During World War II, the U.S. government uprooted more than 110,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast and put them into inland camps. This incident has been examined from various aspects by a number of scholars. But very little has been written about how the federal government treated the press of Japanese Americans. This study analyzes how the Office of Facts and Figures (OFF) and Office of War Information (OWI) made use of the Japanese "enemy language" newspapers for information dissemination during the earliest phase of war. It also investigates how these agencies elicited voluntary...

This article investigates in detail how the United States government censored newspapers at Japanese-American "assembly centers" during World War II. These camps were temporary staging areas that accommodated the evacuated West Coast Japanese Americans before they were transferred to more permanent inland "relocation centers." Drawing on the archival records of camp authorities, this study first examines official "center regulations" that enabled press censorship. It then probes how censorship was carried out by local camp administrations. By looking at examples of press controls at major a...

During the period from Pearl Harbor to the mass evacuation in mid-1942, the federal goverment enforced a unique press control policy on Japanese-language newspapers. During the first month following Pearl Harbor, the federal government took various suppressive measures such as arrests of publishers, interrogation of staff members, temporary shutdowns of newspapers, and Submission of English translations. Thereafter, the federal government continued to intervene by using less coercive methods. This press control policy, amplified by pressing wartime social conditions, was so effective that i...

This study attempts to explore how the Japanese-Amierican camp newspaper covered the first winter holiday season in evacuation camps. Specifically, this study conducts a qualitative analysis of the three camp newspaper, the Topaz Times (Utah), the Manzanar Free Press (California), and the Heart Mountain Sentinel (Wyoming). This study concludes that, although their holiday coverage was essentially constrained by the framework of the camp authority's enlightenment and Americanization policies, they also exposed some negative aspects of in-camp holiday celebrations. These newspapers acknowledg...

The purpose of the present research is to investigate how the Kennedy Administration controlled the flow of information and news during the missile crisis in 1962. This study was carried out by making use of both previous literature and primary sources which were disclassified in the last decade. This study concludes that the administration learned a lot from the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and highly valued the control of information throughout the crisis. To the administration, control of information -- news release, strict restriction of leaks, and communication through the press -- was...

Federal Government Decision-Making on the Suppression of the Japanese-Language Press from Pearl Harbor to Mass Incarceration"というタイトルの論文を完成させることができた。
