    To propose a test method for evaluating the filled hole compressive (FHC) property of laminated carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs), compression tests were conducted that simultaneously recorded stress-strain and recorded high speed photographic images. The effects of “clearance ratio,” which is defined as the ratio between the diameters of the metal inserting pin and specimen hole, was experimentally investigated. Despite exhibiting similar final fracture appearances, specimens with different clearance ratios demonstrated distinct fracture processes. These differences were captured through synchronized high-speed photography and stress-strain evaluation. The strain distribution and local fracture behavior varied significantly with clearance ratio. Based on these findings, a appropriate strain gage location was proposed for evaluating the FHC fracture behavior.

    This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation into the strength properties of joint adhesives employed in flame-applied surface treatment, a critical process in adhesive bonding techniques. Among the commercial surface treatment techniques, this study focuses on Itro treatment to analyze the silica deposition flame-applied surface treatment method. Dispersed conditions of silica particles on surfaces, tensile strength, and microscopic fractures are observed using focused ion beam and scanned probe microscopy for varying numbers of Itro treatment passes. Adhesive joint strength either improves or remains constant after 1 or 6 Itro treatment passes compared to non-Itro treatment. In contrast, strength decreases after 30 or 60 Itro treatment passes. During Itro treatment, silica particles form a silica layer with a cohesive fracture mode. The strength of the silica layer is estimated to be lower than the interface strength between the adherend and adhesive.

    The open-hole compressive (OHC) strength is used as a design allowable for aircraft structure designs that use CFRP laminates. In many cases, fillers such as fasteners are inserted into the holed CFRP parts of actual structures. The filled-hole compressive (FHC) strength, which is higher than the OHC strength, has potential as a design allowable for lighter structural designs. However, the FHC strength depends on the gap (clearance) between the CFRP laminate filler and the hole walls, and the mechanisms that cause its value to change are still unclear. This is a significant issue in standardizing test methods and in estimating mechanical joint strengths. In this study, we observed the changes in the FHC strength with changes in the clearance and explored the mechanism causing the increased FHC strength. We confirmed that the FHC strength increased as the clearance decreased. At the same time, we also confirmed that the FHC strength increase was mitigated when the clearance fell below a certain level. We determined that the FHC strength was governed by the transmitted load, which changes with the amount of clearance and with the contact area fracture state of the CFRP laminates.

    When structures and products made with CFRP laminate composite plates get some local damage accidentally then need to be repaired, the scarf repair is done generally.<br>In this study, the influence of the difference in the processes of scarf repair used in the structures of CFRP laminate composites on the tensile and compressive strength of the repaired parts were investigated and discussed. Two processes of scarf repair were used. One (ideal repair) was carried out under a sufficient condition having cleanroom and autoclave, etc. in a repair factory of aircraft maker and other (field repair) was done using some simple instruments in a laboratory expecting a field repair. Two ideal repair models (one of them was given an impact damage to its repair part) and one field repair model were prepared and each repair models were examined by tensile test and compressive test under the condition of room temperature in air, these strengths and fracture modes were discussed comparing among the three kinds of repair models. The following results are obtained.<br>⑴ The field repair model showed lower tensile strength by about 18 % compared with that of the ideal repair model. ⑵ For the ideal repair model with impact damage, in tensile test, its damage starting from local damage part by impact load generates the separation in adhesive layer. Thus, its tensile strength decreases by about 20 % compared with the ideal repair model without impact damage. ⑶ Both of two ideal repair models with/without impact damage and a field repair model showed almost same values in these buckling stress and compressive failure stress. ⑷ In case of that the compressive load acts in practical structure with scarf repair, the design of scarf repair should be considered with the influence of the load due to the out-of-plane deformation, which leads to separation in the adhesive layer.

    Impact damage characteristics and compression after edge-on impact (CAEI) strength of CFRP laminates were experimentally investigated. CFRP laminates with various thicknesses and stacking sequences were prepared. Impact tests with a constant energy level were performed using the special impact fixtures. The damaged areas and their shapes after the impact on the CFRP laminates were evaluated using an ultrasonic C-scanning machine. It was observed that the CFRP thickness affected the impact delamination shape, which was expressed by the longitudinal (<i>w</i>) and transverse-direction (<i>d</i>) extensions. The delamination was propagated in the longitudinal direction when the CFRP laminates were thinner. After the C-scope observations of the delamination, compression strength tests were performed. The CAEI strength degraded when the delamination shape factor (<i>w</i>/<i>d</i>) was increased. A correlation between the CAEI strength and increased volume of the CFRP laminates was also observed after the edge-on impact.

