Recent studies have shown an association between excessive smartphone use and health problems. Along with such mounting concerns, health risk information on excessive smartphone use has been presented through various media. Such information is usually aimed at making smartphone users understand the associated health risks, thereby preventing excessive use or reducing current use. However, according to self-affirmation theory, such information may pose a threat to heavy smartphone users because it implies that they are engaging in maladaptive behavior. Therefore, to defend themselves, they may not accept the information and may not be highly motivated to reduce their usage. According to self-affirmation theory, such maladaptive defensive responses can be reduced through the affirmation of important values. We examined whether self-affirmation prior to reading health risk information increased heavy users’ motivation to reduce smartphone usage. Participants (142 undergraduate students aged 18–22 years) reported their mean daily smartphone use. They then completed a writing task that affirmed/did not affirm an important personal value. Next, they read an article on the health risks of smartphone overuse and reported their motivation to reduce smartphone use. As a result, when heavy users did not self-affirm, they were significantly less motivated to reduce use than light users. However, when heavy users self-affirmed, their motivation was significantly higher than when they did not self-affirm. This effect of self-affirmation was not shown in light users. These results suggest that health risk information combined with self-affirmation is effective in reducing smartphone usage by heavy users.

  • The effects of COVID-19 vaccination on attitudes toward foreign residents in Japan: Focusing on the behavioral immune system

Infectious disease threats cause prejudice toward foreigners through the behavioral immune system. Huang et al. (2011) showed that vaccination can reduce such prejudice. This study investigated the effects of COVID-19 vaccination on attitudes toward foreign residents in Japan. A survey was conducted in two phases. Before the vaccination of older adults had begun, a survey measuring their attitudes toward foreigners was conducted as a baseline. Once the vaccination program was underway, a second survey was conducted to measure individual differences in germ aversion, vaccination status, perceptions regarding vaccine efficacy, and attitudes toward foreign residents. The survey (<i>n</i>=520) demonstrated that among the participants that were not fully vaccinated those with high germ aversion had more negative attitudes toward foreign residents than those with low germ aversion, which was consistent with the concept of the behavioral immune system. In contrast, germ aversion was attenuated among those who had been fully vaccinated. This effect occurred when the coronavirus vaccines were perceived to be highly effective. We discuss the ability of vaccination to reduce prejudice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of construal level and achievement goal on predictions of how long it would take to complete an academic task. According to Construal Level Theory (Liberman & Trope, 2008; Trope & Liberman, 2010), when we predict the distant future (i.e., we construe the future in abstract features) , those predictions are based on abstract information. We hypothesized that participants who reported a stronger achievement goal predicted that they would spend a greater amount of time on the task when they construed the task abstractly. Two experiments tested the hypothesis. First, we assessed a participant's achievement goals. Then, we manipulated their construal level (e.g., the deadlines for submission of an essay: experiment 1), and asked them to estimate the amount of study time required. The results of the two experiments supported our hypothesis. The role of construal level on predictions is discussed.

According to Construal Level Theory, psychological distance (e.g., spatial distance) is an important determinant of how information will be processed. When the target message seems more proximal (vs. distant) to the recipient, people attend to a concrete message (vs. abstract information). We investigated the possibility that people showed more agreement in response to a concrete message (vs. abstract information) when the target is proximal (vs. distant). In Study 1, spatial distance was measured by asking participants how far the target was (from Japan). In Study 2, spatial distance was manipulated using a world map. Results were consistent with our hypothesis. The implications of these findings for psychological distance and persuasion are discussed.

The need to belong is a fundamental social motive. Previous research have shown that victims forgive transgressors over time as a result of such motive (Wohl & McGrath, 2007). From this standpoint, we hypothesized that the victims, compared to the transgressors, recall their transgression with a significant other as being more distant in the past. In experiment 1, participants recalled a past transgression with a significant other either from a victim's or a transgressor's viewpoint, and reported the subjective temporal distance from the incident. As a result, the victims reported feeling more distant from the incident than the transgressors. In experiment 2, participants recalled a past transgression with either a significant or a non-significant other, either from a victim's or a transgressor's viewpoint, and reported the subjective temporal distance from the incident. Consistent with experiment 1, victims reported feeling more distant than transgressors when the transgression was between significant others, but the difference between victims and transgressors was not significant when it was between non-significant others. The results were consistent with our hypotheses. The influence of the need to belong on reconstructive autobiographical memory is discussed.<br>

This research investigated the effect of achievement motivation and subjective temporal distance on planning fallacy. Planning fallacy occurs, in part, due to optimistic prediction of how long it will take to complete a task. Previous research has suggested that task motivation could lead to an optimistic prediction, and that subjective temporal distance moderates this optimistic prediction. Forty-eight participants were asked to complete a scrambled sentence task (achievement priming vs. temptation priming), report subjective temporal distance before the final exam, and predict the amount of study time they would spend for the exam. They were followed up on the day of the exam to report their actual study time. Results showed that participants who were primed with achievement motivation showed more optimistic estimate of study time (i.e., planning fallacy) than participants who were primed with temptation motivation. Subjective temporal distance moderated this tendency, and the priming effect was significant only among those who perceived the exam to be distant. The role of motivation and subjective temporal distance on planning fallacy, and their implication for future research were discussed.<br>

In the present studies we explored various factors that affect effective self-regulation in social situations. We focused on the strategy for resolution of goal conflict, recovery from resource depletion, and preventing the rebound effect due to stereotype suppression. We found when an achievement goal conflicted with a temptation, counteractive self-regulation processes led a high rating for people who were useful for the goal. When self-regulation resource depleted, we also found, self-affirmation with high level of construal was effective for recovery from it. Further, we found a strategy for preventing the rebound from suppression of envious stereotypes.
