    The purpose of the study is to obtain a brief outlook on the influence of upper forest limits due to the recent temperature change in Finnmark, northern Norway. The forest of this region is dominated by mountain birch (Betula pubescens) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). In most areas, upper forest limits are formed by trees of mountain birch at the elevation of ca. 300 m a.s.l., and in some areas Scots pine takes the place too. Former studies of the tree age structure show that trees forming forest limits germinated in warmer period of the 1940s. Recent warming can make recruits on and above the forest limits. We set five quadrat plots in July 2007 and counted individuals of tree species and measured the tree size. Many seedling and sapling were counted in the birch forest plots, but there is a clear gap in size distribution. Individuals with the height from 50 to 100 cm were almost missing maybe because of heavy reindeer grazing. Scots pine forest also shows a gap in height but it is not clear. This gap is considered to be formed during the colder period of the 1960s to 1980s.

    Elevations of birch (Betula pubescens) forest limits in northern Norway are measured by using 56 sheets of 1:50,000 scale topographical maps. The highest positions of forest land cover boundaries on uniform slopes with various aspects are selected as reference points of forest limits. The total number of the points is 1,052. The mean elevation of birch forest limits is 423 m a.s.l. This value shows a good agreement with the previous studies. The mean elevations of forest limits on slopes with four aspects are 394 m (north facing). 375 m (east facing), 452 m (south facing), and 439 m (west facing) respectively. The aspect of slopes with the lowest mean value of forest limits is not the north facing but the east facing in this region.

    A meso-scale cyclone climatology in the Sea of Okhotsk and its surroundings was presented. Twice daily surface synoptic charts of four years (1984-1987) published by the Japan Meteorological Agency were used to detect cyclones. The geographical distribution of cyclone occurrence frequencies was discussed with special attention to its seasonal features.

    Relationships between the large-scale cold outbreaks (LSCO) and the large-scale surface temperature anomalies (LSA) in East Asia were studied by using the methods of synoptic climatology. The distribution of the LSA was classified into three types. These corresponded to the general circulation pattern that characterized by the blocking high and the polar vortex: 1) Polar Region Blocking type (PLB), 2) North Pacific Blocking type (NPB), and 3) Polar Vortex type (PLV). For these three types, synoptic features of the general circulation were compared. Finally schematic models for the LSCO and the LSA were presented.