    Recently, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) composite material has been applied to large-scale structures such as large scale wind turbine blade and large pressure vessel not only aircraft structure. In addition, when considering the application of the CFRP composites also to large-scale structures in sea water it is needed to investigate the influence of sea water absorption characteristics of the CFRP composites on the strength properties.<br>In this study, we conducted tensile strength tests and fatigue strength tests in conditions of air atmosphere and sea water atmosphere by using specimens with a circular hole made of CFRP laminate composite plate and we have investigated the following strength properties of CFRP laminate composite, that is, (1) the influence of artificial sea water absorption on the tensile strength, (2) the fatigue strength in air and in artificial sea water at room temperature.<br>From these test results, we have obtained the basic data of CFRP laminate composite to be utilized to various large-scale structures.

    Recently, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) composites are applied to the aircraft structure and also the pressure equipment such as pressure vessels and pressure pipes, etc. In particular, CFRP composites used in the aircraft structure are exposed to a low temperature environment at high altitudes. Nevertheless, there is not enough opened public data of CFRP composite material for the fatigue strength properties under various environments including low temperature below 0℃. In addition, it is useful to investigate also the influence of sea water absorption characteristics of the CFRP composites on the strength properties since CFRP composites are expected its high corrosion resistance.<br>In this study, we conducted static tensile test and fatigue strength test at a low temperature of −54℃ by using specimens with a circular hole made of CFRP laminate composite plate soaked in artificial sea water enough and also carried out observation of the fatigue damage progression in the low and room temperature environments. That is, we have investigated the following strength properties of CFRP laminate composite, ⑴ the influence of artificial sea water absorption on the tensile strength at low temperature −54℃, ⑵ the fatigue strength of the specimens absorbing artificial sea water at low temperature −54℃, ⑶ the fatigue damage progression behavior observed with soft X−ray inspection.<br>From these test results, we have obtained the basic data of CFRP laminate composite to be utilized to various large-scale structures.

    Recently, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) composites are applied to the pressure equipment such as pressure vessels and pressure pipes, etc., not only aircraft structure. If these pressure equipment and aircraft structures made of CFRP laminate composite material are damaged, the bonded repair is applied as one of the repair treatments.<br>In this study, focusing on the repair treatment with scarf joint which is a bonded repair method and used also for the repair of the aircraft structure damage, the tensile strength and compressive strength of the bonded scarf joints were examined by using the two-dimensional scarf joint specimens which simulate the cross-section of an actual repaired part with scarf joint with flat conical shape, and the effects of the scarf angle, doubler patches and impact load on these strengths were investigated. The following results are obtained.<br>⑴ The tensile strengths of the bonded CFRP scarf joint with scarf angle 3 and 4.5 degrees are about 50% of that of CFRP laminate composite base material. ⑵ The doubler patches are effective in the tensile strength improvement of bonded CFRP scarf joint with scarf angle 3 degrees, the tensile strength of the scarf joint is reinforced about 10 % by attaching doubler patches but there is no improving effect of doubler patches on the compressive strength. ⑶ The bonded CFRP scarf joints with scarf angle 3 degrees is almost not affected negatively on the tensile strength by impact loading.

    Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) laminate composites have superior characteristics such as high mechanical strength and lightness. However, CFRP laminate composites are not homogeneity material like metals, therefore, these show unique damage and fracture form, that is, various damages, for example cracks in base material (plastic), these in fiber bundle and interface separations in fiber bundle, affect mutually, then CFRP laminate composites lead to fracture in the end.<br>In this study, the fatigue strength of CFRP laminate composite with circular hole are examined with different temperatures, high temperature (82℃), room temperature (25℃) and low temperature (-54℃). In addition, by using the specimens with a circular hole of the CFRP laminate composite with cumulative fatigue damage, the observation of the fatigue damage progression by the soft X-Ray inspection and the optical microscope observation of the cross-section of the specimens in which the layer interface separations and the separations in the layer generate were carried out. The results are following,<br>⑴ When the maximum stress of cyclic stress is large, the case of low temperature (-54℃) showed short fatigue life compared with the cases of 82℃ and 25℃. ⑵ In case of small maximum stress, the fatigue life is longer the temperature is lower in order of 82℃, 25℃ and -54℃. ⑶ When temperature is low, although many cracks in base metal or fiber bundle generate and exist in CFRP laminate composite, these cracks are prevented from developing to the layer interface separation or the separation in layer.

