photoirradiation, that is, photoinduced gate modulation, was observed at a temperature of 15 K. The samples denoted by Au/PI/CuttbPc/PI/Al consisted of Kapton-type polyimide (PI) spin-coated films with copper tetra-t-butyl phthalocyanine (CuttbPc), sandwiched between Au and Al electrodes. The temperature dependence of the Coulomb staircase was also examined within the range of 15 K to 300 K. The single electron tunneling process was dominant below 150 K, whereas a thermally assisted electron conduction mechanism such as the hopping mechanism was dominant above 150 K. It was found that the photoinduced gate modulation and the temperature dependence observed in the Coulomb staircase of our junctions could be well explained by taking into account the space charge behavior at the metal/organic ultra-thin film interface.

    This chapter presents the relations between spontaneous orientation polarization (SOP) and the charge carrier dynamics as well as degradation properties in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), particularly focusing on the interface properties. The interface charge model describes how SOP affects the charge injection and accumulation behavior. The polarization charge may enhance the carrier injection from the electrode. The chapter discusses these issues. It shows the electron injection property of bilayer devices incorporating a polar film at the cathode side. The chapter also shows degradation mechanisms of a phosphorescent OLED incorporating a polar film as an electron transport layer, studied by a combination of time resolved electroluminescence spectroscopy and displacement current measurement. Controling SOP based on the molecular design would be an important issue to improve device performance and exploit innovative functions of organic semiconductors.

    We examined the fabrication of single-electorn transistors (SETs) with oligothiophene derivative or Au nano particle covered with oligothiophene as Coulomb island. The SET device was consisted of a nanogap electrode, a molecular Coulomb island, and back gate electrode. The nanogap electrode was fabricated by the electromigration method. We could obtain the SET characteristics from the electron transport properties of both devices at UK. Spectra that owing to a molecule was obtained in the electric transport properties of these devices at 11K. Moreover, we could obtain the SET characteristics in some devices.

    Single electron tunneling (SET) Device have attracted great interests due to their potential application in nano-electronics devices and information/communication devices. A typical configuration of this device is a small metal or semiconductor island, so-called Coulomb island. When we use the single molecules for Coulomb island of SET Device, it is easy and useful to make devices and to operate the device characteristics by photo-irradiation. Then, we try to make the single molecular SET device. We try to investigate the electrical and photonics properties of these devices. However, SET device do not have system architect affinity with CMOS architecture. In this report, we introduce the new Delay-Insensitive architecture and Charge-state Logic architecture with good affinity of SET device. And we try to make and study the organic SET device with SET Logic (wire) like molecule in the Island.

    An organic single electron tunneling (SET) device is prepared by using a rhodamine-dendrimer (Rh-G2) molecule as small center electrode. The step structure, that is one of the important properties of SET, can be found in the Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the devices at a temperature below 35 K. Based on the theory of Coulomb blockade and assuming the rhodamine as metallic droplet, the capacitance formed between the metal and Rh-G2 was estimated from the I-V characteristics. The effect of space charges that exist at the metal/organic film interface on SET characteristic was also discussed.

    We examined the I-V characteristic of metal/polyimide/rhodamine-dendorimer/ polyimide/metal element made by the LB technique. A step structure was observed in the I-V characteristic at a temperature of 29.8K, and this result was discussed based on a single electron tunneling process. To determine the energy diagram of the element, we also examined the dipole moment of rhodamine-dendorimer monolayer on a water surface, assuming a model that half of the rhodamine-dendorimer molecule is immersed in the water.

    有機半導体素子の多くは積層構造を持ち、その結果生じる素子内の界面は機能発現の重要な場となる。我々は、金属/有機膜界面における電荷注入、有機/有機界面における電荷蓄積特性に着目し、変位電流評価法(DCM)を用いた有機半導体素子の動作機構解析を行ってきた。本講演では、DCMを有機発光素子の動作・劣化機構解析に適用した結果について述べる。特に,積層型有機EL素子において,有機蒸着膜の自発的配向分極に起因した分極電荷が引き起こす電荷注入・蓄積現象と劣化特性について述べる.また,DCMの応用例として,電解質と注入キャリアとの相互作用により複雑な動作特性を示す電気化学発光セルの動作機構解析結果についても紹介する。

    We proposed a new type of single-molecular light-emitting device fabricated in a nanogap electrode, where the light emission is obtained through an energy transfer from host to guest molecules. The efficient ambipolar charge injection from similar electrodes (gold) was realized by using a blend film of a light-emitting semiconducting polymer and ionic liquid, that is, a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). In addition, due to the appropriate surface treatment for the SiO2 substrate, the active layer was successfully formed only on the electrodes and nanogap. Therefore the light emission is expected to occur at the nanogap. Finally, a current driven light emission from the nanogap LEC was successfully obtained.

    In order to understand and improve electronic devices using organic semiconductors, it is indispensable to answer basic questions about "carrier" to carry electricity; "How is carrier injected to organics?", "How is carrier extracted from organics?" etc. The mechanism of carrier injection and extraction has been so far discussed on the basis of the energy position of frontier molecular orbital of organic materials. In this study, the electronic structures of films and interfaces of several organic materials were investigated by our unique technique, high sensitivity photoelectron spectroscopy, and the mechanism was discussed on the basis of the observed density of states as well as frontier orbital positions.

    We have investigated the charge transport mechanisms of metal/organic monolayer/metal structures based on the observation of energy level alignment. The followings have been found; (i)contribution of the localized electronic state at the interface originating from the metal/molecule bonding, (ii)contribution of asymmetry factor of the molecular junction, (iii)contribution of different states depending on the polarity of the applied voltage. These contributions have not been considered sufficiently. Our results provide deeper understandings of the charge transport mechanisms of the molecular junctions.

