The unprecedented impact of human activity on Earth's climate and the ongoing increase in global energy demand have made the development of carbon-neutral energy sources ever more important. Hydrogen is an attractive and versatile energy carrier (and important and widely used chemical) obtainable from water through photocatalysis using sunlight, and through electrolysis driven by solar or wind energy1,2. The most efficient solar hydrogen production schemes, which couple solar cells to electrolysis systems, reach solar-to-hydrogen (STH) energy conversion efficiencies of 30% at a laboratory scale3. Photocatalytic water splitting reaches notably lower conversion efficiencies of only around 1%, but the system design is much simpler and cheaper and more amenable to scale-up1,2-provided the moist, stoichiometric hydrogen and oxygen product mixture can be handled safely in a field environment and the hydrogen recovered. Extending our earlier demonstration of a 1-m2 panel reactor system based on a modified, aluminium-doped strontium titanate particulate photocatalyst4, we here report safe operation of a 100-m2 array of panel reactors over several months with autonomous recovery of hydrogen from the moist gas product mixture using a commercial polyimide membrane5. The system, optimized for safety and durability, and remaining undamaged on intentional ignition of recovered hydrogen, reaches a maximum STH of 0.76%. While the hydrogen production is inefficient and energy negative overall, our findings demonstrate that safe, large-scale photocatalytic water splitting, and gas collection and separation are possible. To make the technology economically viable and practically useful, essential next steps are reactor and process optimization to substantially reduce costs and improve STH efficiency, photocatalyst stability and gas separation efficiency.

In order to fabricate LaTiO2N electrodes, which have been reported as visible-light-active water-splitting photocatalysts, La2Ti2O7 films were prepared on titanium substrates as precursor films. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. La2Ti2O7 films were prepared directly on titanium metal substrates by hydrothermal reactions using a titanium substrate and La2O3 powder in deionized water at 573 K for 60 h. The cell parameters of La2Ti2O7 prepared by hydrothermal reaction were a = 7.80 Å, b = 13.00 Å, c = 5.54 Å, and γ = 98.59°; these are in good agreement with published values. The effect of experimental parameters such as reaction temperature and time on crystallinity, film thickness, and surface morphology of the products has been studied.

An alkaline earth molybdates and tungstates, such as AMoO4 and AWO4, films have been successfully fabricated on the respective metal substrate in AOH (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) solutions by a ball rotation-assisted solution reaction at room temperature. This film consists the polyhedral crystals of AMO4 with an average grain size of 8 μm. The dissolution of substrate surface was mainly controlled by the concentration of H2O2 oxidizing agent and ball rotation to form MO4 2 − in the solution. AMO4 was deposited on the substrate by the reaction between MO4 2 − and A2 + ions without any high energy or high temperature treatment. Also, the mass transport of alkaline earth ions on to the solid/solution interface was improved as a result of the vigorous solution agitation by the ball rotation. Therefore, the deposition rate of the AMO4 films was accelerated by the ball rotation. A decrease in the grain size of the film was observed incase of an excessive ball rotation.

In this study, we developed a method of applying photocatalyst powder on a metal substrate and rolling it with a roll press to form a photoelectrode. As a result of the method, we succeeded in fabricating a photoelectrode with a width of 20 mm and a length of 50 mm, and confirmed that the photoelectrode characteristics are equivalent to those of a smaller one. As an example, using titanium metal as a metal substrate, LaNbON2 as a photocatalyst material is laminated by an electrodeposition method, and then the roll-pressed photoelectrode at room temperature is about 100uA/cm2 in simulated sunlight (AM1.5G). The photocurrent was observed. This is a value comparable with other methods, and the superiority of photoelectrode fabrication by the roll pressing method, which is a very simple and low-cost method, was shown.

The new ammonothermal reactor has been developed. It has lower dead volume than previous one. SrAlSiN3:Eu2+ is a red-emitting phosphor that is potentially very useful in white light-emitting diodes because of its properties such as thermal stability and bright emissivity features.A limitation of this phosphor is that it is commonly synthesized at high temperature and pressure. To address this limitation, we investgate a low-temperature synthesis of SrAlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors through a dissolution–precipitation process in supercritical ammonia and the phosphors’ physical properties. All products exhibit a broad emission that is centered at approximately 580 nm, which we attribute to the 5d→4f transition of Eu2+, under excitation wavelengths from the ultraviolet to blue range.