Furthermore, the residual tensile strength and the residual fatigue strength after impact loading were evaluated by using the bonded scarf joint specimen with impact loading damage. The following results are obtained.<br>⑴ Larger scarf angle of the bonded CFRP scarf joint has lower tensile strength. ⑵ The doubler patches are effective in the tensile strength improvement of bonded CFRP scarf joint, the tensile strength of the scarf joint is reinforced about 7 to 10 % by attaching doubler patches. ⑶ σ<sub>R</sub>−N<sub>f</sub> curves for base material of CFRP laminate composite, the bonded CFRP scarf joints with scarf angle 2 degrees and 6 degrees, and the scarf joints of scarf angle 2 degrees attached doubler patches were obtained. ⑷ The tensile strength of the bonded CFRP scarf joint with scarf angle 2 degrees decreases about 6 to 9% after impact loading with 30.5 J. ⑸ The effect of impact loading with 30.5 J on the fatigue strength of the bonded CFRP scarf joints, which scarf angle is 2 degrees, with and without doubler patches was within the variability of the measured data. ⑹ In case of the bonded repair treatment with the scarf joint, the scarf angle as small as possible is preferred from comparison between the scarf angle 2 degrees and 6 degrees.

    A highly efficient joining method using ultrasonic welding is required for the manufacturing and processing of thermoplastic carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures. Herein, the application of resin mesh as a sheet-like energy director is proposed, and its feasibility is assessed. The relationship between the welding conditions and the tensile shear strength was investigated using single lap joint specimens prepared by ultrasonic welding. The fracture surface observations indicated that resin mesh melting occurred from the end of the specimen, whereas the unmelted zone remained at the center of the welding surface. It was necessary to supply a sufficient amount of resin to the welding surface and select a resin mesh suitable for the welding conditions to minimize variations in the bonding strength. Under the welding conditions used herein, the specimens with the coarsest resin mesh showed an average tensile shear strength of 34 MPa and a coefficient of variation of 0.1. From these results, it was concluded that the application of a sheet-like energy director for the ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic CFRP is a promising method to achieve a practical level of bonding strength.

    ITRO treatment is one of surface treatments based on flame treatment, which is used liquid petroleum gas containing silane compounds, and forms silica deposits on substrates. This treatment brings high adhesion strength for aircraft coatings with only one-time treatment. ITRO treatment could be promising technology in aviation industry because that is quick, easy, clean and less costly process compared with traditional surface treatment processes such as anodizing or chemical conversion process. However, few studies have focused on ITRO treatment and the bond mechanism of ITRO treatment has not been clarified so far. In this research, the bond mechanism of ITRO treatment was investigated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The analysis of the non-coated samples revealed that silica, absorbed water and SiOH groups exist in the silica deposits on the aluminum substrates and the spectral absorbance of them increases as the number of treating increases. The SiOH groups could be the source of hydrogen bonds and the amount of them depends on the number of treating. Furthermore, the analysis of the coated samples revealed spectral peaks of ester and ether groups in the coating materials shift to low wavenumber. This means new hydrogen bonds were formed inside the coating materials around the silica deposits formed by ITRO treatment.

    Impact damage characteristics and compression after impact (CAI) strength of curved CFRP laminates were experimentally investigated. Various curved and flat CFRP laminates were prepared with special impact fixtures and compression loading fixtures. Impact tests with a range of energy levels were executed on the prepared laminates. Damage areas and their shapes after impact on the curved CFRP laminates were measured by an ultrasonic C-scanning machine. It was found that the CFRP curvature affected the impact delamination shapes (aspect ratio: <i>AR</i>). The delamination propagation direction followed the specimen curvature which was increased with increasing <i>AR</i>. After C-scope observations of delamination, compression strength tests were performed. CAI strength degradation was detected on several curvatures of 0.004 and 0.01. To further investigate the relation between CAI strength and delamination shapes, we calculated a shape factor (<i>S</i>) that was considered for a rectangular plate in the buckling equation. Using the actual delamination sizes as the plate size parameters in the rectangular plate buckling equation, <i>S</i> was calculated. The impact energy and curvature as functions of <i>S</i> showed very similar trends when correlated to their CAI strength test results. The results presented herein suggest that the CAI strength of curved specimens is closely related to their delamination sizes and shapes that are determined by the curvatures in the specimens.

    Pulsed laser surface treatment was applied to carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) to enhance the work efficiency as well as to establish the stable clean process of surface treatment during the bonding process of CFRP structures. Surface analyses were conducted to CFRP treated by various laser conditions in order to find the optimal laser process. Adhesively bonded specimens were fabricated using CFRPs subjected to laser treatment, and adhesive strength of CFRPs bonded with adhesive films was evaluated compared with the abrasive paper treatment. Surface conditions, adhesive strength and adhesive fracture mode depended on the treatment parameters, and adhesive strength similar to abrasive paper treatment could be obtained in the specimens with appropriate laser treatment. It was concluded that laser surface treatment can be applied to the surface treatment process of CFRP bonded structures.

