    The crystallinity of the carbon matrix and the surface oxygen groups of the electrode materials for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are considered to be important for enhancing the activity of the electrochemical reactions. We applied seamless carbon materials with consecutive macropores as a novel electrode material for the VRFB. We heat-treated the seamless carbon materials from 1200 °C to 2200 °C in an Ar atmosphere, then oxidized them in air at the appropriate temperature. Although the number of surface oxygen groups, which are believed to be the active sites, decreased at the higher crystallinity of the carbon matrix, the electrode activity was simply increased at the higher crystallinity of the carbon matrix. This result suggests the increased π electron density enhanced the ion exchange between the active materials and protons at the active sites due to the higher pK<sub>a</sub> value. Next, we examined the necessity of the surface oxygen groups for the material by the thermal decomposition in the Ar atmosphere. The current density significantly decreased after the thermal decomposition of the surface oxygen groups. Hence, the surface oxygen groups are believed to be essential for the electrochemical reactions.

    The development of active catalyst for ethanol electrooxidation is a key to improving the power output of direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). In this study, Pt-Sn was supported on SiO2 embedded carbon nanofiber as active anode catalyst for DEFC by expecting positive interactions between Pt-Sn-SiO2. The composite catalyst, Pt3Sn1/SECNF, showed highest mass activity for the ethanol electrooxidation, which was 3.7 times higher than the activity of the commercial Pt/C (Pt/C-com). The maximum power density of DEFC single cell with the composite catalyst was 3.5 times higher than that with Pt/C-com. (C) 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd.     The electro-oxidation of ethanol by the catalyst of PtRu nanoparticles supported on a TiO2-embedded carbon nanofiber (PtRu/TECNF), which has recently been proposed by the authors as a highly active catalyst for methanol oxidation, is investigated by cyclic voltammetry using a glassy carbon electrode and by operating a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) with the catalyst. The mass activity obtained from the cyclic voltammogram for the ethanol oxidation is compared to that for the methanol oxidation reported in our recent paper. The mass activity for the ethanol oxidation is comparable or slightly higher than that for the methanol oxidation, and the relationship between the TECNF composition, i.e., the Ti/C mass ratio, and the activity are also similar to that for the methanol oxidation. A DEFC fabricated with the PtRu/ TECNF shows a higher power output compared to that with the commercial PtRu/C catalyst. An analysis of the reaction products by a simple two-step reaction model reveals that the PtRu/TECNF increases the rate constant for the reaction steps from ethanol to acetaldehyde and subsequently to CO2, but decreases that from acetaldehyde to acetic acid. This means that the PtRu/TECNF improves not only the kinetics, but also the selectivity to acetaldehyde. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    窒素および遷移金属の中で安価な鉄と粉末活性炭を原料に用いた高活性な酸素還元反応(ORR)触媒の調整条件を実験的に検討した。具体的には、窒素源となるキトサンまたは尿素、鉄源となる鉄(II)フタロシアニンまたは塩化鉄(III)のそれぞれ原料から1種類ずつ組み合わせるとともに活性炭の有無に応じて所定の配合比となるように混合し、600℃~1000℃の不活性ガス雰囲気下で熱処理して得られた試料の酸素還元反応活性等を比較検討した。
    活性炭と鉄(II)フタロシアニンに、キトサンまたは尿素を加えた混合物を熱処理した試料のORR活性は熱処理温度に強く依存し、実験の範囲では800℃前後で最大となることが、対流ボルタンメトリーで得られた活性化支配電流や開始電位の比較検討からわかった。また、試料の窒素吸着法による物理性状の把握やX線光電子分光法による表面解析から、試料の比表面積ならびに試料表面に存在するピリジン型窒素や金属鉄の存在割合の熱処理温度依存性と両者のバランスが触媒活性の温度依存性に深く関係していることを示唆する結果が得られた。
    窒素源と鉄源だけで構成された混合物、そこへ活性炭を加えた混合物および活性炭のみのそれぞれを所定条件下で熱処理して得られた試料のORR活性等の相違に基づいて、活性炭に窒素源と鉄源の両者が加えられた混合物が熱処理されると活性炭の炭素骨格に窒素や鉄が取り込まれることで高活性化される可能性を示唆する結果が得られた。
    本年度に検討した6種類の配合条件の範囲では、活性炭に窒素源と鉄源の両者が添加されていれば、それらの原料によらず活性炭のみの場合に比べて飛躍的にORR活性が向上し、なかでも特に、鉄(II)フタロシアニンと尿素をそれぞれ鉄源および窒素源として活性炭と混合した系において最も高い活性が得られた。

