インドネシア、タイ、フィリピン、モンゴル各国に特徴的な食品の直接的あるいは腸内フローラを介する抗生活習慣病効果（特に抗２型糖尿病効果）について、オミックス解析にセルベースのエピゲノム解析を加えて網羅的に解析する。また、各国被験者の糞便や発酵食品から抗糖尿病効果を示す有益菌を分離し、ゲノム解析と抗糖尿病機能解析を行う。そして、各国の伝統的食文化の重要性を改めて認識し、食のグローバル化にアジア人の体をどのように適応させていくべきか、腸内フローラの観点から提言することを目的とする。

モンゴル国の草原部は、畜産品に依存する伝統的食習慣が現存する稀に見る地域であるが、市場経済体制移行後は人口の半分以上が西洋化した首都に暮らす。本研究では、食習慣の変化が健康指標の1つである腸内フローラに及ぼす影響を明らかにする。
課題1: 畜産品の摂取割合と腸内フローラを、都市住民（畜産品摂取量少・中グループ）と草原の遊牧民（多グループ）で比較する。
課題2: 伝統食で効能の知られるアイラグ（発酵馬乳）が多飲される名産地にて、摂取量による腸内フローラの違いを明らかにする。
課題3: 近年の製法の変化によるアイラグの微生物の菌叢の変化を、次世代シーケンサーによるメタ16S rRNA解析で解明する。 -

ユーラシア乾燥地に特有な4種類の自然災害は、砂塵嵐、干ばつ、砂漠化、ゾドとよばれる寒雪害である。これらの頭文字をとって4D災害とよぶ。干ばつは自然災害のなかでも最も人的な被害が大きい災害である。4D災害を干ばつとそれから派生するものの災害群ととらえ、ひとつのリスク評価の枠組みのなかでとらえるというのが本研究のねらいである。

モンゴル国において気象災害の緩和や、遊牧社会の振興に役立てることを目的にモンゴル気象水文環境研究所とともに遊牧知（遊牧に関する知識体系）の実態の把握や合理性などを牧畜気象学的に検証した。厳寒に暮らす遊牧民の冬営地の選択に関する遊牧知を牧畜気象観測より明らかにした。また、高い効能が知られる伝統食である馬乳酒の製造方法に関する遊牧知を2045名を対象とする全国アンケートにより収集した。これらの遊牧知の継続的調査および気象災害対策への応用にむけてモンゴル気象水文環境研究所に研究体制を整えた。また、本研究の成果を最終年度にウランバートルにて主催した遊牧知に関する国際シンポジウムで公表した。

遊牧の知識の客観的検証のために、モンゴル国北部のボルガン県の森林草原地帯で気象学的・生態学的・人類学的調査を実施した。一牧民の事例ではあるが、谷底にある夏営地と斜面上の冬営地の気温差から、盆地底の冷気湖の上にある斜面温暖帯に冬営地が設置されている可能性を指摘し、家畜にとって冬営地の気象条件が夏営地のそれより、冬季にいかに有利かを体感気温の観点から検証した。また、家畜の群れを移動群と定着群に分けて体重測定を実施した結果から、移動する場合のほうが体重増加に有利であることを示した。さらに、聞き取り調査により、調査地域が都市近郊に形成されている牧民集中地域であり、現在のモンゴル国における典型的な牧畜戦略のひとつとして、都市近郊に居住することで現金収入を最大化させようとする志向があることを明らかにした。