    To propose a test method for the out-of-plane tensile modulus of laminated carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, 3-point bending tests using a laminated CFRP with the span direction coinciding with out-of-plane (through-the-thickness) direction were performed. It was demonstrated that the apparent bending modulus depends on the length of span to thickness ratio (<i>L/t</i>) and the tensile modulus <i>E</i> to shear modulus <i>G</i> ratio (<i>E</i>/<i>G</i>). Sensitivity analyses were performed to select the length of span to thickness ratio in order to evaluate the bending modulus near material modulus. Consequently, it is predicted that the bending modulus performed with the <i>L</i>/<i>t</i>>25 bending specimen is equivalent to tensile modulus, if the apparent bending modulus were evaluated from 1 to 15 GPa, while modified equations for the out-of-plane modulus of QI-CFRP laminates obtained by three-dimensional laminate theory were also derived. This modification took stress condition in consideration of the small in-plane size like bending specimens into account. Moreover, it is demonstrated that apparent bending moduli were evaluated between upper- and lower-bound solutions.     In this study, a newly developed ultrasonic wave-visualization technique was applied to scarf-repaired CFRP laminate with the artificial defect and an actual scarf-repaired part. The technique enables to visualize ultrasonic wave propagation and to detect damages by using the wave-visualization technique. First, impact damages in the CFRP joint specimens simulating scarf repair was observed by ultrasonic inspection and cross-sectional microscopy after impact test. Secondly, CFRP scarf-joint specimen with the artificial defect was inspected by using the wave-visualization technique. As a result, scattering and velocity change of visualized ultrasonic wave were observed at the damage area in scarf-repaired composite. Finally, an impacted scarf-repaired specimen was inspected by using the wave-visualization technique. The damage area was detected by visualized ultrasonic wave propagation. These results demonstrate that the wave-visualization technique is quite useful in damage detection of scarf-repaired composites.

    In this paper, the propagation behavior of elastic waves generated in CFRP laminates by pulsed laser was investigated both experimentally and analytically. First, the anisotropy in amplitudes of elastic waves generated by pulsed laser were measured experimentally. The anisotropic property was found to vary with different frequencies. Secondly, elastic wave propagation behavior was evaluated by finite element analysis. In this analysis, two cases in which CFRP has anisotropic and isotropic thermal expansion properties were compared with experimental results. As a result, tendency in analytical results of CFRP with anisotropic thermal property agreed well with the experimental results, which confirms that the anisotropic thermal expansion property of CFRP laminates causes the anisotropy in amplitudes of elastic waves generated in CFRP laminates by pulsed laser. Finally, the influence of coatings on anisotropic behavior of elastic waves generated in CFRP laminates by pulsed laser was investigated by wave measurement test of CFRP specimens with coatings used for outer skins of aircrafts.

    The effect of specimen size on the tensile strength of a unidirectional carbon/epoxy laminate in the fiber direction is systematically examined. For this purpose, static tension tests are performed on one-, two- and three-dimensional geometrically similar unnotched specimens of the unidirectional CFRP laminate, respectively. The comparison of the results on 1D-geometrically similar specimens indicates that the longitudinal tensile strength tends to decrease as the thickness of specimen increases. In contrast, the longitudinal tensile strength of 2D-geometrically similar specimen tends to increase as the width of specimen increases. 3D-geometrically similar specimens exhibit substantially no scale effect, suggesting that 1D and 2D scale effects almost cancel each other out. Development of a phenomenological model that can describe the multi-dimensional scale effects is also attempted.

    The effect of water uptake on fatigue lives of a woven fabric CFRP quasi-isotropic laminate under constant amplitude loading at different stress ratios has been examined. First, constant amplitude fatigue tests are performed at room and high temperatures on the specimens immersed in hot water until saturation and on the specimens kept in a dry place. Experimental results show that the fatigue lives of wet specimens are shorter than those of dry specimens, regardless of stress ratio and test temperature. The degree of reduction in fatigue strength due to water uptake is about eleven percent at most, that is independent of stress ratio. Then, the full shapes of the constant fatigue life (CFL) diagrams for the laminate in dry and wet environments, respectively, at different temperatures are identified on the basis of the fatigue test data obtained at different stress ratios. It is demonstrated that they are characterized by asymmetry, nonlinearity and gradual change in shape. Finally, the anisomorphic CFL diagram approach for composites that was developed in the earlier study is tested on the dry and wet CFRP laminates at different temperatures. It is shown that the anisomorphic CFL diagram approach is successfully applied for predicting the CFL diagrams and thus the S-N relationships for the woven CFRP laminate, regardless of moisture content and test temperature.

