    This study sought to determine the impact of changes in serve performance (relationship between speed, spin rate, reproducibility, and impact height) on world rankings for one top-level Japanese tennis player in 2017, when he became the All Japan Student Champion, and in 2022, when he represented Japan in the Davis Cup and won the ITF tournament (M25 Monastir: 10 Jan - 16 Jan 2022). This study clarifies the impact of changes in serve performance on world rankings in 2022. The results showed that, among the three types of serves (flat, slice, and kick), there were higher values for slice and kick in 2022 compared to 2017. Higher ball speed values were found for flat in 2022 and lower values for slice and kick in 2017. In 2022, all serve heights were higher, resulting in an increase in the flat success rate, which had the lowest reproducibility. These results suggest that longitudinal measurement and evaluation of the relationship between speed, spin rate, reproducibility, and impact height when serving is important for improving competitive performance.

    <p>This study attempted to comprehensively quantify (1) the ball speed and (2) spin rate of the serve and (3) the number of trials required to achieve the task in Japanese top-level tennis players (male and female professionals, male and female student athletes, male and female junior athletes, male and female wheelchair athletes). The purpose was to use the quantified data as a new evaluation index for serve performance. The subjects were instructed to hit the flat, slice, and kick serves into the designated area. The subjects attempted each type of serve towards the target area until five serves for each type successfully landed in that area. As a result, the approximate curve obtained from the speed and spin rate of the serve (flat, slice, kick) tended to be located in the upper right of the figure (X-axis: speed, Y-axis: spin rate) at the highest competition level. In addition, from the number of trials required to complete the task, we were able to obtain materials for inferring players' serving skills. Based on these findings, data feedback to the players would be important to promote self-understanding of their serving skills with correcting the gap between the players' subjective and objective evaluation. This study suggests an index that can contribute to improving the serve performance of not just top-level tennis players but also all recreational tennis players.</p>

    This study aimed to the heart rate of a complete match from Japanese elite blind tennis players, and the objective is to make it basic material of a scientific study of blind tennis.1) The seven game match (score 4-3) took 27 minutes 00 seconds. Time of ball-in-play was 9 minutes 21 seconds. A total of 38 points were played and the average time to complete 1 point was about 18.1 seconds.2) Compared to the Kei Nishikori vs James Blake match at the 2008 Delray Beach ATP Tour Tennis Tournament, this blind tennis match had the 1point get average time for 7.1seconds longer .3) The average heart rate of subject A in this entire Blind Tennis match was 153.8 BPM (a standard deviation ±19.7), and the highest heart rate was for 184 BPM.4) The exercise intensity was measured from 7 minutes after the start of the match to the end of the match. Subject A's heart rate intensity was observed to vary between 80-90% of maximum intensity for the duration of match, while subject B's intensity varied between 70-90%.Given the heart beat response, it is clear that the physical load incurred on the Japanese elite blind tennis players during this match was very high.

  • A Comparison Between Australia and Japan According to ATP Rankings Reviewed

    This research examined Australia and Japan in the ATP rankings and the international tournaments held in the past 20 years. Australia has seen a lot of successful players in the 1990s, this number decreased for a while, and has increased again since 2010. There were few Japanese players who reach the top 100 in the 1990s, but has seen since 2009. International tournament competition number are increasing since 2004 in both countries. Australia had a friendly system and education, when encouraged players to compete in the tournament. Japan is strengthening players due to the increase of the futures tournament and increased the ATP rankings holders.

    <p> 近年、テニスの打球方向予測において、熟練者は対戦相手のボールやラケットなどの局所的な(local)運動情報に注意を向けすぎずに、全身運動を俯瞰的に捉える大域的な(global)知覚方略を利用することが報告されている(Huys他、2009)。本研究ではこの知覚方略の特徴を検討するため、テニス熟練者がどの程度正確に動作を認識しているのか(動作認識)を、スローモーション再生呈示により明らかにすることを目的とした。一般に、スローモーション再生呈示は、通常よりも対象動作がゆっくりと観察できるため、その動作特性を正確に認識する効果があるとされている。実験ではスロー再生(等速、0.75倍速、0.5倍速、0.25倍速)したフォアハンドストローク動作を呈示刺激として、打球方向の予測判断(左・右)ならびに動作認識(ボールと体幹中心の位置評価)について熟練度の効果を調べた。実験の結果、スローモーション再生呈示は予測判断の成績を変えるほどの効果はなかったが、熟練者の体幹中心に対する動作認識を改善させた。以上から、熟練者の利用する大域的な知覚方略は、体幹の動作を的確に見極めることが鍵となる可能性が示唆された。</p>
