The purpose of this research project is to investigate the role of the British empire in the environmental history of the American colonies in terms of the political economy of empire. During the term, I published an article about the idea of colonization and imperial ideology of William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania Colony, written in English, and three book reviews on early American history. I also read papers at several conferences, including the paper for the panel "the new current of early American history" at the 43rd meeting of the Japanese Association for American History. Also, I conducted research trips investigating manuscripts and other materials at research libraries and archives in the United States during summer and spring recesses.

植民地時代フィラデルフィアにおける自発的結社と公共秩序の生成

今年度の研究成果としては、まず植民地時代フィラデルフィアにおける自発的結社の生成の中心的人物であるベンジャミン・フランクリンの『自伝』を史料として、都市社会における公共性について自発的結社と個人の関係という視点から論じた論文である「商業社会の倫理と社会関係資本主義の精神:『フランクリン自伝』における礼節と社交」と題して、『アメリカ研究』第45号(2011年3月発行)に発表した。ここでは、フランクリン個人の活動の分析を通じて、図書の貸借のような私的な個人の社交が公共性、すなわち都市における公共図書館の設立に至る過程が見出され、自発的結社とそれが体現する公共性が礼節と社交という商業的イデオロギーに基づくものであったことを明らかにすることが出来た。また、1750年の自発的結社の一つである教育機関フィラデルフィア・アカデミーの創設を当時の都市社会的コンテクストのなかで検討した研究報告を、2010年8月6日に北九州アメリカ史研究会(於福岡大学)で発表し、研究者たちとの活発な意見交換を行うことが出来た。この研究は論文の形式にまとめられ、現在『史学雑誌』に投稿中である。
また、昨年度予定していたアメリカ合衆国への調査旅行を今年度三月に実現し、フィラデルフィアでの史料調査と共に初期アメリカ史の指導的歴史家との研究に関する情報交換を行い、研究課題の総括と共に今後の研究の方向性を得ることが出来た。フィラデルフィアではペンシルヴァニア歴史協会およびアメリカ学術協会での史料調査を遂行した。ここでは、研究課題の一つである植民地都市における自発的結社と植民地政府との関係を明らかにするための基本的な史料として、フィラデルフィア市会の議事録等の複写を入手した。これにより、これまでに収集したペンシルヴァニア植民地議会議事録や植民地参事会議事録等と共に、植民地都市の公的領域における政府と市民的組織の関係を考察することが出来た。