    An experimental investigation on the mechanical properties of CFRP scarf joints with impact damage was carried out to understand the relationship between scarf angle and impact characteristics. This research shows the effect of the scarf angle on various characteristics, tensile strength, impact damage, and tensile after impact (TAI) strength. These characteristics were investigated experimentally about four scarf angles of 2º, 3º, 4.5º, and 6º. For the non-damaged specimen tensile test, it was found that the tensile strength decreases as the scarf angles increase. It was thought that the reason of decreasing of tensile strength was decrease of bonded area of scarf joint due to increase of scarf angle. Tensile fracture mode of non-damaged specimens were changed from net tension failure mode to adhesive failure mode as the scarf angles increase. As a result of the cross-sectional observation after impact test, impact damage area was increased by the increasing of scarf angle. At the higher scarf angle, debonding of adhesive layer was increased, but damage of laminate was decreased. It was thought that the damage decreasing of laminate was affected by the energy absorption due to significant debonding in the adhesive layer. For the damaged specimen tensile test, residual tensile strength decreased as the scarf angles increase. It was thought that the residual tensile strength of the scarf joints was affected by the increase of debonding in the adhesive layer at higher scarf angle.

    This paper examines the fundamental fracture behavior of CFRP laminate due to lightning strikes. In order to clarify the influence of lightning parameters and specimen size variations, the comparative results of performing artificial lightning strike testing on a series of laminated composite specimens has been explored. For the artificial lightning strike testing, the high-strength/middle-modulus graphite/epoxy composite of IM600/133 is selected as a typical aerospace grade material. The damage to the CFRP laminate was assessed by using visual inspection, ultrasonic inspection, micro X-ray inspection, and sectional observation. The test results clarified that the damage mode can be categorized into three different damage mode of fiber damaged area, resin deterioration area, and internal delaminations. And the damage progress is governed by the strong electrical and thermal orthotropic properties of CFRP laminates. As a result of damage size evaluation, it is confirmed that the lightning parameters which define impulse waveform show strong relationship with certain damage modes though the specimen size and thickness variation hardly affect damage size due to lightning strike.

    In this paper, artificial lightning strike tests and residual compression tests were performed in accordance with Compression After Impact (CAI) test standard for two kinds of Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) using unidirectional prepregs, IM600/133 and T700SC/EP827, which have different electrical and mechanical property. NDT results after the artificial lightning tests show in-plane size of delamination damage in two kinds of CFRP caused by artificial lightning strikes differed due to difference of interlaminar fracture toughness. On the other hand, despite significant difference of resistivity in out-of-plane direction of the two materials, out-of-plane size of delamination damage was approximately on a level. Therefore it is suggested that it was more influenced by electrical dielectric breakdown field and thermal property than electrical resistivity. Though residual compressive strength after artificial lightning strike (CAL strength) of IM600/133, which consist of high toughness, resin was higher than T700SC/EP827, ratio of CAL strength and None-hole Compressive (NHC) strength were almost same.

    In this research, CFRP scarf repair panels were tested to evaluate the tensile mechanical properties and impact characteristics. CFRP scarf repair panels were prepared to simulate the assumed three different situations. These situations consist of two different scarf repair methods and impact damage case which are autoclave repair, heat blanket repair, and impact damage case. As the result, these strengths are not recovered in all situations, however, stiffness was recovered in all situations. Moreover, the strength of heat blanket repair and impact damage case were reduced compared with autoclave repair.

    Carbon Nanofiber (CNF) dispersed CFRP is expected to the application for the lightning protection systems of aerospace planes. In this paper, fiber volume fraction measurement and volume resistivity measurement, artificial lightning strike tests of CNF dispersed CFRP laminates are performed to investigate the relationship between electrical characteristic, lightning damage behavior and CNF content. In the range of this study, the effect of V_f is dominant on electrical characteristic and electrical improvement doe to CNF is not enough. On the other hand, delamination area is apparently decreasing with CNF content increasing. Therefore, it is suggested that not only volume resistivity but also dielectric breakdown field strength, heat transfer properties and interlaminer fracture strength affect lightning strike damage behavior.

    Tensile tests were carried out using specimen similar to repair part of the CFRP structural component of airplane. The specimen were made by two different methods, that is, one is "autoclave repair specimen" performed by exclusive equipment of the airplane body maker, and the other is "heat blanket repair specimen" by manual labor at operation spot. In addition, "autoclave repair specimen" with impact damage was also tested.
    As a result, the influences of repair method and impact damage on tensile strength of scarf repair part were clarified.

    Effects of the uptake of water on the constant amplitude tension-tension fatigue behavior of a plain-woven CFRP quasi-isotropic laminate in the fiber direction are examined. First, fundamental features in the uptake of water by CFRP specimens are studied. For this purpose, specimens are immersed in hot water at a constant temperature of 71℃, and their weight gain by water uptake is measured over the period of study. Overall, two different kinds of water uptake behavior of specimens are observed. One is roughly Fickian in nature, and the water uptake tends to saturate in 1000 hours at the level of 1.0% weight gain. In the other case, the weight of specimens immersed in hot water exceeds 1.5% weight gain. Detailed observation of the latter specimens reveals that an artificial material like fur has adhered on the surface of those specimens, and the anomalous increase in weight gain might be ascribed to the adhesion of fur. Next, static tension tests are performed at room temperature on the specimens immersed in hot water until saturation and on the specimens that are not exposed to water environment. The specimens immersed in water show slightly higher tensile strength than the specimens with no water uptake. Then, tension-tension fatigue tests are carried out using those wet and dry specimens. It is demonstrated that the fatigue lives of wet specimens are shorter than those of dry specimens.

