    <p>For industrial effective use of low-density energy such as factory exhaust heat or solar heat utilization, development of large heat storage with fast heat exchange technology is required. Especially in cold regions such as in Hokkaido, the demand for heat in winter is large, and attempts to use large-scale, high-temperature unused waste heat from steel manufacturers and pulp factories to medium temperature zones such as hot water supply and air conditioning will become increasingly important in near future. Also, in automobiles and factories, the heat engine needs to be cooled during operation and must operate within a certain temperature range. However, if the heat engine is cooled down after it is stopped, it must be heated again as it restarts. Therefore the technology to suppress the temperature drop of the system by the application of heat storage and regeneration technology is expected. Previously, water or aqueous liquids were used for heat storage with heat exchange to suppress temperature drop of the system, however, only the sensible heat can be used for heat storage. For else, polymer phase change substances are used instead. However, high heat transfer characteristics could not be obtained as for their poor fluidity. This paper reports on the thermal properties of phase change emulsions as functional fluid that have both heat storage and fluidity for heat exchanging, moreover, basic characteristics of heat sinks modelled by metal powder additive manufacturing using a copper alloy with high thermal conductivity for the system application.</p>

    <p>A room-temperature magnetic refrigerator is attractive that does not use HCFC or its alternatives. It is expected that a wide temperature range can be get by packing multiple magnetic materials in active magnetic refrigerator (AMR) ducts. We focus on a temperature span that is difference between temperature of hot end and cold end when manganese-based magnetic materials are used. These materials have a large entropy change per unit volume, while the temperature range in which to show a large effect is relatively small. In order to investigate the temperature span, temperature distribution of inside AMR duct was measured. Experimental results show that larger temperature span can be obtained for the case of using multiple magnetic materials than that of using a single material. It is confirmed that when the large temperature span is obtained, the temperature distribution in the AMR duct corresponds to the temperature range in which the respective materials show a large magnetic entropy change.</p>

    Recently, electronics thermal management faces problems in the wake of component miniaturization, which has led to higher demands on heat flux dissipation. Pulsating heat pipe (PHP) can be used for cooling devices of electronics because of its potential for removing high heat flux. It is well known that various parameters affect the performance of the pulsating heat pipe. Therefore, many researchers have done research on the improvement of performance. This paper presents heat transfer characteristics of the open-loop pulsating heat pipe (OLPHP) using a self-rewetting fluid as working fluids. The heat transfer characteristic results were obtained by PHP that was made of copper tubes of internal diameters 1.8 mm. On the other hand, flow visualization tests were conducted by the use of a PHP that was made of Pyrex-glass tubes with the dimension of the copper tubes PHP. The experimental results indicate that OLPHP using self-rewetting fluid as working fluids can be observed anomalous liquid film behavior in adiabatic section. Especially, it was found that the liquid film was strong wavy when liquid slug moved to cooling section from heating section. The findings showed that the wavy liquid films and liquid slug behavior contributed to the thermal performance improvement.

    Hard disk drives (HDDs) have been widely used as data storage device. Their reliability remains crucial for securing the data stored in the drives. We study the flow behavior inside HDDs in order to understand the mechanism leading the fatal crash of the magnetic head against the disk surface. We performed a series of laboratory experiments based on flow visualization and measurements with a particle image velocimetry (PIV). A transparent HDD model was built and refractive-index matching (RIM) was applied at the experiments. The visualization revealed complex features of the flow. We present initial results of the quantitative evaluation of the velocity vector field based on the PIV measurements.

    This paper discusses the system performance of a magnetic heat pump with an active magnetic regenerator. The heat-transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the AMR are performed analytically. Measurements on the experimental magnetic heat pump test device are performed using distilled water as the working fluid. The coupling of a one-dimensional thermal model is presented. The thermal model takes into consideration the magneto-caloric effect as a source term and the energy conservation between a solid and a fluid. At cyclic steady states, the temperatures of the fluid on both sides of the regenerator are calculated numerically and compared with the measurement results. A reasonable agreement between simulations and experiments confirms the validity of the proposed model.

