It can be seen that various pre-installed anchors have different stress states and damage states of anchors when the required yield strength is exerted. In order to reproduce this bond characteristic with adhesive post-installed anchors, it is necessary to control the individual bond stress distribution. In this study the adhesion performance is confirmed by performing the installation test, the pull-out test, and the bond test of the long post-installed anchor with the bond stress distribution controlled.

To investigate annual fluctuation of internal temperature and humidity of concrete members, we measured and analyzed them in outer wall and balcony slab in a 46-year-old RC building. The results showed that annual average of internal temperature is higher by 1~6 degree C than air temperature mainly because of solar radiation, which leads to decline of water content and average internal humidity. Increase of internal temperature is also responsible for temporary increase of internal humidity. Comparison of the humidity fluctuation at the same range of internal temperature can enable to evaluate fluctuation of water content.

In this study, we examined the evaluation method and evaluation criteria for evaluating the carbonation suppression effect of finishing materials used for the exterior of reinforced concrete buildings. We proposed a test method for carbon dioxide transmission rate of finishing materials and clarified the relationship with the carbonation ratio by the accelerated carbonation test while 52 weeks. In addition, based on the carbon dioxide transmission rate after the accelerated weathering test and the value of the carbonation ratio by previous studies, we proposed an evaluation criteria for the carbonation suppression effect in consideration of the deterioration of the finishing material.

  • DETERIORATION AND PREVENTIVE EFFECTS OF FINISHING MATERIALS AGAINST CARBONATION AND CORROSION OF REINFORCING BARS IN CONCRETE BASED ON THIRTY YEAR OUTDOOR EXPOSURE TEST USING MODEL BUILDING Reviewed

The durability of Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are basically determined by the presence or absence of steel corrosion. In order to prevent corrosion of steel in concrete, degradation factors such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and chloride ions need to be prevented from penetrating into concrete. In many RC buildings, finishes are applied to concrete surfaces, which prevent the penetration of degradation factors. While many studies have been reported on the preventive effects of finishing materials based on accelerated testing, little is based on the long-term exposure to the outdoor conditions. In this study, a model building made from concrete block specimens whose surfaces were coated with various finishing materials was constructed for the outdoor exposure test. After 30 years of outdoor exposure, the deterioration of finishes and their carbonation and corrosion inhibition effects were investigated.

The follow conclusions could be drawn based on this study:

    (1) As for the degradation status of finish materials, all finish materials undergo some kind of degradation after a long period of outdoor exposure. In the case of dirt and chalking, rainwater and other influences may improve the judgment of the deterioration status.

    (2) As for the carbonation depth, those with multiple layers of finishes, such as multi-layer type, those with low moisture permeability, such as waterproofing materials, and those with thick finishes are more effective in inhibiting carbonation. On the other hand, those with water repellency or air permeability will accelerate the carbonation.

    (3) Carbonation rate was less than 0.5 for coating materials, such as No.1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 16, 17, 21 and No.22. Because of the large variation, it was not possible to confirm the change in the carbonation protection effect of the finishing materials over time.

    (4) The corrosion depth was smaller in those with multiple layers of finishes, those with low moisture permeability, and those with thick finishes, as well as the carbonation depth.

    (5) The corrosion progress of concrete, containing chlorides, is inhibited by the use of finishing materials that inhibit the penetration of oxygen and moisture.

    (6) The relationship between the corrosion depth and the carbonation depth is that the carbonation progresses first and then the corrosion progresses.

To investigate the applicability of VAR-X model to estimating moisture condition of concrete exposed to ordinary natural environment, concrete internal humidity data reported previously were analyzed with weather data from Japan Meteorological Agency. The first 90 days were used for parameter estimation and the second 60 days were used to validate the model and predicted values. The results are summarized below.

    (1) Within the scope of this study, VAR-X model was applicable to the humidity data in the non-rainfall environment. VAR-X model was also able to predict the internal humidity for 60 days based on the estimated parameters and weather data (temperature and humidity), and the RMSE ranged from 0.87 to 2.04%.

    (2) It was judged that the VAR-X model was not appropriate to be applied to the humidity data of rainfall environment. The main reason for this is that the impact of rainfall was underestimated by assuming constant coefficients in the model.

    (3) The mechanisms of humidity fluctuation in concrete are discussed, which include the absorption and release of water and the temperature dependence of concrete water content. Based on the mechanism, difference between rainfall and non-rainfall environment was pointed out and the conditions under which the VAR-X model can be applied are discussed.

    (4) Methods of utilization and improvement of VAR-X model were discussed for cases where the moisture transfer characteristics of concrete changed and where the data increased or decreased in high humidity region. The advantages of time series analysis, including VAR-X model, were also pointed out in comparison with conventional physical models.