    In this paper, artificial lightning strike tests for Cup Stucked Carbon Nanofiber (CNF) dispersed CFRP are performed to investigate the applicability for lightning protection systems. The result of visual inspection and NDT shows that the size and thickness of internal damage comprise of delamination and matrix cracks are affected by changing of CNF content, though the surface damage of fiber damaged area and resin deterioration area are hardly affected. Furthermore, in order to investigate the characteristic of residual compression strength, compression test for damaged laminate were performed in conformity with SACMA CAI test standard. As a result, it is confirmed that the residual compression strength are improved with increasing of the CNF content.

    Tension and compression tests of scarf joints were conducted to evaluate the effect of angle of scarf. Impact loadings were applied for some specimens prior to the residual compression and tension test of scarf joints. Such scarf joints were experimentally investigated by using three variations of scarf angles of 3, 4.5, and 6 degrees. The impact loadings at the center of the specimen were with two different energy level for tension specimen, and three for compression. As a result, the statical tensile and compressive strengths of non-damaged scarf joint decreased as the scarf angle increased. The strengths of scarf joint compared with the parent specimen are more significantly decreased in tension than in compression. For the small angle of scarf the impact damage and the residual strength of scarf joints were measured to be similar to those of the parent material. Whereas for the large scarf angle, the delamination of the adhesive layer of scarf joint increased remarkably, then, the residual strength of scarf joint decreased. It is obvious that the delamination of adhesive layer affected the residual strength of scarf joints under tension and compression.

    Experimental investigations have been made on the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G<SUB>IC</SUB>) of stitched CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminates. The G<SUB>IC</SUB> of stitched CFRP laminates fabricated by resin transfer molding (RTM) and stitching with five kinds of stitch thread thicknesses, 400d (denier), 600d, 800d, 1000d, and 1200d were experimentally obtained by double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. Interlaminar tension tests for stitched CFRP laminates for a specimen containing only one stitch thread were also carried out. The consumption energy of the single stitched CFRP laminates (W<SUB>t</SUB>) and stitch threads broken modes were obtained by such interlaminar tension tests. DCB test results show that the G<SUB>IC</SUB> of stitched CFRP laminates of several stitch thread thicknesses are governed by stitch density (SD). It is found that the relationship between ΔG<SUB>IC</SUB>/ΔSD and W<SUB>t</SUB> are linear function. In other words, the G<SUB>IC</SUB> of Kevlar<SUP>®</SUP> stitched CFRP laminates is not only governed by SD but also W<SUB>t</SUB> obtained from the interlaminar tension tests. It is also suggested that the interlaminar tension test results exhibit the potential for G<SUB>IC</SUB> estimation on the Kevlar<SUP>®</SUP> stitched CFRP laminates instead of conducting the DCB tests.

    A CFRP scarf-repaired specimen is manufactured using the autoclave method on the assumption that it is a part of the repaired composite airframes. Such specimens are composed of a scarf joint and a step-lap joint. Though the in-plane mechanical properties of the scarf-repaired composites have been studied, few researches on out-of-plane behavior have been reported. Thus, the mechanism of the impact damages in the scarf-repaired composites was clarified through two kinds of experiments, the low-velocity impact test and the static indentation test. Through the low-velocity impact test, the damage configuration was observed and the influences of the scarf angle and stacking sequence on impact damage were investigated. As a result, the debonding at the interface between the adhesive layer and the repair laminate was observed in all the specimens. Moreover, damage growth was observed through the static indentation test. The indentation results indicated that the debonding at the interface between the adhesive layer and the repair laminate occurs at the intersection of the adhesive layer and the delamination of the repair laminate.

    This study investigated the thermo-elastic properties and microscopic ply cracking behaviors in carbon fiber reinforced nanotube-dispersed epoxy laminates. The nanocomposite laminates used in this study consisted of traditional carbon fibers and epoxy resin filled with cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs). Thermo-mechanical properties of unidirectional nanocomposite laminates were evaluated, and quasi-static and fatigue tension tests of cross-ply laminates were carried out in order to observe the damage accumulation behaviors of matrix cracks. Clear retardation of matrix crack onset and accumulation was found in composite laminates with CSCNT compared to those without CSCNT. Fracture toughness associated with matrix cracking was evaluated based on the analytical model using the experimental results. It was concluded that the dispersion of CSCNT resulted in fracture toughness improvement and residual thermal strain decrease, and specifically, the former was the main contribution to the retardation of matrix crack formation.