    An analytical and an experimental study have been conducted on the formation of snowdrifts at solar photovoltaic panels on the flat-roofed residences that are common in the snowy regions of Japan, such as in Hokkaido. Toward this, solar photovoltaic panels were installed on the flat roof of a building in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The amount of electric power generated after the formation of the snowdrift was also determined. The Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method was applied two-dimensionally to simulate the formation of snowdrifts around the panel, and the snow particles were blown with air into the calculation area to observe snowdrifts that formed by the interaction between the snow particles and the panel. We have presented an analytical model of snowdrift formation at a photovoltaic panel, and we compare its results with those of empirical examinations. The snowdrift was found to cover part of the panel surface if the panel had a clearance of less than 200 mm.

    This paper presents the flow behavior and heat transfer characteristics of an ice slurry flow through a crank-shaped channel. A trehalose aqueous solution is utilized as the liquid phase for the testing ice slurry.Trehalose is a naturally derived disaccharide composed of two glucose units which inhibits the growth of ice crystals. Specific parameters and features are considered throughout experimental investigation including the ice slurry flow velocity, heat flux of the heated surface, and the channel dimension. Evaluation of the local heat transfer coefficient and observation of flow behavior indicate that the distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient is strongly affected by both the flow behavior at the corner section of the test channel and the latent heat of the ice particles.

    Ice slurry that is a mixture of fine ice crystals and liquid water has been utilized in the ice storage system due to its good flow-ability and large latent heat of fusion. For ice slurry production techniques, there are presently a number of commercially available ice slurry generators. (e.g. Supercooled slurry ice generator, Scraper type generator, and Vacuum type generator etc.). In this study, an ice slurry sequential generating method was proposed. This method is based on the freezing-point depression phenomenon of the aqueous solution, which is maintained at a high-pressure condition. A low concentration NaCl aqueous solution was used as the testing fluid. As a result, we developed the ice slurry sequential generator on the basis of the pressure shift freezing method. Moreover, the experimental results showed that the characteristics of the ice slurry were closely related to the pressure and the initial temperature of the testing fluid.

    The purpose of this study is to understand the fundamental cooling characteristics of room temperature magnetic refrigerator using an active magnetic regenerator (AMR). The AMR is one of the regeneration cycles and has four sequential processes: adiabatic magnetization, heat exchange fluid flow, adiabatic demagnetization, and fluid flow. Gadolinium particles of 0.6mm diameter are adopted as a magnetic refrigerant and fully packed into a test section. The temperature change based on the magnetocaloric effect is distributed to the hot end and the cold end with heat transport fluid. The results reveal that the AMR cycle shows the improvement of the cooling performance of the room temperature magnetic refrigerator. In addition, it is found that the temperature difference between the hot and cold ends is strongly affected by the fluid transfer volume.

    An experimental study on melting and forced-convectional heat transfer characteristics of an ice slurry around a horizontal heated cylinder has been conducted. A mixture of fine ice particles and a trehalose aqueous solution is used as the ice slurry under test. While the ice slurry forms a sub-steady flow around a heated cylinder, a constant heat flux is electrically imposed on the surface of the cylinder. Under a sub-steady state, temperatures on the heated surface are measured at different angular locations in order to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient distribution. Simultaneously, the flow behavior of the ice slurry is carefully observed to discuss the mechanism of the heat transfer. Experiments are carried out under two parameters: velocity of the ice slurry and heat flux through the surface of the cylinder. Heat transfer coefficients obtained with the ice slurry are compared to those with a single-phase solution. Based on this comparison, specific heat transfer characteristics of the ice slurry relative to those of single-phase liquids are discussed. Furthermore, the average heat transfer coefficient on the entire heat transfer area is also evaluated. The results reveal that heat transfer coefficient increases together with an increased heat flux. This tendency can be attributed to an increase in an inhibitive effect on the temperature rise at the surface due to increased latent heat absorption. In addition, it is found that the effect of ice particles on the heat transfer is greatly affected by velocity conditions, particularly in the front region of the cylinder. This fact can be explained in connection with a transition of the contact state between ice particles and the heated surface, which is brought by the action of velocity-dependent body forces on ice particles. Moreover, thermophysical properties of the testing ice slurry are estimated for a dimensional analysis to organize the effects of each factor. Finally, an experimental correlation equation is proposed.