VAR-X model can predict humidity fluctuations in concrete using weather data when certain conditions are met. In

the future study, the model will be modified and its application to the durability evaluation of various materials will be investigated.

The aim of this study is to investigate the behaviors of corrosion-induced concrete spalling/falling from fair-faced RC walls and to propose risk assessment methodology for them based on visual inspection. Accelerated corrosion tests show that detectable concrete spalling/falling occurs when cover depth is under 30mm and that rapid increase of concrete spalling/falling follows increase of surface cracking. We propose a framework of criteria for detecting the symptom of the rapid increase, where deterioration degree of inspected walls is divided into 3 stages based on crack index Ic . The criteria for Ic is determined by average cover depth of the walls.

Carbonation of ALC panels progresses simultaneously throughout the whole section. Even with ceramic tiles laid on one side of the panel, ALC is carbonated to the back of the tiles by CO2 penetration from the other side. In this research, tiled ALC panels were subjected to accelerated carbonation followed by bond strength testing between ALC and tiling. As a result, it was found that carbonation of ALC does not directly cause tile spalling up to a carbonation degree of 89%.

One cause of time-related changes of ALC is the carbonation of tobermorite, the principal mineral of ALC, due to CO2 in the atmosphere. Tobermorite decomposes into CaCO3, SiO2, and H2O by carbonation, reducing the strength of ALC depending on the CPD. Time-related changes of ALC in the field can be affected by not only carbonation but also other multiple factors including chemical reaction with SOx, NOx, etc., repeated wetting and drying, and repeated freezing and thawing. For this reason, accelerated carbonation was conducted in this study to limit the factor in experimentally investigating the relationship between the CPD and strength changes of ALC.<br> The findings from this study are summarized as follows:<br> (1) Accelerated carbonation of 100 mm-thick ALC at 90% R.H. and 20°C with a CO2 concentration of 0.3% leads to differences of around 20% between the surface and mid-depth CPDs.<br> (2) The flexural strength and elastic modulus of ALC under accelerated carbonation retain the initial levels up to a CPD of 30% but decrease as the CPD increases thereafter. The declining trends of their residual ratios are linearly related to the CPD.<br> (3) The compressive strength of ALC under accelerated carbonation tends to exceed the initial level at an early stage of carbonation but decreases as the CPD increases after the CPD exceeds 50%. The declining trend of the residual compressive strength ratio is linearly related to the CPD.<br> (4) The flexure specimens of ALC 100 mm in thickness under accelerated carbonation are prone to the effect of internal strain due to the differences in the carbonation shrinkage along their depth.<br> (5) Accelerated carbonation up to a CPD of 30% consists of calcium carbonation by selective extraction of interlayer Ca ions from silicate double-chain structures. Therefore, this does not adversely affect the strength of ALC similarly to carbonation shrinkage.<br> (6) When the CPD exceeds 30%, carbonation shifts to decomposition due to Ca leaching from silicate double chain structures, which is the major cause of losses in the strength of ALC.

This study deals with the thermal properties of ALC panels subjected to accelerated carbonation. Difference in the thermal conductivity of ALC subjected to accelerated carbonation was marginal, scarcely affecting its heat insulation design values. Also, up to a degree of accelerated carbonation of 70%, the temperatures within ALC panels including steel reinforcement were comparable to those of uncarbonated ALC panels during fire resistance testing. Accelerated carbonation therefore causes no appreciable difference in the heat- and flame-shielding performance of ALC panels evaluated by fire resistance testing.

