In this paper, “Arechi and Inyouchi (Surrounded Land)”—circumstances and intentions related to the launch of the daily journal Inyouchi, which have received little attention in the past, are discussed in detail. “Inyouchi” is an important term, which has been used in Ayukawa’s poetry and poetry criticism since the pre-War time; it is also the name of a poetry magazine co-founded by Ayukawa with Hiroshima poets such as Miyata Chiaki and Ebara Nobuo. This brings us to the question why, in 1954, did Ayukawa, a central figure in the poetry world at that time, join Hiroshima poets to create a new poetry magazine? On the basis of the Hiroshima poets’ situation then, we examine the spirit of poetic collaboration to which Ayukawa contributed.

This paper will examine how Ayukawa’s initiatives tried to activate the community of poets in their maturity and old age postwar. The fact that Ayukawa emphasized the role of cooperation in poetry has traditionally been considered an issue related to the Arechi group; however, this text will try to position Ayukawa’s behavior in the context of the poetry circle in its entirety, with regard to its status as a platform that supported group poetic activities. We will also review the leading role of the Arechi group in the 1950s, regarding the principles of poetic drama—an issue in both poetry and literary circles at the time—to position anew the Arechi group’s activities within debates about a productive association between poetry and the community.

Ayukawa Nobuo's serial poems about the hospital ships, called "Byoinsen Nisshi (The hospital ship's journal)," have been regarded as attempts at expressing of his own war experience in linguistic forms. However, the poet often commented on the limits and uncertainties of such narrations of war experience from the point of view of a soldier. The concept of the serial poems should be reconsidered in light of such recognition of the limits of personal representations.Through the analysis of six poems included in "Byoinsen Nisshi," this essay illustrates how the work thematizes the difficult relationship between the war experience and the subject of its narration, instead of dealing with the war experience itself. It also revises the generally accepted image of Ayukawa as a poet who simply resisted the weathering of the memory, and reexamines the scope of his vision as a thinker. The reading would lead to revisionary explorations of the basic assumptions and the limits of the concept of the modern subject and of the poet's significance in the history of thought.

We classify ‘Byouinsen Nisshi’” (Hospital Ship Diaries) (1947–1954) that roughly have been bundled as ‘The series of Byouinsen” into two connected streams, focusing on the poetic structure of the works and the process of how these poems came to be released together. We revisit the interpretation about this work as the verbalization of Ayukawa’s wartime experience (including fictional representations).“Byouinsen Nisshi” poems explored in this thesis allude to a structural kinship between religion (Christianity) and nationalism. While the hospital ship represents the individual’s body as manacles from which there is no escape, it is also a metaphor for the state. This study clearly shows that Ayukawa’s interest in Catholicism, under the influence of T.S. Eliot, was not merely a poetic concept or a fragmentary appropriation introduced into his works; it was also inextricably bound to his postwar view of the state.

This thesis investigates Ayukawa’s own public philosophy, which infuses this work hitherto considered a simple lyrical poem inspired by his own private life. This poem about the narrator’s decision to share his life with the young girl “Mari” is in contrast with the cluster of somber poems, which we have argued in the preceding chapters, and it has been regarded as a representative of a different stream of his poetry. Some have seen it as an expression of guilt as a survivor who evades sharing a homely life with an adult woman. However, his poem negates the “naturally occurring” emotions that form the basis of the traditional lyrical poem. In an examination of this poem, we can detect the philosophical process of building a relationship with the “other,” and at the same time, it shows the process of building a relationship between the subject and the language. While reviewing the contentions regarding Ayukawa’s lyrical poetry and “poetry that sings,” we reassess this work as a new lyrical poem that participates in the problem of “public” with having “private” ground. In these ways, the present study clarifies the ideological position that runs through Ayukawa’s multifaceted works, demonstrating that his postwar poetic ideology differs from the concept of the political publicness and subjectivity in postwar democracy and that his poetic ideology contains a public philosophy of literature.

This thesis examines the methodology underlying the poetry of the journal “A” (pronounced “Ah”), which is considered the foundation of contemporary poetry, and that of its principal figure, Anzai Fuyue. In recent years, Anzai and “A” have often been classified as Dalian-based form of colonial literature and described as a short-verse movement that forms the beginning of modernist poetry. However, in the actual magazine, Anzai focuses on a series of long poems, and the narrative fictionality that they form represents the core of “A.” In this chapter, we demonstrate that the method by which these works were presented possesses intensity unlike the “Shi to Shiron” magazine-style modernism of the early Showa period. At the same time, we propose that the criticism of the era through poetic fiction was self-contained as a form of language play

The poem, &#039;Heishi no Uta&#039;, considered to be one of Ayukawa Nobuo&#039;s reepresentative works, has been considered to have as its themes the sense of self-hatred of a soldier who has survived and a requiem for those soldiers who fell in battle. However, if one analyzes closely the details of the text, the &#039;soldiers&#039; who appear in the poem are revealed as not necessarily those who have been sacrificed in the war, but rather their aggressiveness and group nature are emphasised.<br />
Moreover, they are depicted as having continued to exist in the same way fron the time during the war until the time of the poem&#039;s publication. From this it can be surmised that the poet&#039;s intention is to use the metaphors of battle and army as a way of criticising the lack of reflection on the part of those contemporary poets who had formerly written poems about the war as a group. In this paper, I both examine the correspondence between the arguments that Ayukawa developed at the time concerning war responsibility（or, more accurately, postwar responsibility）and &#039;Heishi no Uta&#039;, and attempt to separate out Ayukawa&#039;s ideological position by bringing out the structure of the poem.<br />
In this way, my aim is to clarify the extent to which the poems of Ayukawa Nobuo, who has conventionally been treated as a sentimental poet of elegies for those who have died, have their sights on the situation in which they were written.

This paper is an attempt to revisit the term “executor” by focusing on the poem Shinda Otoko (The Dead Man) (1947), which has been read as an elegy to Ayukawa’s friend “M,” who died during the War. The term is seen as a clear expression of his intent to carry out the late M’s final will and is profoundly relevant to a comprehensive appraisal of Arechi. In this chapter, I argue that the term “executor” in Ayukawa’s poem stresses the way that the system of total war erased all distinction between the dead and those who continue to live, negating the possibility of the very act of bequeathing and inheriting. Moreover, the denial of the possibility of acting as a proxy for the dead symbolizes the decision to undertake a new poetic endeavor (postwar poetry). This chapter also examines Ayukawa’s postwar poetics in relation to the meaning of modernism and wartime poetry, highlighting the critical nature of this work, through his discussion of the poet’s responsibilities within postwar society after experiencing war.

We will examine how rhythm —-the lifeline of colloquial free poems—- was expressed in postwar poetry, a form characterized by a denial of readability and musicality. In the Taisho period, poem —-the rationale for rhythm-- was an outpouring of inner emotion while in postwar discussions, rhythm conveyed the ideological content of the poetic work. Proceeding further along this theoretical path, we also affirm the importance of the poetry of Kawakami Haruo who inspired Ayukawa to reconsider the association between rhythm and thought.