    Experimental investigations of interlaminar strength for Kevlar<SUP>(R)</SUP> stitched CFRP laminates were carried out. The used Kevlar<SUP>(R)</SUP> thread thicknesses are 400d (denier), 600d, 800d, 1, 000d and 1, 200d. The stitched carbon fiber (CF) preforms were cured with RTM (resin transfer molding) technique. Stitching types employed to CF dry preform (T300 and T700) are a modified lock stitch (MLS) which has the stitch inter-locking position on the CFRP laminate surface and a lock stitch (LS) which has the inter-locking position in the CFRP laminate where an industrial sewing machine was used. Test specimens containing a single stitching thread were cut from the stitched CFRP laminates. The test specimens were loaded to the out-of-plane direction by a screw driven testing machine. Load-displacement curves were obtained and sectional observations for broken test specimens were executed. Maximum tension load and consumption energy for the single stitchthread specimens were measured. A trend would be found that MLS cases show larger maximum load and consumption energy than those of LS cases for each stitch thread thickness. The maximum load of the test specimen increases with stitch thread thickness. On the other hand, the consumption energy of 1, 000d is the highest among all the stitch thread thickness specimens. The reason why the 1, 000d MLS case shows the highest energy is an intense pull-out phenomenon. It is revealed that the maximum load and consumption energy of the stitched CFRP laminates was governed by an inter-locking position of stitching in the CFRP laminates. It is also suggested that the allowable strength and load distribution along the stitch thread affects the breaking position of the stitch thread in the CFRP laminates. A similarity is unveiled in the relationship between the values of G<SUB>1</SUB> by double cantilever beam (DCB) tests and failure modes of stitching threads and in the relationship between the value of consumption energy by the present tests and failure modes of stitching threads.

    Experimental investigations of CFRP laminates by using carbon fiber (CF) stitching were carried out for evaluating CF stitching effect. The used CF stitch thread is TR 40-1K (612d), in-plane fiber of the CFRP is T700 12K, and resin is TR-A31 for resin transfer molding. Various stitch densities of the CF stitched CFRP laminates for double cantilever beam (DCB) tests were employed here. An insert type of loading fixture which was developed by National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) was employed in DCB tests. Pull-out tests of a single carbon stitch thread in the CFRP laminates were also carried out. It is clarified from the DCB test results that the relationship between the volume fraction of CF stitch thread (V<SUB>ft</SUB>) and G<SUB>l</SUB> shows a mostly linear function. Moreover, this increase slope of V<SUB>ft</SUB>-G<SUB>l</SUB> curve indicates higher one than CFRP stitched by Kevlar-29 1000d. Single CF stitch thread pull-out tests showed that there are two fracture modes of the CF stitch threads in the CFRP laminates, and that a difference in the shape of the load-displacement curve corresponds to these fracture modes. However, there is no big difference in the total energy consumption amount in these different fracture modes. Moreover, CF stitch thread pull-out test results indicate that the energy consumed per unit area of the CF stitch thread was larger than Kevlar-29 1000d stitch thread. This finding agrees with the fact that Interlaminar toughness improvement of CFRP laminate for mode I by CF stitching is more effective than that by Kevlar-29 1000d stitching shown in V<SUB>ft</SUB>-G<SUB>l</SUB> relationships.

    This study focused on mechanical properties under through-the-thickness tension loads for stitched CFRP laminates. Tension tests in this direction for stitched CFRP laminates were carried out using the test specimens with a single stitch thread. The used Kevlar thread thickness was 1, 000 denier and modified lock stitch by an industrial sewing machine was employed for the present laminates. The test specimen was glued to aluminum T angles and loaded by a screw driven test machine in the displacement control mode. Load-displacement curves were obtained for all the cases and slice pictures along the stitch thread direction were taken by micro focused X-ray CT system for some specimens at several displacement levels. It was confirmed that interlaminar crack propagation through-out the test section occurred first. In the stitched laminate cases, the upper stitch thread broke secondarily at inter-locked point. Finally, the upper thread pulled out from CFRP laminates with some friction force. It was also found that the energies absorbed by the break lead of the stitch thread (W<SUB>2</SUB>) and during pull-out (W<SUB>3</SUB>) contributed mainly to the total energy consumption in the through-the-thickness tension tests of stitched CFRP laminates. FEM analysis were conducted where the present stitched CFRP tension test data were introduced into element properties. It was confirmed that numerical load vs. crack opening displacement curves and relationships between Mode I energy release rate and volume fraction of stitch threads were in good agreement with experimental data by DCB test, when both effects of W<SUB>2</SUB> and W<SUB>3</SUB> are taken into account. Fictitious analysis without the effect of thread pull-out provided lower estimation of the Mode I energy release rate.