    鉄(II)フタロシアニン、尿素および活性炭を原料とする系ならびにフェロシアン化物、イミダゾールおよび活性炭を原料に用いる系のそれぞれについて、配合方法および配合比を広範に変更して作製した触媒試料の回転電極法によるORR活性試験を行い、それぞれの系に対する最も高いORR活性が得られる作製条件を明らかにした。また、X線光電子分光法(XPS)による試料表面での鉄および窒素の化学結合状態とORR活性との関係に関する知見を得た。さらに、それぞれの原料系で得られた試料を触媒に用いて作製したエアカソードが、ラボスケール一槽式微生物燃料電池(SMFC)において利用可能であることならびにSMFCの出力性能と使用した触媒試料のORR活性の間に強い相関があることを明らかにした。
    前年度に考案したリニアスィープボルタンメントリー(LSV)を応用する簡易試験手法を用いて得られたバインダー材の種類や添加率を変更した触媒インクと電流密度の関係に基づいて、バインダー材の種類や添加率を変更したエアカソード作製してSMFCに設置して運転し、SMFCの出力性能と簡易試験での電流密度の大小に高い相関性があることなどを明らかにして、簡易試験法でバインダー配合条件を調査することの妥当性を実証した。また、ナフィオンをバインダーとした性能に相当するバインダー材やその添加率などの配合条件を実験的に明らかにした。
    前年度と同一素材であるが貫通方向の物質移動速度を最大で約2.5倍向上させた改良型一体化電極モジュールでの模擬含窒素有機性廃水による処理実験を行い、電気的出力や窒素処理性能が貫通方向の酸素透過速度に強く依存することを明らかにした。また、連続操作における流入負荷と電極モジュールの出力や処理性能の関係や性能の安定性に関する知見を実験的に得た。

    Activation by the electron beam and analysis of the active material for redox flow batteries were studied. The irradiated electrode showed higher activity compared to the pristine electrode and an electrode activated by ozone gas. The concentration of the active material at the electrode surface was visualized by the simulation. The author analyzed mass transport by using full cell and symmetric cell, and found the active material in negative half-cell controlled the rate of mass transport in the full cell. The obtained results are useful to design efficient redox flow batteries.

    A low-cost and high-activity ORR catalysts were prepared by nitrogen-doping of powdered activated carbon. Optimum and/or acceptable conditions for making the cost-effective air breathing cathodes were obtained experimentally such as the N-dope activated carbon catalyst loading, lesser content of Nafion, possible alternative binder materials for making the catalyst layer and stainless-steel woven wire meshes as alternative base electrode instead of conventional carbon materials. Improved performance of a long-term nitrogen removal and power generation was demonstrated in MFC equipped with the air cathode covered by a separator with pre-enriched nitrifying biofilm. The better materials as separators in this system were also obtained. An electrode unit, a set of the air cathode, a separator with pre-enriched nitrifying biofilm, carbon felt anode and current collectors is assembled and was demonstrated simultaneous removal of organic matter and nitrogen with generating electric power.

    With the aim of constructing a fuel electrode catalyst layer that dramatically improves the power output of a direct methanol fuel cell, we investigated the introduction of surface treatment for GO as a 2D catalyst support and the composite with nano-sized cocatalysts and spacer materials. By using RGOA, which is obtained by heat-treatment of GO aerogel at 200 degree C, as the support, we succeeded in increasing the catalytic utilization of PtRu. This is due to the decrease in oxygen functional groups on the surface of GO. Furthermore, the composite of PtRu / RGOA with Ti4O7 fine particles showed almost 100% catalyst utilization and mass activity about twice as high as PtRu/RGOA. It was demonstrated that high catalyst layer activity is realized by adjusting the mixing ratio of PtRu/RGOA and Ti4O7 fine particles.

    In this study, developments of composite catalysts with the interaction between intermetallic compound-metal oxide-carbon. The composite catalyst, PtPb (intermetallic compound) supported on titanium oxide embedded carbon nanofiber (TECNF), was prepared. Ethanol electrooxidation activity for PtPb/TECNF, Pt/TECNF, Pt/C (commercial catalyst) was measured. The mass activity at 0.70 V vs. RHE for PtPb/TECNF was almost six times higher than that for Pt/C. The anti-CO property by the interaction for PtPb/TECNF was suggested by CO stripping measurement. The power density of a direct ethanol fuel cell for PtPb/TECNF was higher than that for Pt/C.

    CO pulse adsorption experiment suggested that the cause of the high activity of PtRu/TECNF catalyst for methanol oxidation reaction is CO spillover from the noble metal surface to the support. TCCNF obtained by oxidizing the TiO2 precursor dispersed on the CNF surface and CeO 2 embedded CNF have been proposed as catalyst support of PtRu nanoparticles as an alternative support of TECNF. It was found that the catalyst layer of PtRu/TECNF becomes thick with a higher porosity than that in the case of PtRu/C. The optimum content of PtRu in PtRu/TECNF was 30 wt%, and the DMFC using it was far higher than the commercially available catalyst of 174 mW/cm2.