It has been reported that strength properties are changed by increasing heat, decreasing to a greater extent as the temperature rises. Since concrete subjected to high temperature heating can suffer strength loss, it can also be prone to cracking. However, there have been few reports on cracking in concrete under the effect of high temperature heating. When investigating the cracking behavior, it is considered important to evaluate not only the crack propagation properties but also crack initiation. Fracture mechanics was therefore employed in this study to investigate the fracture properties related to crack initiation and propagation in concrete. This paper reports on the influence of coarse aggregate types on the fracture properties of concrete subjected to high temperatures up to 800°C.<br> The fracture properties were evaluated based on tension-softening curves, determined by polylinear approximation through inverse analysis of load versus crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) curves. Specifically, the evaluation was carried out using the initial cohesive stress and fracture energy, the meanings of crack initiation and crack propagation.  Four different types of rock, sandstone, granodiorite, limestone and chert, were used as coarse aggregate. Concrete was proportioned with a water-cement ratio, target slump, and target air content of 57%, 18 cm, and 4.5%, respectively. The coarse aggregate content was kept constant at 356 liters/m3, while the slump and air content were adjusted by the admixture dosage. Specimens were demolded 2 days after placing, water-cured at 20°C up to an age of 26 weeks, and then subjected to heating followed by testing.<br> Two programmable muffle furnaces (inside W310 by D610 by H310 mm) with heaters on both side walls were used for heating. The target temperatures in the furnace were 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700 and 800°C. Unheated (20°C) specimens were also tested for comparison. The heating rate was 0.5°C/min. After attaining the target, the temperature was kept for 168 h and specimens were allowed to cool naturally to the level of outdoor air temperature.<br> Notched specimens of size of 100 × 100 × 120 mm were used for the wedge-splitting tests. A servo-hydraulic testing machine of closed-loop type was used. The rate of CMOD at the opening mouth was set to 0.02 mm/min.<br> The follow conclusions could be drawn on the basis of this study:<br> (1) The fracture surface areas of both concrete and mortar affected by high temperature heating linearly increase as the temperature rises. The fracture surfaces of concrete tend to be larger than those of mortar.<br> (2) The maximum load of sandstone on the L-CMOD curve scarcely changes up to 300°C, whereas those of other specimens are highest at 100°C. When comparing the maximum loads at the same heating temperatures, that of mortar is higher and that of limestone is lower than the others.<br> (3) The tension softening curves express generally decreasing cohesive stress with the increase in the COD. Amid these trends, the cohesive stress of mortar, whose initial cohesive stress is greater than those of concretes, decreases at a slower rate than those of concretes. As to concrete specimens, the reductions in the cohesive stress of sandstone, granodiorite, and chert take on similar trends, but that of limestone is faster than the other concrete specimens.<br> (4) At a heating temperature of 100°C, the initial cohesive stress of mortar significantly increases, while those of sandstone, granodiorite, and chert slightly increase and that of limestone slightly decreases. At higher temperatures, the initial cohesive stress decrease.<br> (5) Up to a heating temperature of 300°C, the fracture energy of all specimens increases but then tends to decrease as the heating temperature increases.

This paper describes the carbonation suppressive effect of varies coating materials for carbonated ALC. In contrast to carbonation of concrete members, that of ALC simultaneously proceeds within the panel and along the surfaces, as observed in a field survey of aged ALC. Therefore, carbonation-suppressing effect of varies coating materials for carbonated ALC was investigated by evaluation based on the degree of carbonation progression. The research results on the carbonation-suppressing effect of coating materials for concrete were found applicable to carbonated ALC panels.

This research work focuses on an index to the extent of the carbonation progress of ALC based on the carbonation-saturated condition. The progress of carbonation can serve as an index to changes in the strength of ALC panels over time. However, the proportion of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to the total calcium content in ALC at the time of saturation of carbonation reaction varies depending on its production history. Therefore, relative comparison between the degrees of carbonation of different types of ALC is unfeasible solely by comparison of the quantity of CaCO3 generated by carbonation. In contrast, the level of progress up to saturated carbonation in terms of CO2 can be used as a parameter for relative comparison. The authors therefore propose the use of the level of carbonation progress for estimating the strength loss. It was also found in this study that the strength of ALC subjected to carbonation in an accelerated environment is retained equal to the initial value up to a level of carbonation progress of around 50% but decreases to 70% with a level of carbonation progress of 100%.

ALC panels become the building members with necessary strength and durability by the autoclave cure. Autoclave cure of ALC takes approximately 10 h under the temperature of 180℃ and saturated steam pressure of 1MPa. It is thought that strain difference between ALC and reinforcing bar, as a result of temperature change, causes the internal stress in ALC panels. This study was conducted to clarify the existence of the internal stress in ALC panels.

The history of concrete is very old, mortar in ancient Egypt and Greece and concrete were used in ancient Roman times. Concrete used in ancient Roman times is now called "Ancient roman concrete". Formwork is required for the construction of concrete. Timber was used for the mold of ceiling or roof and piled up bricks for wall. Brick mold is the elements that compose concrete structures which used as well as current casting formwork and make the surface appear as a finishing of buildings, seen as a variety of finishing by means of stacking bricks. In this study, the architectural finishing of ancient roman concrete buildings was investigated based on field survey and literature review.

A study was made on various concrete specimens concerning their toughness recovery and durability retention. By an evaluation system of tension softening diagram of concrete, we studied the influence of factors of adapting mortar strength, fiber properties, crack-repairing effect and freeze-thaw load on the fracture properties of various concrete specimens. In the case of the crack repaired nonfibrous concrete, it showed a recovery in strength and toughness, but it deteriorated by the freeze-thaw test. On the other hand, in the case of fibrous concretes it showed a sufficient recovery in strength and toughness, and toughness was sustained by the freeze-thaw test.