    Static strength tests were carried out for the CNF/epoxy two phase composites and CF/CNF/ epoxy three phase laminates in tension, compression, and flexure. The used CNF was cup-stacked type carbon nanofiber (CSNF) made by GSI Creos Corporation. Two different lengths of CSNF dispersed epoxy were employed. Moreover, each CSNF was dispersed to epoxy resin with the ratio of 5-wt% and 10-wt% respectively. An epoxy resin EP827® and a hardener of aromatic amine EPIKURE W® (Japan Epoxy Resin Co. Ltd.) are also employed. TORAYCA® C6343 was employed as reinforcement of three phase laminates. The obtained mechanical properties were compared with the neat epoxy and conventional CFRP laminates. It is revealed that the present three phase laminates exhibit higher compressive and flexural strengths than conventional CFRP laminates. However, dispersion of the CSNF to epoxy may not affect modulus and strengths of the three phase laminates in tensile loading. In CSNF/epoxy composites, there is a trend that increase in CSNF weight makes higher modulus and strengths. It can be concluded that a potential of CSNF as the modifier agent of epoxy for higher mechanical properties is demonstrated in CSNF/epoxy composites and compressive strengths of three phase laminates.

    Composite materials, especially CF/epoxy 2-D laminates, have the capability of light weight design for in-plane high loading structures. On the other hand, interlaminar strength is not strong against a through-the-thickness direction load. The authors' group carried out an evaluation of interlaminar strength improved CFRP laminates which are reinforced by through-the-thickness fiber, such as Kevlar or carbon stitching and also Z-anchor^<TM> which technology is developed by Shikibo, Ltd. and Mffl, Ltd. This paper introduces the interlaminer strength improvement effects on CFRP laminates such as mode I energy release late of Gi for CF stitched CFRP laminates, impact damage propagation, and compression after impact (CAI) strength.

    The double cantilever beam (DCB) tests were executed for stitched CFRP laminates to evaluate the interlaminar fracture toughness (G<SUB>IC</SUB>). The stitch parameters (stitch line spacing and pitch spacing) were changed and their effects on interlaminar fracture toughness were examined by means of DCB tests and FEM analysis. Different shape patterns in load-crack opening displacement (COD) curves were obtained at one level of equivalent stitch density for several specimens. It can be concluded that the difference in load-COD curve shape was affected by the stitch parameters. On the other hand, G<SUB>IC</SUB>values themselves were not so seriously affected by the shape of load-COD curves. Interlaminar fracture toughness is mainly governed by the stitch density, in other words, increase in stitch density in laminates leads to the improvement in G<SUB>ICt</SUB>. Simple FEM model tuned for unstitched and single stitch line DCB specimens was presented. FEM analysis results in linear relationship the between interlaminar fracture toughness of stitched CFRP laminates and the stitch density. Moreover, G<SUB>ICA</SUB> of CFRP laminates with arbitrary stitched parameter can be predicted by the simple FEM model.

    Tensile tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of finger joint strength for CFRP laminates structStudy ures. Observations during the strength tests, strength evaluations, and structural analysis (FEA) were also conducted. Manufactured specimens have parameters which are the splicing pitch and splicing depth as the finger joint parameters. The T series specimen was provided the grooves in which were the perpendicular to the applied load direction. The L series specimen was provided the grooves in which were the applied load direction. It was revealed that the adhesive bonding strength of finger joint for the CFRP laminates affects the splicing grooves direction, the splicing depth, and the splicing pitch. The L series specimens were improved the strength about three times of the normal shear bonded joint strength. It was confirmed that finger joint (L series) was an effective structural bonding method for high loaded CFRP laminates joint area.

    In order to construct the cryogenic fuel tanks of launch vehicles by fully utilizing the advanced composite materials, this research project was aimed to look into the possibilities of improving the fuel containment performance of the tanks. As the string of damages could function as the path of fuel leakage, the quantitative relationship between transverse cracks and permeation was obtained based on the semi-analytical model. The transverse cracks were thus found to be the essential cause of the leakage. The prevention of the leakage is dependent on the existence of intact or damage-free plies in the laminate. The formation of transverse cracks in contiguous plies was also thoroughly investigated both experimentally and analytically from this standpoint.
    To further reduce the robustness of the fuel tanks against permeation, carbon nanotubes were employed as an additive to the resins of the composites, both mechanically increasing the toughness and physically reducing the diffusivity through the resin. The mechanical as well as thermal and electrical properties were looked into for the resins dispersed with nanotubes at various weight content. Epoxy and polyetherimide were used as basic resins. The contribution of the nanotubes to the stiffness improvement was larger for polyetherimide resin, whereas the increase in electrical conductivity was higher for the epoxy, showing the complex contribution of the nanotubes to the different properties.
    The results of the present project is summarized as the collection of reviewed papers together with the conference papers, published in the past three years.