    Findings of this study are as follows : 1) Several polar molecules that are commonly used in organic semiconductor devices spontaneously forms orientation polarization in their evaporated films. 2) The origin of interface charge at organic hetero interfaces is polarization charge originating from the orientation polarization. 3) Presence of polar molecules in the vicinity of organic hetero interface suppresses charge dispersion. 4) Light irradiation during the film formation of a polar molecule changes the charge accumulation property in the resultant devices, and causes a shorter lifetime. These findings indicate that permanent dipole moment is an important parameter that strongly affects on the device properties of organic semiconductor devices.

    In order to understand the mechanism of electronic devices using organic molecules, it is indispensable to elucidate how electrons are stored in molecules. So far, it has been investigated focusing on electronic states such as HOMO and LUMO. But other electronic states called gap s t at e s , whose density is less than one thousandth of HOMO, is also important for device physics. In this study, we have developed an apparatus to directly measure such gap states, and investigated the electronic structures of various organic semiconductors.

    We developed a visualization system of domain formation on a water surface, and the effect of electric quadrupole and chirality on a quantized domain formation has been revealed. Using time-resolved microscopic optical second harmonic generation system for direct visualization of carrier motion, we could analyze the carrier transport mechanism in organic devices. Finally, we could establish the evaluation method for flexible organic devices in terms of the dielectric physics, on focusing dielectric polarization phenomena.

    現在のシリコンテクノロジ-が超高純度単結晶の作製技術の進展とともに大きく花開いたのに対して、次世代エレクトロニクス材料として注目されている有機半導体は、超高純度試料を得ることが難しいという技術的な大きな課題を抱えている。本研究は、(i)アルキメデスポンプ型ゾーン精製法と(ii)2次元拡散型昇華精製法という2つの新しい超高純度精製手法の開発を試みることを目的とした。今年度は、H19年度に整備した従来型の精製装置を利用して、ノウハウを蓄積し、ルプレンの精製ならびに単結晶作成、ならびに有機EL材料の精製評価を行った。液体クロマトグラフィーやガスクロマトグラフィーで純度評価を行うとともに、トランジスター化して変位電流測定からキャリア注入やキャリアトラップ密度などに関して評価した。光電子収量分光により電子構造を評価するととも、飛行時間型移動度測定装置を作成しキャリア移動度測定も行った。これらの整備により、スタンダードな試料精製とそのデバイス特性・物性評価のサイクルができあがり、本格的な高純度化の環境構築が終了した。
    試料精製は、事前に予想した以上にノウハウと評価手法の確立に時間を要したため、当初計画より進行が遅れた。現在、新しい精製法に関して研究をすすめているところであり、高純度精製への努力を続けて行きたい。

    電極と分子との接触を制御した分子接合を作製し、その電気伝導特性を評価することは分子エレクトロニクスにおける重要な課題である。本研究では、電場印加によりナノギャップ電極へ選択的に測定対象分子を吸着させること、及び作製した分子接合の電気特性評価を目的としている。固体基板上に作製したナノギャップ電極を用いた分子接合では、トランジスタ特性や温度依存性の測定が可能であるが、ギャップ間分子の状態を評価することが難しかった。我々は、直径約6nmの金ナノ粒子をオリゴチオフェン3量体の自己組織化単分子膜で修飾した複合体(Au_x/3T)を用いることで、電子顕微鏡により観察可能な分子接合を作製し、その試料構造と電気伝導特性(トランジスタ特性、温度特性:11〜300K)を直接対応づけて調べることができた。
    少数Au_x/3Tで架橋した接合では、低温で明確な単一電子トンネル伝導が観測された。また、Au_x/3Tと電極との接触抵抗値は、これまでに別の手法を用いて測定された3Tのトンネル抵抗とよく一致した。このことは、本手法において分子数個程度のコンダクタンスが測定可能であることを示している。さらに、接合のコンダクタンスの温度特性から見積もられた活性化エネルギーは、金ナノ粒子のネットワーク構造に依存して変化することを見出した。これらの特性を金ナノ粒子のクーロン帯電効果を考慮することにより説明した。
    本手法は広く応用が可能であり、現在、光異性化反応を示す分子(ジアリールエテン誘導体)で修飾した金ナノ粒子の電気伝導特性を測定している。その他、有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子材料であるAlq_3を含んだ素子では、その特性がAlq_3層の配向分極に強く依存することを見出している。

    The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the linear and nonlinear dielectric properties of organic monolayer films by means of Maxwell-displacement current (MDC) and optical Second Harmonics Generation (SHG) measurement. The macroscopic dielectric properties such as linear and nonlinear dielectric constants are strongly related to the orientational order parameters of the constituent molecules. From this point of view, this investigation has been carried out on the basis of the idea of MDC measurement coupled with SHG measurement, proposed by the investigators.
    (1)Interfacial monolayer was treated as a flexible system. Direction of molecules is restricted by the presence of interface, and thus the specific polarizations such as spontaneous polarization and nonlinear polarization are induced. We investigate such polarization to evaluate the flexibility of the system. We can find the relationship between flexibility of films and the electrical property of them.
    (2)We used rod-like liquid crystalline molecules, biological molecules, chiral helix molecules and photo-isomers. Langmuir monolayers of these molecules were formed and measure the MDC and SHG. According to the result obtained from the MDC and SHG measurement, we can reveal the geometrical and electronic structure of monolayers. In particular, we successfully reproduce the pattern formation of molecular domains on a water surface.
    (3)For organic devices, such as organic field effect transistor and organic electro luminescent devices, we propose novel techniques for evaluating the electric field distribution in the devices and for probing the carrier motion in the devices. Also, we proposed a model which describes the operation of the organic field effect transistors on the basis of Maxwell-Wagner analysis.