When considering nitrides as functional materials such as photocatalysts and phosphor, the effects of local structures such as surface morphology and defects in crystals are far more significant than those of the mean values of bulk properties. Therefore, when shifting the study of nitrides from the conventional to the new. such as from the study of nitrides as environmentally inert materials to nitrides as functional materials. it is necessary to re-evaluate, from the beginning, the methodology of nitride synthesis. Based on the above perspectives, we conduct our study with emphasis on the synthesis of functional nitride related materials, especially photocatalysts materials, using the ammonothermal method. In conclusion, we have succeeded to prepare LaTaON_2 perovskite with well crystallinity in supercritical ammonia with sodium amide at 600℃. And the photocatalytic properties of LaTaON_2 prepared by ammonothermal method have improved in comparison of LaTaON_2 by solid state reaction. Before and after reaction in supercritical ammonia with sodium amide as a mineralizer, the morphology and particle size was dramatically changed. So it may be considered this reaction proceed in NH_3-NaNH_2 solution as a solvent. This approach could be extended to synthesis of other oxynitrid groups.

    [I]Major Establishments
(1)The preparation of transparent bulk ceramics by melting/casting of eutectic melt in the ternary system Al_2O_3-HfO_2-GdAlO_3, and fabrication of ternary nano-composite ceramics by appropriate annealing of them (Papers 1 & 3).
    (2) The preparation of transparent bulk materials from the eutectic melt in pseudo-binary C_<12>A_7-CoYAlO_4 system in the ternary system Al_2O_3-CaO-Y_2O_3, and the fabrication of binary nano-composites by appropriate annealing of them (Papers 2,4 & 11).
(3)The computer simulation can depict the solidification of the melts in these systems, thus explains their Nano-/Meso-/Micro-structures (Papers 5-8).
(4)Those amorphous matrices and/or the ternary compound CaLaGaO_4 can be formed as a red phosphor by doping Eu (Papers 3,9 & 10).
    [II]Their Importance
Ceramics nano-composites have generally been fabricated from mixed powders by solid state processes : (1) Synthesis of them by solid state reactions, (2) the dispersion of powders, (3) molding of powders, (4) firing for sintering. Those processes are difficult to prepare homogeneous products and nano-structure controlled ones, because higher temperature firing would bring about the grain growth of every phase.
The present research, on the other hand, (1) makes the homogeneous eutectic melts, (2) casts in a mold with the desired shape to fabricate the amorphous bulk, then (3) anneals to result in the nano-structures materials. Therefore, transparent nano-structured composites, which were very difficult to fabricate from powders by sintering, can be produced.
Moreover, the solid solution samples with multi-components with homogeneous compositions can be produced by this method easily. The present method using melt/cast of eutectic melts, therefore, could be evaluated an innovative method for nano-composites ceramics. It was awarded as one of the best poster award (Paper #3) and the cover page of an International Journal (Paper #1).

This study aimed direct fabrication of ceramics nano-composites and/or nano-hybrids by Solution Processing. Following results have been obtained :
    1) TiO_2/hydroxyapatite nano-composites
To combine photocatalitic activity of TiO_2 and chemical and biological absorption of hydroxyapatite, their nano-composites have been fabricated in a single step in a solution. Calcium carbonate powders were hydrothermally treated at 100-180℃ in the mixture of H_3PO_4 and water soluble Ti complex solution Anatase nanocrystals with 20 nm width and 60 nm length have been deposited on the surface of hydroxyapatite micro-crystals with severe μm size. Theses composites showed higher photocatalytic activities than TiO_2 only.
    2) Nano-particles of CeO_2-ZrO_2 Solid Solutions
In the advance of nano-particle synthesis, we have succeeded to fabricate the nano-particle of metastable tetragonal solid solutions in the CeO_2-ZrO_2 system, by hydrothermal methods at 100 - 150℃ for their co-precipitates.
    3) Carbon nano-cells and patterns
By applying the electro-discharge in non-aqueous solvents, we could succeed to obtain metal encapsulated carbon nano-cells with 10-100 nm in size, and a pattern of ammorphous carbon directly on conducting substrates. It is very interesting that carbon patterning could be established in liquid phase.
